message 1402: by Angharad (new)

Angharad | 1 comments Hi everyone!
My name is Angharad, I was born in Wales and grew up mostly in Western Australia. I am 31 years old, a book lover and feminist of course :)
I have been following the bookclub and reading discussions since the beginning but due to crazy work commitments never had a chance to pick up the books or get involved in discussions. I have now left that job and am super exited to get reading and talking! I read (and loved) How to be a Woman a few years ago and just finished Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl a few days ago. I am inspired by the wonderful mix of people from all round the world here peacefully discussing big issues, you're all amazing!!
Just about to get stuck into The Argonauts....

message 1403: by Béa (new)

Béa | 3 comments Hi there,
My name is Béa and I live in France.
I finally find time to properly introduce myself (Like Angharad, I've been reading a lot of (reallyyyy interesting) things on the group, but not really participating, I hope it's gonna change...)

Growing up (I'm 26), I never really considered myself a feminist (because, really, I didn't know what it was, except for the "archaic" representation, which is a bit aggressive)
But thanks to strong women "around" me (family but also author, actress...) I was already embracing feminism without knowing. And thanks to Emma Watson and her UN HeforShe Speech, I learnt that I was a feminist (Yaay)

Reading discussions here, I was really excited to see that there are lot of different people, and I can't wait to participate more. I join the group to read but also to learn from all of you !
(Hopefully, I will get a copy of Hunger makes me a modern girl soon )

See you around.

message 1404: by Dilyana (new)

Dilyana My name is Dilyana, Lana for short, and I'm from Bulgaria. It's sad to say, but in my country feminism is a taboo subject - girl empowerment is just not commonly talked about.
None of my real life friends consider themselves feminists, so when i start talking about the subject, they simply dismiss me and continue talking about boys and make-up and other everyday things.
Don't get me wrong, I love gossip just as much as the next girl, but i believe there are so many other important things we could talk about.
I've been searching and searching for a support group all over facebook and other chatrooms (I even tryed omegle, that's how desperate i am, don't wanna talk about it).
I want to have normal conversations with people who share my ideas. They don't have to be about super heavy political things, maybe i just want to shair a good fanfic i found, that the heroin is not useless, mindless underdeveloped creature with no real friends, only a insta-love boyfriend.

Sending lots of love for everyone in this group and begging someone to reach out to chat with me and tell me if chocolate really makes us smarter. #imnotdesperate

Hi Dilyana! Welcome. I think too its important to talk about feminism. You know Malala? She is a great exemple. Malala fight for the education of girls that can`t go to the school.
In this group you shoul read " The color purple" and " The Complete Persepolis".
I will love to chat with you about feminism and books.

Welcome, all!

I hope you find what you are looking for here, Dilyana. I understand the frustration of having interests different from the people around you. The internet is a great way to engage with new and shared ideas. Check out the feminism folder on the discussion board, there are a lot of great conversations there. And like Sara recommended, I hope you get the chance to dive into some of the books we're reading here :)

message 1407: by Dilyana (new)

Dilyana You guys are awesome :D

Sara, yes, i know Malala, I've watched many interviews with her and she just gives me the feeling that I should be doing soo much more with my life and my education. Because of her I feel very thankful for everything I've been given. And thank you about the thread recommendatons, definitely will check them out.

Katelyn, I'm so happy I found this group. I feel like i could talk about important things here. And I already started the book for this mounth. It's taking me time to get into it, since it's not what i would usually pick to read, but I'm loving that I'm giving it a try :))

Grace Sutherlin Hi All! My name is Amy and I'm from the state of North Carolina in the U.S. I write under the pen name of Grace Sutherlin and my main reading and writing genres include memoir and women's issues. I am currently in the process of transitioning from being an English instructor to a full-time author. Actually Sara, I recently recommended Malala's memoir to a friend's daughter who is beginning her sophomore year in high school. I am all for female empowerment and most of my friends would agree that I take utter delight in referring to myself as a major feminist of the Generation X era. I am looking forward to reading this month's book selection and would like to extend my appreciation to Emma Watson for taking the initiative to start this group and allow us all to be a part of a shared community.

Best,
Amy
Pen Name: Grace Sutherlin

" Anne´s Frank diary" is one of the bests books in the world. I´m glad to see young people inspired by her story. Show me that the world is not a mess. There is hope.

Brebis Emplumée | 5 comments Hello,
I'm Brebis (Ok it's a fake name. I don't like to prowl on internet with my real name). I'm french and 38 years old.
I followed the group and I wanted to join it when I found that I could relate to your idea of feminism.

