Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Steven, here is your new thread in 2016. Happy reading in the new year.

Our Required Format:

JANUARY

Finish date: January 2016

Review: You can add text from a review you have written but no links to any review elsewhere even goodreads. And that is about it. Just make sure to number consecutively and just add the months.

JANUARY

1. Old Man's War (Old Man's War, #1) by John Scalzi by John Scalzi John Scalzi
Finish Date: Jan. 5, 2016
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: A
I'm not usually a "hard sci-fi" fan much anymore, but Scalzi's book is really good. I intend to read all of his works now when I can. He has a subtle touch of humor, and his characters are well done. He also gets into ethical and social questions in the book, which I like in my speculative fiction.

Done, Jill, sorry to have missed that initially.

Steven Harbin (stevenharbin) | 105 comments 2. The Ghost Brigades (Old Man's War, #2) by John Scalzi by John Scalzi John Scalzi
Finish Date: Jan. 18, 2016
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: A
If anything, I enjoyed this (indirect) sequel to Scalzi's Old Man's War (Old Man's War, #1) by John Scalzi even more than the first novel in the series. I thought the main character was more interesting and the interactions between other characters more fun to read. I'm definitely now a Scalzi fan.

Samanta (almacubana) Steven, you are missing the number of the book, review and you should put the citation to the other book at the end of your post so that it doesn't mess with the format. Like this:

3. Watch Your Back! (Dortmunder, #13) by Donald E. Westlake by Donald E. Westlake Donald E. Westlake

Finish Date: Feb. 20, 2016
Genre: Mystery/Crime Fiction
Rating: A
Review: I've read this, the 13th book in the John Dortmunder series, before. It holds up very well in a re-read, with the usual cast of characters who make up morose thief Dortmunder's partners in crime, along with a new youthful character who joins the gang. A fun read.

Finish Date: Feb. 21, 2016
Genre: Mystery/Crime Fiction/Humor
Rating: A
This is the 14th of the Dortmunder gang series, and while it's not the best of the series, it's still a fun excellent read. Dortmunder and the rest of his gang are blackmailed by a retired cop turned private investigator into searching for a long lost extremely valuable chess set, stolen from Russia immediately after WW I. As usual with a Westlake novel, things never quite work out as planned.
