message 201: by Hema (new)

Hema Roshini (hemaroshini) | 1 comments Hi Jessica! And all the others, of course!

My name is Hema Roshini. I'm a 20 year old university student. I'm from Singapore as well.

I got to know about this group and joined it because I'm a big fan of Emma Watson and all the stuff she is doing for women. Also, because I absolutely love reading.

I am a Feminist and I'm proud to say so. I believe there is still a long way to go before we can achieve gender equality. Small baby steps such as this book group is a good start and I want to support the campaign by contributing through this.

message 202: by Anna (new)

Anna Sergeyeva | 1 comments Hi my name is Anna and I'm 26. I live in Canada.

I joined this group because I love reading and want to look for suggestions about great books to read!

Looking forward to the discussions!

message 203: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, my name is Alice and I'm 21. I've just finished an English degree at the University of Oxford. I've always been passionate about reading and social justice, and I found the whole concept of this group really exciting so I decided to give it a go!

message 204: by Sara (new)

Sara Panico | 3 comments Hi everyone!!
My name is Sara Panico. I'm a 20 year old university student (I'm 19, but my birthday it's on the 14th). I'm from Italy but I've lived in England for four months. I've heard about this group from Emma's Facebook Page, so I joined. In Italy there aren't so many book clubs, and I've always wanted to join one. Now I'm doing this, and I'm sharing my experience with Emma (that's an extraordinary thing for a potterhead like me). Also, reading is the thing I do most during the day (like all of you, I suppose). I don't know if you can call me a Feminist: I'm still trying to understand this thing but I am a woman, of course. So, I want my rights. One day we will be as equal as men, but this is a pretty good beginning.
You know what they say: "A little step for women, a big step for humanity."

message 205: by Coqui (new)

Coqui (coquiesq) | 1 comments Hi everyone.. My name is Georgina (nickname Coqui) I'm from Yucatan, Mexico.

The reason I joined is because I love reading, and I realized that most of my favorite books are related breaking stereotypes about women, so having a club that is going to help me discover new authors and new books was an opporunity to good to pass.

Good luck to all of you in these 12 months we have ahead!

message 206: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Malcolm | 1 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Lauren Malcolm, I'm almost 15 and I live in Cape Town, South Africa!

I have always loved reading, and everything started out with Harry Potter for me. Emma has always been a role model for me, and hearing about this made me extremely happy! Nothing gets me more happy than feminism! I am all for feminism. Nothing gets me started like a sexist statement/comment/joke - you name it.

I joined this book club because I have always wanted to join one, and I'm always looking for new books to read - ESPECIALLY RECOMMENDED FROM MY IDOL!

I really enjoy the authors John Green, Richelle Mead and Michael Levithan (and obviously JK Rowling!!!!)

I really hope this club goes well, and achieves its goals! It was nice 'meeting' most of you!

message 207: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Barrett | 1 comments I'm Brittany - 23 - Texas

I joined this book club because I was actually looking for a book club and I seen Sophia Bush & Kate Voegele post about this particular book club and I though got why not join a book club with people around the world. :)

message 208: by Kassel (new)

Kassel Garibay (kasselgaribay) | 30 comments Hi Coqui! I am from Mexico too, my name is Kassel and I am 18 years old.

Through my life, Emma has always been there: portraying one of my favorite characters (Hermione is a true example of a feminist activist, just like Emma!), rocking other acting parts and most recently fighting for feminism with the UN, a job that one day I hope to do too.

The year is starting and I have promised myself to read more, and read more women. This book club came as an answer to that, I'm very excited about this! I'm looking forward to the discussions (:

If anyone would like to talk to me about books (or movies, music, life, the universe or anything else) send me a message or add me on goodreads! I love making new friends.

message 209: by Candela (new)

Candela | 2 comments Hello everyone! My name is Candela, I'm a 19 year old female from Argentina and I am an English student.
I joined this group for obvious reasons: I love reading (I started as a kid with Harry Potter, of course), I am a huge feminist and I wholeheartedly admire Emma Watson. What could be better than this group?!
I'm thrilled to be a part of this wonderful experience and I can't wait to read and learn with all of you.

message 210: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Terry | 1 comments Hi!

