Hannah (dontakemetochurch) Why is Tyrion so honest to Jon? Is it because he feels he relates to him? Is he this honest with everyone? To me it seems he's just met the guy yet he's telling him things he thought as a child, I thought it was a tad strange.

I would say yes I think he likely feels he can relate to Jon. Both are not really feeling wanted by their families. (Black sheep)

Ria (ban1chka) | 440 comments It's not just about their families, though, it's about their positions in society as a whole (Tyrion being a dwarf, Jon being a bastard) and about other people's expectations of them (or should I say the lack of such?). And, I guess I've always regarded Tyrion as someone who's not afraid to say what has to be said. And I think Jon really did need that "pep-talk".

(re: Society as a whole)

Very true Ria. I never really saw it that way. You are right, it's not just their families that treat them like S--t.

Have you guys read The Wit & Wisdom of Tyrion Lannister? It is a quick bathroom-type read you can pick up here and there from time to time. I love that character.

Yes, also they are both outcasts from royal families -

As much as he reads and knows, he was still unprepared for the North and the wall.
"I have a realistic grasp of my own strengths and weaknesses."
At times it is all too apparent how young Jon is.
Does Ghost ever make a sound?

message 8: by Ria (new)

Ria (ban1chka) | 440 comments Nope, he's mute.

message 9: by Ritika (new)

Ritika (rittika) | 12 comments Is Ghost actually mute? Did GRRM specify that somewhere? I must've missed it.

My favourite lines from this chapter - “When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king.” Could GRRM be hinting at something in the future?!

message 10: by Ria (new)

Ria (ban1chka) | 440 comments It's not specifically written, I think, but he never makes a sound. Whenever other wolves would howl, he is silent. It's much more likely that he's mute, rather than just weird.
