PS: Does it mildly perturb anyone that the author name can be read as Donno-who?
PPS: Smitha, might be the break from melancholy March for the lot. What say?

@Ahtims, I'm in the US for work currently and am trying to make the most out of the library system here, especially the audio segment of it :) In India, I use Scribd and the American e-Library for audiobooks, both have a reasonably good collection.Audible's collection is fantastic, but the subscription pricing doesn't suit me for the amount of credits they offer. And then of course there is librivox with its sea of classics and youtube with dramatized audios.
Srividya wrote: "Girish wrote: "Sri, every time I read your analysis on a book, I wonder if I'm such a shallow reader! nicely put :)"Haha, thank you, Girish. *blushes* However, you are in no way a shallow reader...."
@Sri, sure thing! I also have Ghostwritten and am waiting for a suitable time to start with it. May be in May. I believe you and Girish will join in for that :)

Dunno-who for sure :) Just trusting the booker-tag and plunging. Knew about the movie adaptation only after seeing your post.

oops! only saw this now. I will join by Wednesday. :)

@Manju, awesome!I just began and read through the first few pages. Nothing eventful so far but looks promising, trying to warm up to the narrative of a 5 year old.
Started the book today. Some of the references to tv characters like Dora are pretty confusing. but ingenious narrative style. reminded me of to kill a mocking bird..
Have already read. So will be just following the thread. This was a different type of read - scary, sad, pathetic..
Hi Vimal, Manju - how is it progressing for you guys?
I am finding it a like a less scary version of all the horror movie genres that involves a locked room. Easy to read, but it is not so easy to connect with Jack. Sometimes feel like shaking him up and saying 'Kid, don't ask such stupid questions!' :D

I remember thinking that Jack doesn't behave like a 5 year old.
This was a gruesome story. I was feeling grumpy and ill at ease for quite a few days after finishing it.

Reached the half way mark and am perplexed because what I thought was the main plot has already gotten resolved! No idea what's going to make up the second half.
I'm not finding it scary, but the first half gradually built up to be a nice thriller. Also I feel that the author has handled the 5-year old narrative quite adeptly so far. The ideas are fresh and I found some of Jack's thoughts and activities kindling pent up memories.Enjoying it so far.
@Ahtims, going by the comments so far, I fancy it'll be a marginally different experience for both. I fancy 3-4 star for Girish and 4-5 star for me :)@Manju, begun yet?
Let us wait and see :)
Dont think Manju is reading this one. But one can never tell...
What about Sri? She hasn't read it either.
And it is not in both their TBR lists.

I read it much before joining GR and I don't think I remember much except that I loved it when I read it! :)
@Vimal same puzzling effect at the halfway mark! I guess outside is a much more scarier place as experienced by all of us! we are all scave to be outside...
@smitha you gave a 5 star rating and felt ill at ease?! must be the appreciation for the writing then? anyway too early to call a rating for me :) but maybe not so diametrically opposite..
and I noticed Sri and you had already read and rated 5.. this was before posting about this book in this thread :p

Yes Girish, I had rated it when I joined GR as I was adding all the books read to my list. I don't remember much of the book but I read it after a series of really bad and disappointing reads and this stood out in terms of its writing and what I believed at that time to be the underlying philosophy. Not sure if I got that right but somehow I understood inside and outside as within and out of the individual. Where within there might be thoughts that you would not want to face and therefore you don't much go into introspection. On the contrary, looking out is easier even if it is scarier and bad because you don't have to really answer for yourself in an honest manner. I honestly don't know if that is right or wrong in terms of interpreting this book and I have totally forgotten it but somehow this stayed with me and I guess this was the sole reason I gave it a 5. ;) :P
I am still too in to wonder about the philosophy. It makes for an interesting read, so will reserve my comments till I am done.
Did i mention, It's one of the easier Booker reads in terms of text?
Given you don't remember much about the plot and you are a GR star now, you want to revisit the book and update your review? :) Maybe a newer persepective might come out and it might be a revised rating..

Hahaha! Will try and see if I can get the book immediately. I had borrowed it from the library when I had read it, so don't have a copy. If I can get it again in the immediate future, I might just join as I also want to know why I gave it a 5 star when I don't remember the book at all! :P
Girish, the 5 stars were for the innovation, Jack and his Ma, and their grit.
I didn't like it in a happy way, I appreciated it in a way horror books are appreciated.
I too read it after a series of bad books, hence the 5 stars, possibly I would take out a star, if I re read, buy it is definitely worth 4 stars, if not 5.

Almost 12% done and things are making some sense now. But are they prisoners without a neighbourhood?
Got hold of the book. Will start it tomorrow only as I need to finish up some cleaning, which I had left half done last time and which I have taken upon myself to complete before hubby comes home! :)*thinking of all the brownie points I will earn and all the exasperated looks I shall avoid for buying too many books in these three months. Perfect way to kill two birds with one stone* :P :P
Lol.. That was fast! I still can't get around to re-reading a book.. Maybe parts of a book, but never the entire book..
I wouldn't have read it but for the fact that I just can't remember the book at all. And checking my rating, I am quite surprised that I gave this book a full 5 star.. One of the main reasons why I am planning to re-read it! :P
anyone finished Room? Am reading about plan B and am liking the story now as there is hope and yet a fear what would happen if Plan B fails.
I completed it today morning. That part of the story was something which was one of the most thrilling segment of the book!
I completed it a couple of days ago. Can't say 'enjoyed' it, but found it engaging. A warm and mild read after the contrasting first half.
Sorry guys, I quit on this one. I found it too depressing and slow for my current mood. Don't think I am going to re-read this one in the near future. Will join you for the next one, if I do have it! :)
So which one is next here? :D
Ghojar ghajar - me, Girish and Sri were planningto.
but don't know whether we will be discussing here or creating a separate thread as it is not Booker material, and am not sure about Vimal's plans.

@Sri, haha.. thats par for the course. I'm pondering whether to give it a 4 or a 5, but I'm sure I would't want to re-read it.
Am ready for Ghachar Ghochar. Just give me time till next week though! :P :DVimal - I agree. My re-read has been a failure, which makes me think that one shouldn't reread such books! :D
Sri, Smitha - Ghachor Ghachar is a very small read. not too heavy and really a 2 hour read.. I'm 50% done Nd we can discuss it here