My name is Jordan. I'm 27 and currently living in Northern California (though probably moving back in with my parents in SoCal in a couple of months.. Ugh...) I spent the last 5 years as an internationally ranked rock climbing coach and recently left that role to pursue my original career goals: arts education out of museums! It seems all over the place right now but after a long time of very fulfilling work I'm looking forward to nurturing my art loving spirit.

I have always loved reading. I'm inspired by this group because reading is the first step to expanding our knowledge and knowledge/education is exactly what more women deserve and need in today's world. It's sad to me that there are so many women who don't have rights to education and simply the ability to read. I want to spend everyday not letting my rights to read and learn be in vain. I'm so excited to share in this quest for equality and understanding with women (and hopefully men too) all over the world!

Cheers!

message 211: by Aleesha (new)

Aleesha Khan | 1 comments Hey there!

My name is Ally, i'm 18 and from Singapore but i'm Iranian/Middle Eastern.

I'm currently in college on the path to being an Art Therapist.

I grew up reading the HP series, Roald Dhal, Enid Blyton, All the Brönte sisters books, Grimm Brother fairytales - etc.

The best books i can recommend to all of you are: Mother, Mother/ Wuthering Heights/ The Beauty Myth/ The Feminine Mystique/ The Colour Purple/ Looking For Alaska/ The Bell Jar(i didn't really like this as much but it's an important read)

I'm also a feminist. And a human rights activist (although aren't they quite the same).

I can't wait to get started and learn from all of you beautiful people.

message 213: by JasM (new)

JasM | 1 comments Hi! I'm Jasmyne, 25 year old musician living in Melbourne, Australia. I joined because, although I'm a staunch believer in intersectional feminism, I realised that most of my worldview has been developed by personal experience, what I find to be common sense, and conversations with other people. This book club will be great motivation to read more feminist literature. I look forward to broadening my intellectual horizons with you all!

message 214: by Anjuli (new)

message 215: by Laura (new)

Laura Baker | 1 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Laura and I live in England. I am 33 years old.

Feminism is something close to my heart but has also been a challenge for me in my career. I have just had a daughter and my aim is that she will never have to fight to do or become anything just because she is female. Equality will be throughout the world!

I have much respect for Emma and what she is trying to achieve and if we can help, then I will be a happier person!

message 216: by Marielena (new)

Marielena | 1 comments Hi I'm Marielena I live in Southern California and I'm in my third year of undergrad.
I joined this book club because the last month i got tired with the types of media I was consuming from people posting themselves getting wasted to clicking on Kylie Jenner's new hair. I want to focus on what really matters and this book club couldn't come at a better time.
I'm a huge supporter on equality and I feel like by readig these books I will have a better understanding of feminism and our role within it.

message 217: by Hailee (new)

Hailee (littlekinggone) | 1 comments Hello everyone! I'm Hailee. I'm 24 from Spokane, Washington. I'm joining this book club because I consider myself a feminist, and want to be more aware of what feminist literature is out there. I read a lot of articles discussing current feminist issues that are ongoing or tackle problems as they arise. Equality for women, of every race, sexuality, and culture, is a cause near and dear to my heart, and I hope this book club brings in all types of voices so we can expand feminism to include those voices that tend to get overlooked.

This was a wonderful idea, and I hope it does as well as expected. Emma Watson is an amazing women, and I love the work she has done so far.

message 218: by Hannah (new)

I'm Yashna from India. I am an ardent feminist and I'm here to learn more and more about the ideas that can make a difference in our skewed society. And there's no better way to do that than by reading and sharing of stories.

Looking forward to some great insights from all of you :)

Happy Reading!

message 228: by Magda (new)

Magda | 52 comments Hello everyone

My name is Magda, I'm 29 years old and I'm a pediatric dentist in México. I didn't know I was a feminist until I saw Emma's speech and become passionate about it.

It may sound repetitive but as a 2016 resolution I decided to read a book per month (at least), I started with "We All should be feminists" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie then I saw Emma's tweet about the book club and it was like a sign I was on the right path.

I have never been in a book club, but I like to read a lot, and this is an opportunity for me to learn and get involved in books related to feminism. Im excited to be part of it :)

I wanna help people in my country to understand the real definition of feminism, I want girls in Mexico to understand that they matter and they are able to be whatever they want to be.

Gracias Emma! This Book Club is an excellent idea!

message 231: by Anna (new)

Anna | 1 comments Hey all!

