Introduction

I joined the book club because I want to learn more about feminism, how to be more aware of the different aspects of feminism, and to be more comfortable with being a feminist.

I'm Katie from the United States, and I'm feeling' 22.
I joined the book club because I love reading, feminism, and Emma Watson. I love the idea of a global community for discussions/ insight and accountability to actually finish the books within the deadline (we live busy lives, amirght?!)
I hope to achieve a greater knowledge of the history/evolution of feminism, practical applications for every day life that wouldn't have been learned otherwise, and a diplomatic understanding of perspectives that deviate from my own.

My name is Dominique I live in California,USA and I am 20.
I joined this club because I really love Emma and everything that she stands for. I also like to consider myself a Feminist but I don't really know much about it. I love reading more than anything, but I am stuck in the fantasy/sci-fi genre and this that this would be a good place to start expanding my mind.

I joined this club because of my love for books and reading. Another reason was to open my mind and perspective on equality. I believe I always have been a feminist but I'm just now walking in the identity of being a feminist. I also long to see ignorance educated in a culture that denies women (as well as men) civil rights such as when to speak, what to say, what to wear, who to be, and so on. I hope one day people will not cower down in fear or become surged with anger when they hear the word "feminism".

1. Tell us some basic information about yourself eg your name, where you are from.
My name is Doug, I am 31, from Michigan, in the United States. I have lived here all my life. I am a pansexual, liberal, atheist, feminist. I am politically active with both my voice, time, and pocketbook. This was required in my house by my parents and has served me well into adulthood. I love to read and write and I have to sometimes pick up a pen just to get down my strong opinions. I try to think deeply with the intellect that I have and I practice empathy every day by engaging with perfect strangers and my friends when I have a chance. I enjoy being outdoors on vacations, I am not employed currently, as my employer recently shut down (on December 15th) and I am actively looking for another job. I am spending the year goal-oriented, so far, trying to reach my goals of reading 20 books, losing weight for my health, cutting down on my credit card debt, finishing up school, and spending time with loved ones. I'm a bit of a messy person in terms of cleaning. I believe everyone has inherent worth and should be valued for more than their body, which is why I am a feminist. Enough?
2. Share why you join this book club and what you hope to achieve
I hope to gain more knowledge about feminism and to share my opinions and views with fellow feminists. I love a good debate and I love to talk about those issues I am passionate about. But you need to be informed to do that. So, that's why I am here. To gain knowledge and sharpen the argument for feminism.
3. Comment on the post above yours to spread the love!
I have noticed that a lot of people are drawn to this issue, from all over the world, and Siarne is no exception, being from Australia. I, too, hope to broaden my horizons and I hope we have tons of new thoughts out there from the books we will be reading! Welcome, Siarne.

My name is Alice. I'm 21 and from New Zealand. I live in a teeny-tiny little town called Woodside tucked away under the Mungatua mountains.
I joined this group because I am a bit of a nerdy little bookworm and am always looking for new books to read. I like to read from many different genres, but have never read much about feminism and all that jazz. I'm a huge supporter of Emma Watson's work for the UN with gender equality, so this seemed like an awesome opportunity.
Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say! xx

My name is Leila (pronounced "lay-lah"), I'm 29 years old, living in SLC, Utah. I'm almost done getting my BA and BS in History and International Studies (focus on Foreign Relations and Security), minoring in Russian, working on an International Relations Certificate and also in the process of getting my Undergraduate Research Student Designation. I was just awarded a research grant for this semester. That was really exciting! :D
I'm a huge bookworm, but due to how heavy my courses have been for the past few years, my reading choices have been on the lighter side of being challenged mentally. I want to try and sprinkle in heavier subjects as I get closer to my degrees. I also want to expand my reading scope, as I've been pretty limited these past few years.
This book club comes at a good time for me, since I'm taking a gender studies class called the Price of Gender this semester. I'm interested in expanding my experiences and knowledge in this subject area. I've always been a proponent of opportunities for women, equality, respect and so on, but not so much in an outspoken, this is what I call myself, sort of way. It's always been more in my actions. So I want to learn more about those who do call themselves feminists, what everyone thinks and feels. I want to further educate myself.
I look forward to spending more time with all of you!

