The Explorer question

I got this book at the Beauregard/Keyes house in New Orleans. I realize the book was written in the sixties, but I was absolutely appalled that Nicolas' rape of Margaret, not once but twice was considered okay. I don't know when I have been more angry when finishing a book to find that she willingly chose to remain with Nicolas out of duty and obligation to her marriage vows.
