@Ahtims, I'm in the US for work currently and am trying to make the most out of the library system here, especially the audio segment of it :) In India, I use Scribd and the American e-Library for audiobooks, both have a reasonably good collection.Audible's collection is fantastic, but the subscription pricing doesn't suit me for the amount of credits they offer.And then of course there is librivox with its sea of classics and youtube with dramatized audios.

Started the book today. Some of the references to tv characters like Dora are pretty confusing. but ingenious narrative style. reminded me of to kill a mocking bird..

Hi Vimal, Manju - how is it progressing for you guys?

I am finding it a like a less scary version of all the horror movie genres that involves a locked room. Easy to read, but it is not so easy to connect with Jack. Sometimes feel like shaking him up and saying 'Kid, don't ask such stupid questions!' :D

I remember thinking that Jack doesn't behave like a 5 year old.
This was a gruesome story. I was feeling grumpy and ill at ease for quite a few days after finishing it.

Reached the half way mark and am perplexed because what I thought was the main plot has already gotten resolved!No idea what's going to make up the second half.

I'm not finding it scary, but the first half gradually built up to be a nice thriller. Also I feel that the author has handled the 5-year old narrative quite adeptly so far. The ideas are fresh and I found some of Jack's thoughts and activities kindling pent up memories.Enjoying it so far.

Yes Girish, I had rated it when I joined GR as I was adding all the books read to my list. I don't remember much of the book but I read it after a series of really bad and disappointing reads and this stood out in terms of its writing and what I believed at that time to be the underlying philosophy. Not sure if I got that right but somehow I understood inside and outside as within and out of the individual. Where within there might be thoughts that you would not want to face and therefore you don't much go into introspection. On the contrary, looking out is easier even if it is scarier and bad because you don't have to really answer for yourself in an honest manner. I honestly don't know if that is right or wrong in terms of interpreting this book and I have totally forgotten it but somehow this stayed with me and I guess this was the sole reason I gave it a 5. ;) :P

I am still too in to wonder about the philosophy. It makes for an interesting read, so will reserve my comments till I am done.
Did i mention, It's one of the easier Booker reads in terms of text?

Given you don't remember much about the plot and you are a GR star now, you want to revisit the book and update your review? :) Maybe a newer persepective might come out and it might be a revised rating..

Hahaha! Will try and see if I can get the book immediately. I had borrowed it from the library when I had read it, so don't have a copy. If I can get it again in the immediate future, I might just join as I also want to know why I gave it a 5 star when I don't remember the book at all! :P

Girish, the 5 stars were for the innovation, Jack and his Ma, and their grit.
I didn't like it in a happy way, I appreciated it in a way horror books are appreciated.

I too read it after a series of bad books, hence the 5 stars, possibly I would take out a star, if I re read, buy it is definitely worth 4 stars, if not 5.

I completed it today morning. That part of the story was something which was one of the most thrilling segment of the book!
