message 901: by Cindy (new)

Cindy | 1 comments Hey, I'm Cindy. I'm a high school freshman from Foxboro, MA. I love playing the violin and reading.

I decided to join this book club because I'm a huge fan of Emma Watson not just because she's an awesome actress (she was brilliant as Hermione in Harry Potter) but because I am also a feminist. It feels like I'm one of the youngest members here, but I'm really excited to join this group and meet everyone!

message 902: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1 comments Hey Y'all!

I'm Kristen, 29 year old wife and mommy of 2, from Concord, NC. I have a dog, named Cooper, who has been the furry little love of my life for the past 9 years. I'm a proud Christian, and hugely involved with my church. I'm also insanely passionate about dance, which works out well, since I'm a dance teacher 5 days a week.

I decided to join this book club 1) because I love Emma Watson and how she has used her fame in such a positive, inspiring way...and 2) because I spent 2015 being made to constantly feel "less than" for being a woman, and I don't want [myself or anyone else] to ever feel that way again. Oh, and 3) because I genuinely do love to read.

To Cindy, who was the last person I saw post before me, your age doesn't matter, dearest. Feminism is a beautiful thing to embrace at any age. With this being your first year of high school, now just might be the perfect time for you to begin to understand how amazing the title of "woman" can be.

Here's to an exciting new adventure!

*Kristen*

message 903: by Abby (new)

Abby (abby_ep) Hello all! My name is Abby and I'm about to celebrate my 24th birthday! I'm a single mother and an anthropological enthusiast.

I joined this group because I want to see inspiring women through an avenue I understand well. Reading. It's the "more than a hobby" hobby that keeps me sane. I'm excited to read and see how you all take in what Emma has to offer!

message 904: by Claire (new)

Claire Elise | 4 comments Hi Crystal, I love your viewpoint! I agree that feminism is a very important topic that should be passed down through generations and offspring. I really, really want more people to be aware of this!

My name is Claire and I'm 15 years old. I live in Ohio.

Feminism is significant in my life because I have always wanted to inspire other people and help women. I really want to help change the world.

Sorry, I don't really know what to say! I'm quite awkward in clubs and I'm especially awkward knowing that Emma can see anything in this club, even my awkward comments! I'll admit, I'm a bit starstruck. She's my idol! So please bear with me as I adjust to everyone and begin to open up.

I can't wait to start reading and get to know everyone here! :)

message 905: by Jomjitre (new)

Jomjitre Zimmerman | 3 comments Hi everyone! I'm Jomjitre (but everyone calls me JJ for short). I'm a 37 year old computer engineer living in Colorado. I joined this book club because I am interested in discussing feminism with other people around the world :D I started following Emma after she became a UN Ambassador, and have admired her work to bring equality to women all over the globe. When I saw that she started this book club I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to meet and talk with other like-minded people. I am super excited, and cannot wait to get started!

Ailbhe | 5 comments Hi my name is Ailbhe and I am from Ireland. I hope to contribute to changing the world views on feminists as well as attempting to obtain equal views on women. I am still in school and emma watson is my idol and I one day hope to be like her. (It also helps I love books ;)

message 907: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Saunders | 12 comments My name is Jennifer. I am 15 yrs old and live in Sydney, Australia. I really love reading and I am a feminist and a fan of Emma's so I heard about this and figured it was probably a good idea. I am really into the work that Emma and the UN do in helping people to understand and access things which are their basic rights as human beings. I also have always wanted to join a bookclub, so its kind of a win-win situation.

message 908: by John (new)

John McManus (johnmcmanusreads) Hi Everyone,

My name is John and I live outside Philadelphia in the United States. I started here on Goodreads a few years ago, logging my reading, and really enjoy writing too. I have a MA in writing and also have written and recorded three albums.

