Josefine Nytofte (finen) | 1 comments Hi! My name is Josefine, 28 and Danish expat living in Germany. I'm fairly new to the label of feminism, but have been raised to cherish the values these encompass, and therefore I'm always looking to learn more about the topic. I find Emma's work as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador so inspiring, and I'm sure to find many more inspiring people in this group. I love to read, and would love even more to share readings, thoughts and discussions with likeminded - and that's how I found this group.
Aside from trying to spread a healthier perception of the genders in our societies today, I'm an environmentalist at heart and my background is also in climate science and sustainability.
Happy to meet you all!

Hello Josefine!

Welcome, I hope you'll enjoy this group and it will help you to find what you are looking for.

Sustainability and everything related to the environment 👈😊👍
With kindness.

I comment (Icomment) | 34 comments Psalm 16: 1-3
1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;

3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

I want to share this biblical quote in my introduction because I have a deep spirituality. This spirituality is part of my personality.

Alex Hi all, I'm Alex, 27, living in the UK.

On my mom's side, we're actually from a matriarchal society in north-east India where women inherit property and children trace their lineage through their mothers (taking their last names etc). It's a famously women-centric place, so I'm surprised I haven't really read much feminist work. But I'm eager to find more book suggestions, and have always been inspired by Emma's work.

Looking forward to getting involved in this group!

Lore LongSoulSystem (longsoulsystem) | 3 comments Hi!
I'm Lore (or Rayel), 30 years old and I'm from Mexico.

I'm passionate, idealist, curious and I've considered myself a feminist since I can remember, only I know why for a few years.

My first feminist book was about Ecofeminism. It was enlightening!

I'm currently focusing my energies on reading about mental health disorders, particularly dissociative identity disorder... which by the way, is more often diagnosed to women. Why? Because it's caused by severe childhood trauma... and girls are more vulnerable.

I'm looking forward to learn a lot from you all!

Claire | 8 comments Hi everyone! I'm Claire, 23 and from the UK. I've been on here a while but mostly just lurking on the comments. I would love to get more involved but not really sure where to start! I've read most of the recommended reads but I find if I want to comment someone else has already said what I want to say so there isn't much point?

I just want to learn things and help make the world a little bit better. I'm so interested in being eco-friendly, sustainable and yes, a feminist. I find sometimes I can get a little overwhelmed at all of the possibilities and where to start.

I don't know if I can call myself a feminist. I believe in everything it stands for, and I will tell people that, however I feel like the title feminist needs to be 'earned' and that I aren't doing anything 'worthy' other than saying that it is what I believe in. Does anyone else kind of feel like this?

I look forward to participating in more discussions, reading the new recommended reads, and of course hearing back from the lovely member of OSS!

Claire :)

message 1713: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 27, 2019 03:22AM) (new)

Hello Claire !

May I tell that sometime we feel someone has already said what we were thinking but we all have our own perception, our own ways to voice and to write and maybe it is good to share that as well.
Let alone the book club, sometimes someone has already stated what I feel but I have the feeling it is somehow important to make the message bigger (with cautious to not speak over) by supporting what has been voiced. Just a thought of course :)

I'm looking forward to reading from you! 😊

message 1714: by Giorgio (new)

Giorgio Germano | 6 comments Hi everyone!
I‘m Giorgio, a 15-years-old boy from Italy.

The first thing that I‘d like to say about me is that I LOVE reading, it‘s really an fundamental part of me. I‘ve read tons of books in italian, and now I‘ve begun reading in English (it‘s not so easy... but surely challenging).
I love sports, animals, spending time outdoor, and... I don’t use so much social medias, as strange it is for a digital native. I prefer human contact!
It was Emma Watson that made me discover feminist activism, when I was like 12 or 13, and, since then, it‘s always been an issue very close to me, if not the most important.

If you ask about other opinions... well, I firmly believe in the importance of culture and education, which should be granted to every single human being on this planet, and it‘s the basis for a fair society.
From a political point of view, I think that US deputee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reflect exactly all my ideas (Green new deal, importance of welfare policies, support to LGBT+ community... do I have to list them all?). Yep, I love that girl.

So... I’m really happy to be part of OSS, and I’m looking forward to take park in our forums!! ☺️

Giorgio

PS: Please, don‘t exitate and point out ANY mistake (which I will surely do 😅), I take this also as an opportunity to improve my english!

PSS: And, boys, remember: when you’ll be told the usual "why are you feminist? aren’t you a boy?", smile back and reply: "well, I didn’t know that people of WWF are pandas..."

message 1715: by Claire (new)

Claire | 8 comments Thanks Florian and Meelie! I will definitely try to get involved more, even if it's just to support a point already made.

