Stefan Vanooteghem Hello everyone. I would like to take a moment to say that nothing I say is meant to offend anyone here, and everything I say is of genuine curiosity.

First off my name is Stefan, I was born a Male in a culturally and ethnically diverse Canadian suburb, in an area where, at least to my knowledge, everyone seems seems to be treated equally. The reason I mention this is because I have never really seen or experienced gender inequality, save perhaps gender specific jobs at bars, restaurants, Etc. But I don't think those are the types of things Feminist's are striving to change (I could be wrong, maybe thats where it would start). What I mean by not having seen or experienced gender inequality is I have never observed anyone think they're SUPERIOR because of there Gender.

As a Bi-product of the above statements, growing up I never really understood Feminists or what they stood for, it always came off as being greedy or trying to put women above men. I will admit there was even a time where I thought it was a big joke (I heard about a bunch of feminists puling a fire alarm at a Mens rights meeting at a local University). However I have recently revisited the thought and and decided it would not be fair to pass judgement without being properly educated about the subject.

That is why I am here, I saw that Ms. Watson was starting this book club somewhere on the internet and thought this would be a great opportunity to educate myself. If anyone has any thoughts or information to share I would much appreciate it.

Finally, a question I have had for a while (Sorry if it was asked already or if it is a common question you're tired of answering) why is it you refer to yourselves as Feminists and not Equal Rights Activists or something of the sort. Sorry for the novel, Thanks.

Sincerely, Stefan.

P.s Again, sorry about anything that may offend anyone, I really don't want to come off as an ass. Also sorry for bad grammar.

Mara | 11 comments Also if you'd like to introduce yourself you could do so on the Introduction thread.
We have to try and keep the number of threads as low as possible so please always search thoroughly for a thread suiting your question/issue (the complete list of threads) before you start new ones. This a lready is very chaotic here :)
