Imprisoned Boy and Flying Bugs

*Read this book sometime between 2003-2006
*Was most likely a YA.
*Fiction
*Took place either in the late 19th century or early 20th century.
*MC was between 9-15 years old and was the son of either a rich or royal family in a country that wasn't English speaking.

The only scene I can recall is the boy being imprisoned in a stall/barn/shed with hay on the ground and cockroaches/beetles flying around , freaking out a person (woman?) who is peering into the room. The boy may have that thought it was funny.