In France, it's nearly a slur to be named a feminist. Furthermore, feminist women fight more between them than for the cause. It's my feeling.
But, as Caitlin Moran said, I stand on the shoulders of my aunts. It would be a great disrespect to forget the goal of their fight.
I don't want to regress on my rights.

Thanks to Emma and this group to be here for people like me, and for the help you provide to express ourselves.

Sorry for the mistakes that I might have done in my spelling. :P

I have lived expériences when a person treated me of feminist and you could read in bold letters under that term "sour puss", "hysterical", "doesn't get what she needs from her husband", "want to castrate men"... All that for what? It was just a problem of opinion between a man and a woman, where the woman defends her point of view.
I think the funnier was when a coworker told me feminists where schizofrenics. They wanted to lead the world and be treated like men but they wanted those same men to open the doors for them. At this point, I laughed at him.
Reassuringly, this man is a rare, even if extreme, case of machism.

I'm Halsey and i'm an 18-year-old Chinese girl.I'm a student in Kean University. And i really like reading.Virginia Woolf is one of my favourite writers. But Some girls don't have opportunities to study, and some are judged that they cannot be as capable as boys in some areas. From my perspective, every one should be treated equally and fair, regardless of gender. I want to spare my own efforts and share the idea with you and people around me.Thank you!

cherrie (wchereads) Hello everyone! I'm Cherrie, 20 years old and I'm from China. I'm currently going to University of Waterloo in Canada. I've been in this group for a while but never really contributed because of school (and some laziness too - hate to admit). Though I do try to read - or at least get to know - the books as best as I can. I really like Emma as an actress, and more so after seeing how she strives to raise awareness about feminism. I thought that it'd be great if more people could learn about her work, so I immediately applied after knowing that OSS is looking for volunteers to translate. I really hope that in this way I can not only contribute to this group but also spread information and raise awareness about feminism like I've always wanted to. Looking forward to starting translating! :D

Bizzare_a | 3 comments Hi all!

My name is Amanda and I am 17 years old (turing 18 in Sep.). I come from China and I am gonna study in NYU in the US starting this fall.

Emma Watson has been my role model since I first saw her in cinema. She is inspiring and insightful. I appreciate everything she is doing for all women around the world as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. I've always been interested in Feminism and achieving equality between men and women. I hope I can get to know more about Feminism and find out what I could do through this reading experience in the book club!

PS. I am a member of the OSS Translations Service and I hope to spread the equality message forward to not only China but all parts the world.

Manon Pujol | 2 comments Hi everyone!
My name is Manon Pujol, I am 18 years old and I am from France. I simply adore reading, I love learning from books as I am very curious!
I've admired Emma Watson since as long as I can remeber... She is an amazing role model and I cannot count how many times I've watched her speech at the UN about gender equality. This subject affect me very much and more I read about it, more I try to understand it properly and to take actions for it. As I am entering University, I'm really looking forward to learn as much as I can about feminism and gender equality through this book club. I am very new to this one, I have entered it a while ago but couldn't really follow it... I am really trying from now on to read all the books I've missed and therefore take part in all the conversations!
Can't wait to know more about all of you!

x Manon

I'm Leigh-Ann and I'm 21. I love reading books and engaging in any kind of conversation about them. I'm still in college and finding the time to read is becoming harder and harder. Still, I hope that while I'm on Goodreads and in this group I'll find tons of books to read and at least try to read a few.

Peace XO

Nina | 1 comments Looks like there are lots of Chinese girls here! ^_^

I'm also Chinese. My name is Nina and I'm a fashion designer. I'm one of the volunteers for the translation project.

In fact, I've been doing something similar for 5 years now, in some none-profit subtitle groups.

I just read what Brebis said, it's the samehere in China. And things are getting worse, I'm afraid. More and more of my girl friends are getting rejected from a job simply because they are women and presumed to be married soon. Ironically, it's usually a female employers that does such thing.

I do hope this project will change some people, not all, just some people.

message 1434: by SuzanneMeow (new)

SuzanneMeow | 1 comments Hello, everyone. I'm Suzanne, from China. Feminism has always been an aggressive word for most of people which I think has gone far away from the core. We're here asking for equality, respect and even basic human rights. We've never been eager to achieve something unreasonable. But how this world react to our voice? I'm very glad that I can be a part of this.

I have noticed that there are so many wrongs to right in the current society since I forstered outlook on world. As far as I am concerned, feminism means equal rights. Just like the speech made by emma in the UN, no matter girls or boys should be judged in view of outdated gender conception. I am lucky to know emma and learn feminism in my childhood. It has made me a better person. I am going to be an English teacher soon, I think it's important to tell the next generation what's right. So I came here.

I'm also interested in intersectionality, particular as how gender studies impacts disability studies.