As for why I am in this group, it's because I believe in equality, be it racial, religious, sexual orientation, or gender. Emma is such an inspiration for us all, and that's another reason why I am here. I just watched her HeForShe speech at UN again, and I appreciate that she highlights the role men have to play in the feminist movement, just as whites did in the civil rights movement, and just as straight people do in the gay rights movement.

Well, I'm off to start 'My Life On the Road'...

message 910: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello everybody!

My name is Jana, I'm 20 and originally from Germany.
I found out about this book club on accident and I think it's a serendipity.
As soon as I was able to read I was a real bookworm. Everytime I haven't had something to do you found me with a book in my hands.
But as I grew up and life gets busier, I barely red even if I still like it.
I joined this club to keep me reading, because I believe that reading is the key to knowledge and in a world of media (what isn't a bad thing) to less people try to do learn more about the world.

Reading means education and this is a big part of feminism and I hope that this book club helps everybody of us to do something for equality even if it's 'just' the privilege of knowledge.

I hope we'll have a lot of great books and interesting talks in the future!

Julie (alien_indisguise) Hi!

My name is Julie and I'm from Michigan. I joined because I love reading and am hoping to learn about/read books I would have otherwise never picked up. DFTBA.

message 912: by Katy (new)

Katy (katyannross) Hi everyone! My name is Katy Ross. I am 21 years old and I am from New Mexico. Reading is my passion and, since I was a little girl, I have always dreamed of being part of a book club. That, and the fact I consider myself a feminist, is the reason why I joined this book club. It is truly empowering and inspiring to see 70,000 + individuals come together, in a truly magnificent way. I want to thank Emma for coming up with this brilliant idea and I look forward to laughing, crying, discussing, learning and growing with each and every one of you. ❤

message 913: by Chandni (new)

Chandni (chandn23) | 1 comments Hey everyone!!
I'm Chandni, 16years old and from India...
Well i joined this book club because I absolutely love reading!! They say when you open a book you open a new world..who cannot agree with this?
Also, I'm a huge fan of Emma and consider her my source of inspiration..she is a true feminist icon and a role model to adults, teenagers and children alike...
So it's wonderful to be here and hope to learn something new everyday..

message 914: by Michael (new)

Michael | 2 comments Hello! My name's Michael. I'm 25 and originally from NJ.

I recently joined Emma's HeForShe movement and saw this book club start up. It's nice to see a feminist organization that's main message isn't how terrible I am for being a guy and even asks for my participation. I decided to join and add whatever insight or support I could to the group.

I look forward to discussing the books Emma picks with everyone.

message 915: by Rose (new)

Rose Koh | 1 comments Hello! My name is Rose, 19 and am from Singapore. Emma is an inspiration to me, and by joining this group, I hope to gain more new insights about feminism and meet like-minded people (and I really love reading too!) :)

message 916: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Mae | 1 comments Hi! I am Sherry Mae Gaspar a 5th BS Industrial Engineering student from the Philippines. I joined this club because I want to support the cause about feminism. As I go through my course I've seen that engineering field has been dominated by mostly men. I wonder if it is just because of streotyping or women are not that encouraged to take the course. In my opinion women can excel in any field as much as men can. Moreover, I admire Emma Watson's work with UN to achieve gender equality in all aspects. I hope that through this group and the books to read women will be more aware of more things that we can do other than being confined of what the world sees us to be.

message 918: by Viet (new)

Viet | 3 comments Hello, you beautiful people!

My name is Viet, and I'm 24 years young. Feminism is a part of many movements I wish to see overcome the population with support and believers. It's great to see like-minded individuals come together and share thoughts and support. I'm a huge fan of people who care for world peace and advocate themselves to do better in their lifetime. My belief--humans should all have equality in every aspect. Female, Male, Gay, Straight, etc. are all subcategories that should not affect the whole population in regards to equality. We are all humans! Equality is for all!