My name is Megan, 23 years old, from the Netherlands and about to graduate as a Data Science student!
The last is important because I am very interested in typical 'men's worlds', such as the technology sector. Although I am definitely feeling that women are catching up fast haha
What I hope to take from this book club is generally more information on equality and feminism. I feel like people are always calling me a feminist in a laughing matter and I want to be able to confront that head on, and be able to get in depth as to why they find it funny.

I Am Pauline, 18 years old, an engineering student from the Philippines.
I joined this group because I love reading, it's like a breather after all the stress I get from studying engineer..."
Hej hej Pauline!
I love that your studying engineering, so cool!

I've decided to join un this group because I want to learn more about feminism. I thik that we live in a chauvinist world and I want that my sister, my gilfriend, my friends would live in better conditions

I read as much as I watch tv shows and science fiction is my favourite genre.
I have joined this book club to discover good books about women, written by men and women.
I feel feminism is needed in our world because women still get comparatively substandard treatment; and a lot of women are guilty of perpetuating this treatment. It's going to take work to get women to be treated equally to men. And I am trying to contribute by first challenging regressive perspectives in my conservative Muslim family.

My name is Leila (pronounced "lay-lah"), I'm 29 years old, living in SLC, Utah. I'm almost done getting my BA ..."
Hi Leila,
Wow, your qualifications are envy-inducing and your course on gender sounds quite interesting. I am sure it will give you a fantastic breadth of view regarding gender roles.
All the best!

I'm Frostkaktus von Hamburg in Germany, 42 years old, female and a lawyer.
Like Megan - hello Megan! :) - I'm more interested in typical man-stuff, than in typical woman-stuff. But I slowly realized that there isn't typical men- and women-stuff. We are just taught, that things/topics have a gender or are for a special gender and it's hard to break out of this thinking.
My best friends were male and they never wanted to be sexist, but it's so deep in our cultur that we don't realize how sexist things are or how sexist we act. And I think that is one point why it is so hard to fight sexism: We don't realize how deep it is woven in our society.
The strange thing is, that as a woman myself, I acted sexist in the past, without even realizing it and with the thinking, that I'm a feminist.
Feminism is a lot of work for both genders and I'm willing to do my part and learn more, about the hidden cruelties for all genders.
I'm not sure, if I will always find enough time to read all the books in this group, but I try. :)

Tumblr really helped me define what feminism is and why we needed it. I used to shy away from the word now I'm proud to be a feminist and I'll tell anyone I meet.

I'm Pia 43 year old women from Sweden.
I love books and been a feminist as long as I can remember.
I've read many already, from SCUM to Catilin Moran.
But looking forward to discover new books and hear your thoughts about them. Also to get strong from seeing all feminists around the world. Sometimes you feel weak by yourself.
Open for different opinions.

I have been admiring Emma since I can remember myself. Back then I admired her because of her attitude, style, looks and acting skills but now she has clearly become a role model for me after all those actions she has taken to promote gender equality.
I was a feminist even before Emma declared herself as one. I have always believed that women can be heroes and that they are not always the ones who need saving. And as a female that is my general attitude towards life.
I hope that this book club becomes a place where I can discuss my thoughts with other people as well as deepen my knowledge about feminism and gender equality.
Thank you for this opportunity!

Being a mother of two boys it's my hope to raise to young men who are proud to say they're also feminists and stand for equality.
Thank you for this club Emma!

Emma is one of the most inspiring role models i've had since forever, and when she came up with this idea I instantly felt like I should be apart of it. Gender equality does not exist in the XXI century, and this problem shouldn't be something we could ignore just because some women do live well and have admirable careers, because a lot more women suffer the consequences of this inequality everyday.
Women are finally stepping forward and assuming a social position, and I'm so glad I'm seeing this movement while I'm growing up and becoming a woman as well.
Thank you Emma

Intersectional feminism is a must.

I am also joining because I love to read, and I feel that there is a lot that can be offered in the literary world from both genders. I also feel that women can be just as inspirational as men, and it's high time that we recognised this!
**Disclaimer** I have Asperger's Syndrome, so I can sometimes come across as blunt or misunderstanding. If you feel that I have misunderstood/offended you in some way, please do let me know and I will do my best to rectify or clarify the situation.

