Yes, clarity is important and as an editor I spend most of my time taking ambiguity out of people's work, rather than changing apostrophes.

My current pet peeve is the use of the word '1800s' to describe the 19th century. A recent BBC article on the world's oldest living person said that she was "the last person left who was born in the 1800s". No she wasn't, or she'd be 207. Get it right!