Chadi | 6 comments Hey everyone!
My name is Chadi, I'm 22 and I'm from Belgium. I graduated from a bachelor in European Studies and I am now following a master in political communication. I joined this group because I strongly support feminism and gender equality. I also like reading, so being part of this discussion is a good combination of both.

I joined this group because I love reading and I've been willing to support the feminist movement, with all the knownledge I can help spread to women in the world.
That's why I love Emma's work and I believe that this group will bring a lot of interesting discussions and, of course, a good reading.
I'm very proud to join this group!

message 925: by Georgia (new)

Georgia | 1 comments My name is Georgia and I live in Australia. I joined this book club because I would like to learn more about feminism.
Recently feminism and 'sexism' have been cropping up in conversations and largely in the media. I have noticed that in many of the stories the media have been dragging down men. I want to know whether that is really what feminism stands for because I always believed that feminism stood up for women instead of dragging men down.
It is all very confusing and I believe that this club can help me understand more about feminism and what should be classified as sexism.

message 928: by Jasmin (new)

Jasmin (ermelyn) Hello everyone :)

I'm Jasmin, 19yo from Germany, and a little late to the party.
I have been admiring Emma for a while now, even more as a person than an actress.
I joined this book club in the hope of finding new, interesting and thought-provoking books to read, and also be able to share a bit of experience with the GR community.
And also, because I'm a raging feminist.

I look forward to the exchange with you guys :)

message 929: by Concetta (new)

Concetta | 13 comments Hello everyone! It's so nice to meet you all!

My name is Concetta, I'm 23 years old and from Switzerland.
Like a lot of you, I find that Emma Watson is an inspiring Person and admire her work for the UN. In my eyes, she is the only actress of her generation , who does something extraordinary with the popularity she gets.
I find it fantastic, that so many people are interested in this topic and share there opinions and thoughts through a book club. In our hectic world, where taking time to read a book and truly deal with gender equality is a real treasure.

I want to be more aware of this issue and get as much knowledge as I can.

It fills me with joy to get to know you better and share my thoughts with you all!

Let's start this wonderful adventure!!!

message 933: by Kayla (new)

Kayla | 2 comments Hi! My name is Kayla Griffin. I am 29 years old and I live in Bridgeport, WV (close to WVU). I am a library media specialist at a middle school in Harrison County.

Feminism is important to me because I work with young women everyday and see the effects of both positive and negative influences on their lives. I have developed and implemented a girls club at my school that focuses on topics such as body image, healthy relationships, building boundaries, being a good friend, career and life planning, social media, and sexual health. This has become a passion of mine.

Also, Emma Watson rocks.

Hi Crystal! I love that you pointed out how important it is recognize the steps that past feminist leaders have had on women today. I think it is important for young women today to know as much about feminist leaders, both past and present.

message 938: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1 comments Hello to all!

My name is Jessica, I'm 16 years old and I live in England. The reason I joined this book club is because from a very young age I have looked up to Emma as a role model and love the work that is doing with the UN.
I am also currently taking Language and Literature as one of my A-Levels and thought it would be a great way to expand my knowledge of Literature as well as being able to talk to group of people who love books as much as I do!

message 939: by Fahmi (new)

Fahmi Kamil | 1 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Fahmi from Indonesia. I recently read another discussion about 'should men be part of feminist movement?'. And my answer to that is: YES!

I joined this group because I see the importance of men's involvement. We (men) need to increase our realization that the level of gender discrimination and violence against women are still high! Globally!!

Based on the UN data, it is estimated that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives.