I am joining this reading group , because Emma is my idol. I would like to learn a lot of things from her. Besides that, i think that knowledge is the fastest way to change a person if u want to.That' s y this reading group seems meaningful which can share our thoughts freely here and listen to people's voice and opinion from the bottom of heart. Furthermore, i love language , culture , and traveling . Anybody who have the same interests as me ,u can message me if u want to.. Hope that i can make more friends here ! <3

I'm Ela, 28 and from Malaysia (Hi JiaSin! and everyone of course!)
I joined this book club because I am quite hesitant to declare it out loud that i'm a feminist. Deep inside I think I am. I wanted to understand more about feminism. Plus, this will be a good platform to discuss and see different point of views globally.
I'm excited. Thanks Emma for putting us together!

I've joined this group with the hope of learning more about this topic. I am a feminist because I believe we still have a lot to do, and I want to be part of it. It really makes me sad to see how many people still don't understand this issue, but I'm optimistic because I've found this amazing group. I hope to learn a lot from you!
Also, as a teacher, I'm really interested on what I can do in the classroom regarding this topic. I work with very young children and I'm shocked to see that not a lot has changed from when I was a kid in terms of gender equality.
I'm looking forward to having the first book in my hands, and really excited to be part of this community. Nice to meet you all!
Have a good day! :D

I think feminism poisons our society and I have being advise to read more about the topic so I can educate my self better. I think this is the perfect opportunity for me to do this. This idea sounds like a lot of fun.
If it is possible I would like to suggests that we work with free to download books. Because my budget is not really that big for this. I appreciate the understanding.

My name is Zoe and I come from China! I am 21-year-old and very excited to join this big 'book' family! I am not only a big fan of Emma but also very hooked on studying female role both in real life and art realm.
I wish we can share ideas with each other, learn from each other, thus making ourself better than yesterday!

My name's Isabelle, I'm 13 and live in Sydney, Australia.
I've decided to join this book club as in my lifetime, I've seen multiple accounts of female shaming. After hearing Emma Watson's feminism speech, it inspired me to stand up against sexism. I find the history of feminism & female rights quite intriguing, especially the suffragettes & Malala Yousafzai's story.
I also have a passion for reading, hence my being on goodreads. I'm excited to broaden my horizons to more feminist themed books, as i mostly read horror & adventure books such as 'it' by Stephen King so this will be a new experience for me.
looking forward to the future!

Hi everyone,
My name is Sue and I am a high school teacher of ...yep, English. I teach in Victoria, Australia. I can also teach Lit, History and Humanities but my true passion is English. I am qualified to teach Prep right through to secondary, but really could not bear to be with little kids that long. ;) I have a M.Ed and my thesis was about the equality of educational policy. I am very outspoken in matters of social justice and equity.
I don't recall when I actually realised I was a feminist, I remember my mum allowing me the read Greer's " The Female Eunuch" when I was about 13 and my teacher taking it from me saying it was not 'appropriate reading' for a 13 year old. I am very interested in the 'absent' of what we are not told in a novel or history about an issue, and the why of that.
I wanted to belong to this bookclub as I think the scope and variety as well as the vastness of where we are all from and our experiences will make it worthwhile for us all.

Hi Crystal,
Good luck with the study, not sure what they do for Women's Studies in the US but here it a Literature/History/Sociology. I agree with you about "the strength of women in the past has put us in the position we are in today. Without our past leaders we could not have made future leaders..." and it needs to be recognised and acknowledged.
Hi everybody!
My name is Eden, I am 23 years old and live in Germany.
I am a feminist for several years now and it as very important topic for me. I am queer in many ways and my pronouns (if it ever comes up) are they/them.

My name is Maria. I'm a true believer in feminism and I think creating this book club was a wonderful idea! I'm a huge fan of Emma Watson and her work and I'm very glad that I can be part of this group. I enjoy reading and I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter books and movies.
I joined this group because I want to learn more about feminism and to share my opinions with other people, about feminism.
Nice to meet you all! :D

