Anita Pomerantz | 166 comments The ocean and Laye's reaction to it seemed to be an eye opening revelation to him. He recognized that there were vast and awesome things (opportunities) in the world that he had never seen, had never been exposed to. His feelings about the ocean paved his way to ultimately go to France.

Anna Fennell | 107 comments I definitely agree with you Anita. I think the whole crossing to get to the island conversation with Marie is also symbolic of his travels to France.

Sushicat | 292 comments As Anita said, the ocean represents all kinds of opportunities that were absent in the village. The possible experiences within cultures vastly different than his own in faraway countries his fellow villagers have never even dreamed of .
