4. Do the main characters change by the end of the book? Do they grow or mature? Do they learn something about themselves and how the world works?

As this is only the first volume we are not yet at the end and I believe the Golden Days is concentrating on childhood so for me the characters have not really changed or matured, that said Dao-yu has now experienced loss, he is developing as a poet and is starting to consider others so there are signs he is growing up.
I thought there was inconsistency in Bao-yo's character, though maybe this is just a reflection of the flightiness of young adolescence. Otherwise, I agree with Book Worm.
Not much growth as Book Worm has stated since this is the 1st Vol.
Jia Yu Cun is ambitious and he makes a good start by taking on responsibilities as a head gardener. Otherwise, except for one child who dies, there is not too much development.
