I am not sure. He equates love with self-delusion and also talks about the concept of mindless treason. He also "felt so bankrupt; that whatever intellectual or philosophical precepts he clung to broke down entirely now that he was faced with the human situation."

I'm not sure if he is blurring the lines between the two or that treason is committed when the self-delusion is gone.
