What would convince you to follow an author?

If someone were to ask you who your favorite author is, a couple of names would come into mind. But I'm curious to know who in the group are actual followers of their favorite authors or who have only recently begun following an author.

Off the top of my head, a follower would:
1. Subscribe to the author's newsletter
2. Follow them on social media
3. Attend their events (if nearby)
4. Buy their books

So what are you looking for in an author that would convince you to follow him or her? Looking forward to an interesting discussion on the topic. :)

I'd follow an author when I really really love their books - like the stories have struck a chord in me or something, especially a series because I grow to love the characters and place so much. I do all except #3 since I'm in the Philippines and my fave authors rarely go anywhere near my city, and the capital's an expensive flight away.