I forget to introduce myself. So this is my introduction. I am 29 years old regular guy that comes from Slovenia. I always love to read a books and I started with "5 friends", which is rough translation of our Slovenian series of books for primary school children. In high school I continued with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc books, and in college, I used to started looking for the sense of life and life meaning.
Now I consider myself as truth seeker, truth supporter, life coach. I was having everything in life and for the difference of other people I didn't stop looking for the love and happiness. My question was always, what is true love and what is happiness, can I achieve those, and what path should I step on? In my 23 years on this planet I was very upset and dissatisfied with myself, even though I won't change anything on me and I didn't regret anything in life. I didn't have any big wish and I was having a pretty good life in a very healthy body. However this was time that I was very dissatisfied with myself and after a while I started reading books again. I believe somehow that books will give me the answers to what it is happening to me. So I started with self suggestions book, with famous The Secret, with Louis L. Hay and so on. But nothing really ever changed in me.
But there was a time, that I came by with this book, that it is actually written in my native language. However at first this was a book that didn't understand it clearly. But after a few readings, I started realising something. The books red line was not a story line. The book did not say anything in-direct, but everything was written in fantastic and, most important, working order of words. I was getting more and more good feelings, more and more strange dreams (which writer also said they will come), and more and more I was surprised, that I saw solutions in real life problems, the more I read this book. It was an phenomenon, that I didn't quite understand.
Today I understand that it was the truth in his very own naked form. I didn't understand how is that possible that someone writes a book, that includes a truth for this life time, but I realised something. There were a very important books of truth like Bhagavad Gita, Holly Bible, etc, in human lifetime, and this was the book of truth for the 21st century!
Now I help to spread the truth, that will people realise, how important it is to accept another person, to not judge someone else by our own knowing and to do for life as much as we can, not to looking at others.
I will like that HeForShe reaches the specified goal, but I too know that this is impossible without right approach and right words. The words has lost its meaning in our age and love, happiness, health and security are only advertising accessory, which are used to bring more money to monetary system. I am here to introduce to others (and to HeForShe campaign, if it will be willing) the scientific approved theory and help them to achieve their goal. The words have their original meaning and I am here to help to return the world their greatest values, happiness, respect, friendship, relationship, family and love. The gender equality is only "side effect" of my work.
The life is beautiful and I would like to help people to come to this realisation. I have introduced REI, in the "What is Feminism" topic through the description how REI sees the Feminism. However REI is not only useful with description of Feminism but addresses a numerous situations that human can find himself in. The one method that has been created with help of REI is the method of completely eliminate dyslexia and can be found here: http://savvysciencepublisher.com/down... REI however does not only describe a individual, but also actions that are happening globally.
If someone will have any questions, please let me know in Private Messages!

I'm Leah, and I am a new lawyer living in North Carolina, USA. I'm 25 years old and a big feminist who also loves to read. Can't wait to see where this goes!

My name is Silvana. I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I'm interested in knowing more about feminism and there's no better way than reading books about it! So I look foreward to read all the books you recommend about this topic

As soon as I read Emma Watson was creating a book club, I knew I had to be a part of it in any way I could. I'm excited to read so many different opinions on books all printed the same. I hope to shatter previous perspectives and add on to ones I've already known.
Here's to all of us expanding our minds, empowering our hearts, and changing our world.
Xoxo

I'm Tom. From the United States (east coast my whole life). I'm 41 and been following Emma's UN and women's issues work on Twitter.
I'm always looking to improve myself and, hopefully, those around me so I joined the group expecting to educate myself with lots of great recommendations that will help see and learn about the world and various issues better.
Thanks to Emma for setting this up and thanks to everyone for letting me in!
Hi I'm Rachel, I'm 19 and I'm from Liverpool, England.
I joined the book club after reading about it in an online article from Elle magazine. I want to be able to support a decision about feminism from what I learn from this book club. I would also like to do more to support feminism.

Hey Zoe! (: Same here! It's nice to meet you.

My name is Olivia. I'm turning 20 in a few days and am a college sophomore in Vermont (USA), but my home is in Connecticut. I am an English major and a Gender, Sexualities, and Women Studies Minor. I joined this book club because of being an intersectional feminist, a lover of reading and writing, and a huge fan of the Harry Potter books/movies and of Emma Watson.
I am so excited to be a part of a community of people that will support each other, generate intelligent discussion about feminism and equality through my favorite thing (reading), and spread peace and love. Happy reading everyone!

I wanted to join this book club because I had recently joined another with a group of friends and all of the books that are being picked for that are terribly boring and uninteresting for me. So I'm making that club more about the social aspect and this one will help fulfill my love of learning and develop my interests and feelings in feminism. I'm already really enjoying this book selection and look forward to the next one!