I guess even just from being part of OSS and reading other comments, watching videos, reading blogs etc it has changed my way of thinking and I am trying to think more about what I say or what other people say. I think actively trying to be a good person and standing up for what you believe in is better than sitting back and saying nothing at all.

So nice to hear positive comments from you both, so thank you. :)

Also a big welcome to Giorgio! :)

Not a problem Claire 😉

@Giorgio: PS: Please, don‘t exitate and point out ANY mistake (which I will surely do 😅), I take this also as an opportunity to improve my english! you are 15 years old, you said you read tons of books, you wrote an entire post in English and you told you were reading in English... I surely guess a few mistakes won't be an issue at all! 😉

Sinan Colak | 3 comments Hi everyone! I’m Sinan,21 years old and from Turkey.

Actually, I’ve found this community thanks to my mom’s advice who is an English teacher in Turkey. She is the one who made me a reader but she didn’t make me a feminist because in her opinion, it should’ve been my own decision to be a feminist.

To be honest, it’s a very hard thing to be a feminist in a country like mine because there are lots of inhuman activities in here but people like my parents making their stands. They believe in equality and they always try to develop their knowledge by reading books like you all do.Also, reading books in English is a common thing in our house thanks to my mom who has a master degree in English literature.

I’m just trying to get used to be here and keep up with new activities.I hope I can get involved as soon as I can.

Thanks...

Charlotte (lottikala) | 11 comments Hello everyone, I'm Charlotte, 20 years old and from Germany :) about 2 years ago I moved to Finland aaaand that's also where I study at the moment.

I joined OSS already months ago but seldom found the time and leisure to participate in the discussions except for a couple of shorter comments. Since my semester ends within the next three days, I hope to be finally able to connect to the community.

I consider myself a feminist since I was about 13, 14 years old, but I confess that there are many aspects of feminism I still have to get into and that is one of the reasons I joined this awesome book club. Another one is that I want to explore the whole range of feminism in order to convince some of my relatives (and others, of course) that feminism is something worth fighting for. At the moment, it happens that my father and my uncles (generation 50+/60+) would say "You became a little feminist" to me and it is impossible to overhear their dislike.
So basically, through this club I hope to get new insights, gain strength and be able to show people like my father that the feminist community is one fighting for a better, more equal and peaceful world.

Oh and of course I also love good literature that's more than just entertainment, so I'm also here because of the books.

I've been following Emma's work for about two years and this group for the past year. I recently nudged myself to join because I've found that the community furthers my own learning and writing. I also appreciate the international and inter-generational nature of the group. Finally, I'm grateful for how well-run the group is, which I attribute to Emma's example and the team of thoughtful moderators.

I am Neha Deshpande . I am 21. I'm from India. I am an UPSC aspirant. It is the entrance exam for civil services in India. I aspire to join the Indian Administrative Service and work at grass-root level for development of citizens, especially women and children.
I am a feminist and the main reason for me to join the group is to learn from feminists all over the world through books and their experiences. I am in awe of Emma Watson and support the causes she fights for.
Also, I am a Political Science graduate and will start my masters next month.

message 1734: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (jo34) | 13 comments Hi,
I'm Sofia, a 14-years-old from Italy.
I'm here because: 1) I love books very much (without them I couldn't live); I think read a book is a way to escape from reality for two, three hours... And 2) because I think I'm a feminist, even if everyone should be feminist. I'm a feminist because I believe that household cleaning don't concern just women, but also men; I believe that men shouldn't have fear to be weak, they can cry, too. Why should men show themselves strong if they are not? Finally I believe in gender equality, in a change if people (like the OSS readers) are determined to change their life style and to put into practise gender equality's teachings, for example in everyday's things (An idea: Why must men drive a car?)
I hope to don't tire you and an other thing: I don't speak (and write!) English very well, so excuse me for mistakes and imperfections.
Finally, (doesn't really) I loved La La Land film.
I'm really happy to be here, to be part of Our Shared Shelf!
P.S.: I joined the group nearly due weeks ago, but I discover just today the discussion Introduction! So...Here I am!

Sophie H | 9 comments Hi, I’m Sophie, a fourteen year old female from the United States. I joined this club a few weeks ago, but am starting with the July and August readings.

I originally found this book club because I was a fan of Emma Watson’s work (with the UN, Times Up, G7, and just in general) and was a feminist myself. I noticed the account for Our Shared Shelf through Instagram and decided to join. I joined this book club because equality and feminism are both things that I’m very passionate about, and things that I hold close to my heart.

Joining this book club I hope to achieve broadening my views. I want to learn more about feminism and how it affects different people. I believe that we can’t really make a change in the world if we only think from our point of view, and books are a great way to see from other people’s point of views. I hope to really see inequality from different points of view, in order to better understand it myself.

