I may go very very slow .
As I have quite a number of unfinished reads.

message 853: by Vimal (new)

Vimal Thiagarajan (veeti) | 646 comments I started and am at 10%. But having a crazy workweek, so don't think I'll be able to catch up with it until late next week. Will be very slow with this one.

Vimal, suits me fine 👐

Finished 7 smallish chapters. At page 22. Reading a paperback with tiny fonts, which is considerably slowing me down.
plus those conversations don't have quotation marks at all... making it difficult to grasp at places.

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
works fine for me too Vimal. Have a crazy work phase this week and next.

Around 7% into the book and I am liking it so far. Past present and interim snapshots early on generally makes for a good story..

message 857: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
Finished 14 short chapters. A real captivating story. One of my few reads on Vietnam and Siam.
How far have you both reached?
Nobody else joining in?

message 858: by Vimal (new)

Vimal Thiagarajan (veeti) | 646 comments True, Past present snapshots makes for a captivating read.. A good read so far, but unable to get to the book often. Think I can continue in earnest only late next week. At 12% still, the part where some kind of theme emerges, the nature of virtue kind of thing

message 859: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
Am at chapter 16 of part 2. Where have you both reached?

message 860: by Girish, The Good cop (new)

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
Heh.. 12 chapters done in Book 2. I am loving the writing. plus short chapters make it seem like an achievement no? :)

Yes, indeed. 😁

Initially the time frame mix up baffled me. Now I have got a hang of it

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
Reached 52%. The POW story slowed me a bit. Writing is impactful though I did not really see book 2 ending that way!

message 864: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
Am in the last book. Hiroshima and Nagasaki have happened. Now the aftermath for the Japs and Koreans.
Felt very bad for the way the POWs were treated.
This is the first time I am reading in detail about Japanese involvement in world war 2 and had never known about.the great Burmese railway project.

message 865: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
by POWs I mean the Australians, not the Japs (at least here in this book)

message 866: by Girish, The Good cop (new)

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
same here.. the first time I heard about the Siam-burmese railway.. Great setting for the novel. Do not yet know of those developments.

Reached 80% today. Might finish it today if this keeps up. Like the writing but the POW really tested my appetite. Liking the post war impact scene.

message 870: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47116 comments Mod
Good. Only 20% more. How many stars as of now?

message 871: by Girish, The Good cop (new)

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
couldn't read much yesterday :/ so far it is 3.5 stars to me

message 872: by Girish, The Good cop (new)

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
Completed. 4 Stars! The last 20% did enough to redeem the 0.5 stars.
Somehow got an impression it would have worked better as a love story alone without the other sufferings in detail.. Having said that, who is to deny the Booker it won!

I find the love in the book fickle. Liked the war story better 😁

Hehe.. It was what management guys called superfluous information for the main plot. :P

But ya, without the romance, nothing would have changed.

Perhaps showed up the strengths and flaws of Dorrigoo's character.

@Vimal - Completed?

message 877: by Vimal (new)

Vimal Thiagarajan (veeti) | 646 comments @Girish, Syl, Sorry guys, didn't get a chance to get to GR for a while. A few things started spiraling out of control all at the same time for me, and I couldn't help but shelving the book at about 25%. Glad that both of you liked it. I might get back to it later this year.

I'm thinking of starting either The Fishermen by Obioma or The Brothers Sisters by Patrick Dewitt this week. Let me know if you guys are interested in either of these 2.

Fisherman in my TBR... Sisters Brothers - didn't like the blurb much

No worries, VImal. And frankly no need for apologies. Read it at s time when you are not pressurised. This one can be savored only at leisure.

@Vimal Hope things are sorted out now! Narrow road is a fair whether book IMO.

Brothers Sisters in my TBR. Have a copy of Exit West which might be an absolute quick read. Let me know..
Fishermen will pass for now..

True that.. Tried to read again last week, but the pull wasn't there. So shelved for leisure

See that Exit west audio is on the wait list in my library. Looks like it might take 3-4 weeks to check out. Placed a hold anyway. Reading, as per my current trend I'm positively sure that I would leave any book dangling :P Have audios of both Fishermen and the Dewitt one.

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
You two can read Fishermen or we both can convince Col to read Brothers Sisters as a funny wild west take.

aside, got sucked into reading The Sellout and so far it's wickedly funny..so carry on if you decide on Fishermen

Oh G and V - count me in for Sisters Brothers .... I think that’s the name of Patrick deWitt book, right?

G - am also in for Exit West, whenever you want to read it.

I have the audio. when do you guys begin? Ping me?

Aaand sisters brothers remains abandoned maybe il be motivated enough to pick it again...

Vimal Thiagarajan (veeti) | 646 comments Awesome J!
Just started with Exit West.My first by Hamid. The prose is downright simple and slightly enchanting. Helped myself by not reading the blurb or other sources- the setting and the political backdrop are compounding the suspense, and so does what seems like magical realism interspersed

message 899: by Girish, The Good cop (new)

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
This is my 4th Hamid (and he as written as many in fiction). Very different from his other 3. The deceptively simple prose normally packs a punch.

We are beginning Jaya. And looks like we might have a full house for this one! :)
