Karla knew that Ann was a soft spot (a point of illusion - see later questions) for Smiley. He believed that this would prevent Smiley from being able to see through what Bill was really doing.

John Seymour I agree with Jen, but I think there were two other aspects, first it would prevent Smiley from seeing the mole because he would be distracted and angry and second, if he did accuse Bill of being a mole, Bill could claim that Smiley was just striking back at him because of the affair, which would cloud the water for everyone.

I agree with you both. That engraved lighter was a key tool to Karla, not only as a chain-smoker...