So yes, any feminist movement is for everyone. Women and men, we need to act together! Enough said.

message 941: by Amnmacn (new)

Amnmacn | 1 comments Hello Everyone,
Wow, I'm so impressed - people from everywhere with the same intent! So great to read about all of you!
My name is Amanda, I'm 66, and living in the Austin, Texas Metro area. I spent nearly 30 years in the Bay Area and was an active feminist - (read protester, picketer, etc.) - during the 70's.
But, at that time the feminist literature was, I felt, really pedantic!
I was definitely a failed feminist - could not plod through Simone de Beauvoir! I have since come to the realization that feminist literature is not all of the academic variety.
I joined this group today because I've slacked off on reading books - a poor trend Id like to reverse. I also want to be exposed to feminist perspectives from a global scale and was drawn by the link to Emma's work with the UN. Rejection of feminism is largely based on ignorance and mis-information.
Humankind is uplifted when women are empowered, with the ever present issues of violence on women and human trafficking,
the tenets of feminism must guide solutions.

message 942: by Gabriela (new)

Gabriela (gabrielavc) | 13 comments There are already so many messages here already! I'm Gaby, from Peru, 27 years old. I'm here mainly to learn. Feminism has always come naturally to me, and only recently I've realized how so many people view it as a negative thing. Only recently, when the subject has become a regular topic, hints of underlying gender inequality start to pop up, things I was so used to that I never really saw. I guess that's mainly why I'm here. Read, learn, share, and give a little to the equality cause from my corner of the world.

message 943: by Kat (new)

Kat Trina | 15 comments Hi all!

Everyone calls me Kat, and I'm currently in Massachusetts.

I heard about Emma Watson's (twitter) bookclub via another feminist book club here on GR, and decided to tag along because
1. i love reading in a group, since it pushes me to engage with material I might otherwise not have read or discovered,

2. Feminist Theory and I are in a deeply committed relationship

3. Emma watson! She's making bibliophilia and feminism sexy, and why wouldn't I want to be a part of that?!

Fahmi from Indonesia: well said! It bothers me when people portray the feminist movement as purely a battle of the sexes, since men are also victims of rigid gender tropes.

As long as everyone tries to mind their set of privileges, no doubt! cooperation is essential to gender parity.

message 944: by Myriam (new)

Myriam Karaman | 1 comments Hello everyone !

My name is Myriam and I live in Lille in France. Are there others French people in the newsgroup ? ;)
I am really enjoyed to be here with you !

I joined this group because i feel very concerned by this vision of Feminism : Feminism which is not characterized as the hatred of Men, but as an equality between both (mens and womens) !

As woman, i define myself as an independent and ambitious person. As Emma said to introduce "He For She" campaign, it is a picture of mutual assistance between mens and womens, not a balance of power .. And i find it's a very great idea to make a book club about the feminist movement, for EVERYONE !

I joined this group too because i LOVE reading books and exchange views !

Thank you Emma Watson ! :)

Victoria Hein | 1 comments Hello everyone I'm Victoria, 19 years old and from Germany. Right know I'm living in Transkarpatia (western ukraine) because of my Voluntary year. In Germany I don't really had a problem with discrimination, but here in ukraine I really see how important feminism and a discussion about gender equality is. Discrimination is here not so obviously as in countries like south africa, but I think it's also the little things that are counting, And I also love reading and discussing what I read.
I'm very thankfull that Emma gave us this opportunity.

Jenna Hedderson | 13 comments Hi Everybody!

I'm Jenna. I'm 25 and live in Toronto, Canada.

I've joined this group to enhance my knowledge of feminism and feminists from other generations.

I really enjoy reading and read daily on the train during my commute. Lately I've been into a lot of memoirs and non-fiction, so this book club seemed right up my alley!

Plus, of course, I'm a huge Emma Watson fan - from Hermione to UN Ambassador, girl's got some serious talent and class. (In an alternate universe we're bffs, obviously.)

:)

I'm Jo, 16 years and from northern Germany.
I'm now joining this book club because I think it can be very interesting and mind-opening to discuss certain books with other people from around the world and (seemingly) from every range of age. I'm also a big supporter of feminist ideals and I think that it will be fun to get into contact with people that think alike.
And, Sophie, you might be (like me) one of the younger ones in this group, but I don't think age plays a big role here. :D