My name is Anna. I'm 19 years old and from Australia. As a young(er) adult, reading used to be one of my favourite past times, and since starting university a little over two years ago, I feel as though I have let this past time of mine dwindle. Therefore, I joined this group because I trust that the compelling topic of feminism will provoke interesting and enriching conversation between inspirational human beings, and this way, I will rediscover my love for reading.

I look forward to this year! Thanks, everyone :)

message 232: by Richard (last edited Jan 07, 2016 11:54PM) (new)

Richard | 2 comments Hi everyone. I'm Richard and I live in Federal Way Washington (USA) and I am 16. I have enjoyed a large amount of Emma Watson's movies including Harry Potter and The Perks Of Being A Wallflower. I joined this group because I have a large belief in gender equality and i'm a huge nerd/ book worm. Lots of people say "Join the club" Well now I have! I hope to read a lot of new books and make new friends.

P.S. that quote wasn't specifically about this group it was just a joke.

message 233: by Carissa (new)

Carissa Hello.
My name is Carissa and I live in the South West corner of Canada. Feminism and gender issues are very close to my heart. I know I live in a part of the world that doesn't always see just how awful living as a woman can be, but I still feel the affects in my own way. To echo many of the introductions here, I've grown tired of people brushing aside gender and feminist issues. I joined this group to try and educate myself further in these areas.
Also, I heart Emma Watson so hard. <3

message 234: by Gustavo (new)

Gustavo | 2 comments Man and women will never be the same but we can be equally treated. I mean, men can't do or feel much that women can... and backwards. Instead, we can comprehend each other and understand that when a man and a woman are united with mutual respect; then equality exist, then fenimism exists.

message 235: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 15 comments Hi all,

message 239: by Lianne (new)

Lianne Hi everyone

Happy new year! I am 38 and from New Zealand. I am very interested in learning more about feminism as it is very evident that we are still a long way from equality. Thanks Emma for starting this group - it is a great idea!

message 240: by Marnie (new)

Marnie Hemming (marniehemming) Hi, my name is Marnie Hemming. I'm from the Isle of Wight, England and I'm 18.

From a very young age I've loved to read, and I first fell in love with Emma as Hermione in Harry Potter. I've read the books a trillion times and still re-read them. As I grew up I started to follow Emma as herself rather than Hermione, and realised how incredible she is and the amazing work she does for UN. She is the person who first intruded me to modern feminism (I leant about specific types of feminism in A-Level Sociology). She has made me passionate for change and I hope to rekindle my love of reading and learning through my knowledge of feminism and equality, and hope to better myself and do all I can to forward the movement in my own little way.

Thank you so much Emma for making this group, and to all other members, I hope to be discussing with you soon :)

message 241: by Mairi (new)

Mairi | 1 comments Hey, everyone!
I'm Mairi, I'm 16 years old and l live in Glasgow, Scotland

message 242: by Tim (new)

Tim Brooks | 1 comments Hey! My name is Tim Brooks, I'm currently living in Barboursville,West Virginia. I'm 31, a single father with custody of my six year old son. I was in the Marine Corps for ten years, now I'm working towards my goal of becoming a surgeon.

I've joined the club to widened my knowledge on gender equality issues throughout the world. During my custody ligation, I experienced gender inequality. Once UN Women released HeforShe I've been proactive in my local community with advocating for gender equality and educating different age groups. I'm looking to expand my network soon and believe that this reading group would provide valuable information to help others.

message 243: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 1 comments Hi, I'm Lucy, I'm 15 (almost 16) and I'm from the UK. I really wanted to join this group because I loved the work Emma did for the UN and I wanted to learn more about this topic, and understand it in better detail.

I love Emma, from the first time I saw her on opening day of HP1. I especially love how she's grown to use her voice to help women everywhere.
I took my first class on feminism last semester, but it is something that I've always been passionate about. I hope to learn so much more from this group and it's discussions. Looking forward to speaking with you all!

Camille Motto (camillemotto) Hi ! My name is Camille, I'm 23 and from Paris, France. I work in a library and enjoy to read, but also share my passion and discuss. To me, this is the perfect group : it's worldwide, we're all from so many different places, but we can still relate to each other for : we have in common the passion for books, the wish to discuss it, and last but not least : a certain feminist topic we're all concerned about.
Thanks, Love
