Booker Hit List - Girish and Vimal (feat Syl and Srividya)

Finished 7 smallish chapters. At page 22. Reading a paperback with tiny fonts, which is considerably slowing me down.
plus those conversations don't have quotation marks at all... making it difficult to grasp at places.

works fine for me too Vimal. Have a crazy work phase this week and next.
Around 7% into the book and I am liking it so far. Past present and interim snapshots early on generally makes for a good story..

Finished 14 short chapters. A real captivating story. One of my few reads on Vietnam and Siam.
How far have you both reached?
Nobody else joining in?

Heh.. 12 chapters done in Book 2. I am loving the writing. plus short chapters make it seem like an achievement no? :)
Reached 52%. The POW story slowed me a bit. Writing is impactful though I did not really see book 2 ending that way!
Am in the last book. Hiroshima and Nagasaki have happened. Now the aftermath for the Japs and Koreans.
Felt very bad for the way the POWs were treated.
This is the first time I am reading in detail about Japanese involvement in world war 2 and had never known about.the great Burmese railway project.

same here.. the first time I heard about the Siam-burmese railway.. Great setting for the novel. Do not yet know of those developments.
Reached 80% today. Might finish it today if this keeps up. Like the writing but the POW really tested my appetite. Liking the post war impact scene.
Completed. 4 Stars! The last 20% did enough to redeem the 0.5 stars.
Somehow got an impression it would have worked better as a love story alone without the other sufferings in detail.. Having said that, who is to deny the Booker it won!

Hehe.. It was what management guys called superfluous information for the main plot. :P
But ya, without the romance, nothing would have changed.

I'm thinking of starting either The Fishermen by Obioma or The Brothers Sisters by Patrick Dewitt this week. Let me know if you guys are interested in either of these 2.
No worries, VImal. And frankly no need for apologies. Read it at s time when you are not pressurised. This one can be savored only at leisure.
@Vimal Hope things are sorted out now! Narrow road is a fair whether book IMO.
Brothers Sisters in my TBR. Have a copy of Exit West which might be an absolute quick read. Let me know..
Fishermen will pass for now..

True that.. Tried to read again last week, but the pull wasn't there. So shelved for leisure

See that Exit west audio is on the wait list in my library. Looks like it might take 3-4 weeks to check out. Placed a hold anyway. Reading, as per my current trend I'm positively sure that I would leave any book dangling :P Have audios of both Fishermen and the Dewitt one.
You two can read Fishermen or we both can convince Col to read Brothers Sisters as a funny wild west take.
aside, got sucked into reading The Sellout and so far it's wickedly funny..so carry on if you decide on Fishermen

Please.. you two carry on with brothers sisters.. . am currently reading 15 books together 😎and will try to make it 6 or 7 before joining a BR here 😁

Lols, as impeccable a BRer as ever prowled the planet :)

Cool. Will start this Friday Girish.. Hoping I don't get stuck this time.

Oh G and V - count me in for Sisters Brothers .... I think that’s the name of Patrick deWitt book, right?
G - am also in for Exit West, whenever you want to read it.
Given it is a short book, I think we can read Exit West before Vimal starts on Dewitt.
and Yes Sri, Patrick Dewitt one.. will start next Friday :)

Been missing talking with you guys as well, and all the reading. Been that kind of a year!
Awesome! Yes, Patrick Dewitt. Now that you're in as well, we'll make some noise and put the 16th into Syl's hands :P
You incorrigible ones. I may end up with Exit West as well as SB.. .But restraining myself...
and I liked the moniker of BR Prowler .Gives me a badass feel 😎👿

Lol Syl. See! we told you. it is just that we call it Booker and you call it just another book :p

I have the audio. when do you guys begin? Ping me?
Aaand sisters brothers remains abandoned maybe il be motivated enough to pick it again...

Just started with Exit West.My first by Hamid. The prose is downright simple and slightly enchanting. Helped myself by not reading the blurb or other sources- the setting and the political backdrop are compounding the suspense, and so does what seems like magical realism interspersed
This is my 4th Hamid (and he as written as many in fiction). Very different from his other 3. The deceptively simple prose normally packs a punch.
We are beginning Jaya. And looks like we might have a full house for this one! :)