A little about me is I love to read. Like most people on this discussion group, I think reading is an amazing way to learn and understand the world better.

Thanks for including me in this book club, it’s much appreciated!

Anu Priya Bharathi Rajan (aphoenixcry) | 4 comments Hello! I am Anu, I am 27 years old and I am from Coimbatore, India.
Gender Equality is something that is still lacking in many parts of India. Even though I have not suffered as much as other people from rural parts of India, I am also living in a society that has patriarchal veins running through them from a very long time.
I would like to bring change to this community. I believe reading and learning more about the issues related to it is the first step in achieving it. I am a huge Emma Watson fan. She had grown into this beautiful person from Hermione Granger in Harry Potter to UN spokesperson for the cause of Equality. So, I would like to continue my journey along with her and a thousand others from this group.

I'm Molly from Cincinnati (OH), I'm a hardworking girl and also a lesbian!

I'm in love with fantasy books, books about religion and also about my sexual orientation.

Thank you 😊 I didn't expect as many people to welcome me actually 😅 considering the number of members the book club is supposed to have and the small digest I received... Why is that? May be the books are not really attractives? May be Emma Watson 's presence on the book club is not enough, she must be very busy 🤷‍♀️ At least there are active members, hun!

Well thank you, I'm trying to catch'up with the group, I just received my copies of Solito, Solita and Butterfly, as Meelie said, there is a lot of threads to read before 💆‍♀️

message 1743: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 07, 2019 04:09PM) (new)

You'll realize the book club is not as visibly active as you might have thought.
Why? Well, people come here to get the suggestion and then wait for the next one. No real discussions for now in the forum, I used to create threads related to the books and theme but I'm tired to see almost nobody is involved so yes... I gave up somehow.
Wether Emma Watson is busy or not this community should live without her (Edit: I mean we should not wait for her to be active not her to be not here, she is like every single member of OSS essential) it's good to see one of her announcement but OSS should be centered on books and intersectional feminism not Emma and I suppose many people tend to forget that. As long as they get sensitive to feminism, I'm fine but it's frustrating because I joined for discussions and people.

Anyway, take what you want to take but don't expect anything else than book suggestions and give aways and sometime one or two threads that might interest you. Those are my advice otherwise you'll be disappointed like me. Once again I am direct but I prefer to tell the truth even if it (sometimes) takes a lot to do so, even if I don't like to be the one who says it sometimes since it feels I'm the bad news crow. But things might change, I hope they will! :)

Why is that you're not a Moderator, hun? You seem to be really active, I mean, starting discussions about the books etc 🤷‍♀️ I didn't really understood what you wanted to say by that Edit you made 🙄 "I mean we should not wait for her to be active not her to be not here, she is like every single member of OSS essential) it's good to see one of her announcement but OSS should be centered on books and intersectional feminism not Emma and I suppose many people tend to forget that."

I mean yes for the first part, I agree a 100% with you that book club must live thanks to the mods, etc around books, I think I saw a thread around articles in press media... May be, I don't know elements like the stikers evoked, sustainable etc ? I believe most of us are comming because we admire Emma Watson, she is iconic in the US for the GBLTQ family! 🤫🙈 (She is hot af 🙄)

To reply your question about moderator, I have no wish to be a moderator and I would not be wanted as moderator :p so everyone is happy that way! ;)

For the Edit my guess is: Barrier Language :p Thanks for asking clarification, I'll do my best to be clear.

=> What I was trying to mean is that often when Emma does an announcement there are a peak of activity I wanted to state that we should find motivation in ourselves and other members not in her. Of course, she inspires many people which is good, being a fan is also fine but everyone should make a few efforts to make this community blooming.

This was for the Edit. I hope I am more understandable :) if not please let me know ;)

As for sustainability my work is tightly related to it, I'm not saying I am fully legitimate but I know a lot about polymers (that are used to make stickers) and a bit about pollution since I'm working in green chemistry and synthesis of bio-renewable, sustainable and biodegradable polymers. To be clear, there is no sustainable synthetic material (even the transformed one), some of them are "less bad" but they need improvement. The bio-renewable part is in progress since we are (humans) able to use biomass as starting material but keep in mind that bio-renewable does not mean not polluting, it only means that you use renewable biomass but the process to make your material might be crappy as hell and the degradation horrible. Finally, for biodegradable, everything that's told by companies about synthetic polymers are mainly greenwashing (on purpose or not), the best I have seen was "material biodegradable*" with a little legend *made from biodegradable resources... but whenever you change just a little bit the chemistry, the properties are totally changed. Anyway I could talk during days about that topic because I know it well.

As there is really a lot of reading, OSS is more than 3.y.o now, is there a book, you really wouldn't recommend me...? 💁‍♀️

Sure, I would recomment you "All about love" by Bell Hooks and then "The Colour Purple" by Alice Walker. I feel those books may be quite complementary. Then if you want to read more about theory choose "Sister outsider" by Aude Lorde.

I really loved Half the Sky but it is quite tough to read. If you want something less challenging but still challenging (and I guess it is a question of perception) Fledgling by Octavia Butler or Listening for Lionsby Gloria Whelman are great.

Try to have peaceful reading in the same time so that you can switch to relax a bit. To me reading OSS books is not relaxing at all because I use them to question myself, to reassess my perception of the society and to change. It's a real work of self-development (a complementary one) in attempt to be a better human. That's how I use OSS and I am aware there are many ways to use OSS. Choose the one that suits the best your expectations and walk on another path whenever you want! :)

Oooh... well, your welcome! :) Glad it's helping more than one person and I must admit it makes me happy :)

Maybe this could be a thread to create: Proposing different ways to approach OSS books with Theme and Guide lines. If the older members wants to do so it would be great and largely appreciated by new members I suppose. In addition, it could create a new impulse. I'll try to message a few members who could potentially help out in those common efforts.

I am aware sometimes I am grumpy and outspoken but I'll always try to help. Please do not hesitate to ask advice to other members, they are resourceful.

I will give you my answer as a lesbian, and that answer may doesn't fit your expectations... first I feel you're not coherent at all with your words...

I was lurking like always and I found a thread about HK and women rights and believe me for someone who doesn't want to be a moderator, you gad a hell of a talent to cut every conversation that doesn't fit your thoughts or will... calling on Emma's vulnerability or taking her defense as an excuse to bring attention to you, mister somehow "perfect" for Her but not for the other and I know she is hot AF so I understand you 😉 For me your reaction wasn't appropriate for someone who pretend not to be a moderator... You act like you really want to be one and you say the opposite... may be you should think about that for your next try to get attention from a woman coz' I believe she must be bored AF, if she read us... (That's only my lesbian opinion... 😉)

Human Rights and Women rights are always evoked in every book chosen if I don't mistake like Radium girls for example... You may disagree and it's cool because you will improve on that process you describe me, to think and rethink about your vison, you actually never share... 🤷‍♀️ with members of the OSS, I mean you should push further than just saying key words... Or trying to raise a wave of good willing people you can actually direct toward any people trying to participate... with all of the challenging reading you've performed... (May be you're not conscious you're acting like that)

What I get from you "scholar typed edit" is : You're destroying any blooming of Emma by seeking for attention from her actually... And any inertia she would create with her posts on the book club on her fans that are members of the Book Club she created for her fans and every other that would join the conversation and find answers in the selected books...

For the explanation about your skills, I feel like I really can understand, because it's really complicated etc... It's called brouillon, you should then take time for you, living your screen and the book club for a while and then come back when your mind will be more "clear"... You know Meelie told me to read the thread and I'm stupid AF 🙋‍♀️ I've read almost all the thread before to get started... 💁‍♀️ and I saw a lot of things like you wanted to quit etc, that allows me to say or believe what I believe about you as a lesbian activist that march for women's Rights...

But my point is I also feel, you don't know yourself, you feel complexed to be who you are, scientist, etc and for most of the women, that may lead to feel empathy for you... But I'm a lesbian, and my point is you won't have me with your tricks 🙄 For that reason, you sometimes have a bit on influence on the movement and even on Emma, who once have been told the :"Chief Commander" by a cutie woman 😉

Anyway I feel reduced to a shall I say "Stupid" woman, that's my feeling, and I know you will apologize but it's OK, you're not the first and not the last 😘 You talked about Language Barrier you're setting alone, because I saw a thread you've been writing about being a foreigner saying you've been three year in the country and you still don't talk any current English or American English language ...?🤷‍♀️ and when I read "Challenging Books" I feel they are hard to read in English, but Yaw Men, I'm an American woman🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️ That's were I want you to understand I'm not stupid like I can read in my own language, hun 🤷‍♀️😪 and I'm sorry I don't, but really don't understand what is a peaceful reading, hun ? 😅🤔

Anyway thank you for the recommendation, I still have to finish solito, solita because that's a hell of a subject here in the US, Trump is such a Looser and a racist! And then butterfly, I already love!
I had kind of a crush on : All about Love so I will continue with that and then may be Half The Sky! So thanks again! 😘😘😘

Florian and Molly, please may I suggest that you solve your disagreements over private message?
This is simply a thread for people to introduce themselves.

Welcome Evgeny :)
