Stephanie (stephsco) | 1 comments I'm Stephanie, 30*cough* something ;) living in USA: Illiniois (outside of Chicago!). I read and write Young Adult books and my first book will be published this year.

A few friends of mine decided to start an in-person book club where we read books by authors who are non-white and/or from another culture other than we (mostly white minus one Egyptian-American) in our group. I'm so excited to add more variety to my reading, including more feminist writers.

message 652: by Milos (new)

Milos Petrovic | 1 comments Hello!!!
My name is Milos, I'm 17 years old and I'm from Leskovac, Serbia.
I'm a big fan of Emma Watson for years because of her acting, but I started to admire her even more when she started to work with UN and launched her campaign HeForShe. I really support everything she did and still continues to do because I believe in all the things she says and fights for.
I joined this club because I really like reading, but also because I think of myself as a feminist. I really hope that this experience will give us all better knowledge about subject that Emma talks about and that we will have a lot of fun reading great books.
I can't wait! xx

message 654: by Rickie (new)

Rickie | 1 comments Hello Sisters,

My name is Rickie and I live in Seattle. I am a feminist and have established a foundation called Kind Women. We are a tribe of kind people doing kind things and my mission is to lead my global sisters of all ages forward into our greater Truth. We are powerful beyond belief and we must do this together to transform ourselves first, each other and then our planet. I'm excited!!!!

Crystal, I lived in NYC and was in the modeling industry. I left the modeling world because I could no longer, in good conscience, teach young women that it was more important how they looked than who they were.

Thank you, Emma, for having the courage and accepting the guidance to light the way!

I joined because I run my own feminist book club (and a film club) + I want to join more clubs/read more books :)

message 656: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Hullfish | 2 comments Hi. My name is Kimberly, from Swedesboro NJ. I'm forty-something, and love Emma's movies. When I saw this group she was running and the topic I wanted to join, though my idea of feminism tends to be a little different. :) I'm looking forward to some great books and discussion. I love bookclubs!

message 657: by Naz (new)

Naz Hello everyone! It's great to see so many people in this group, it is very inspirational and gives me a sense of excitement.

My name is Naz and I am from Turkey.
I have graduated with a degree in English Literature; my degree helped me a lot with women and gender studies, however the biggest eye-opener for me is my country. Feminism and the correct knowledge of what it is and how it can be promoted is very very important for me because lack of knowledge or incorrect knowledge causes a lot of misunderstandings, prejudice and judgment for many people. I think this book club is a brilliant idea to unite people and spread the word to benefit all.

message 659: by Julia (new)

Julia | 1 comments Hey there, my name ist Julia and I am from Germany. So sorry first for my broken and bad englisch.
I am going to do my A Levels (Abitur) in englisch and one of the topics is going to be “feminists“ and “great woman“. So i tought it would be a very great idea to join this group, because i am really fascinated about this theme.
But after joining in i saw so many topics. I can not read them all. This is the reason why i started this new topic.
I wish that this group will be organized and all the tausends of people can say what they think. But please... topics like “emma do you shool visits?“ are not very helpfull.
Hope i dont write something that others wrote before. (Could not read all the stuff before...)
Great new year 2016
Best wishes
Julia

Babs Ferriche (babsferriche) | 1 comments Hello everyone My name is Barbara, i'm 25 years old and i'm from Brasília, Brazil.
I am joining this book club because i want to know more about feminism and how others countries see feminism.

I'm a big fan of Emma and her work in the UN defending feminism.

message 661: by BookLover (new)

BookLover | 1 comments Hi everyone!

I am 18 and I am from Albania. I am joining this club because feminism has always been of great interest to me. For several years I have tried to give my time & contribution in this cause with the aim of making a change in a country that desperately needs it.
I always try to read as much as I can about gender equality thus I consider this club as a means to discover new material and be part of a group of people who care about this topic as much as I do.

Thank you Emma for this idea and for all that you do!

message 662: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Wilson | 1 comments Hi, my name is Veronica. I am an Adjunct English Professor at CSU Bakersfield, so obviously I love reading. I recently had my first child (a little boy named Logan) and I am interested in doing some reading that is just for me. I spend a lot of time reading various books for the classes that I teach, and while I was a grad student I read constantly, but it was never the books that I chose. I would like to get back into the habit of just reading for myself, and this seems like a good way to do so.

message 663: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Jusino (teresajusino) | 1 comments Crystal wrote: "My name is Crystal Ramirez. I live in the heart of the city; Manhattan, New York. I am joining this book club because as a sophomore college student I registered for a couple of women studies class..."

Hello there, Crystal! I'm a native New Yorker myself (a Queens girl!), though I moved to Los Angeles four years ago.

As for my intro:

1. My name is Teresa, and I'm a 36 year old writer who lives in Los Angeles. I write for a website called The Mary Sue, and I eventually hope to be a TV writer. :)
2. I joined this book club, because writing for The Mary Sue, which is a feminist site, has caused me to broaden my feminism in ways I never have before. I've realized that it's something that can always improve and should always be talked about. I hope to get recommendations for some wonderful books by/about women and get in on some intelligent discussion. :)

message 664: by Morgan (new)

Morgan (morgangriffin) Hey Veronica! It's nice to meet you. I'm currently a student at university studying pharmacy so I totally understand wanting to read books that aren't related to studies.

My name is Morgan I'm 23 and finishing my last year of my doctor of pharmacy program in the US.

I am already part of a book club IRL. But when I saw that Emma was putting together a book club on goodreads about feminism I couldn't pass it up. I really admire how Emma has taken her position with the UN to make issues very accessible on a personal level. This is such a new way to connect with fans on an intellectual level that I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

message 666: by Niya (last edited Jan 08, 2016 04:47PM) (new)

Niya N | 1 comments Hi Morgan! I'm Niya - nice to meet you! When I was in school I loved biology and my teacher encouraged me to study to become a doctor, but I am just horrible at chemistry! Well done on your patience and persistence to study pharmacy, it's commendable :)

I'm 24, I live in the UK, and I am a web analyst. Having worked in my industry for a while, I've noticed the apparent lack of female specialists' presence in the field. Feminism is a cause close to my heart, and I simply love books, so this was the perfect opportunity to crank up my reading rate over the next year!

Mihaela Cristina Iacob | 33 comments Hello everyone, I'm Mihaela, I'm 15 and I'm from Romania. I know that a lot of people thinks of romanians really bad things, and I hope you will not judge me because my country or the rumours about it. If anyone have a bad opinion about romanians, maybe I'll could change it :)

I am a huge fan of Emma since I saw her in Harry Potter movies. I love the books and I saw the movies too. I loved the way she played Hermione and then I become a massive fan. After I read about her, I was fascinate of her personality (this happened in 2013, I guess). Then he was names Godwill Ambassador, started HeForShe project and she became more than my favorite actress, she become my model in life. Because of her I became the person I am now, I have a personality and I learned to love myself!
I like reading too, and I like to learn a lot of new stuff about complexe themes like feminism, so I thought and I still think that this club is an oportunity for me!

Dear Emma, I'm so glad you made this, the world must have more people like you!

message 670: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (x3nicolereads) | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Nicole! I'm 25 years old and an American currently living in the UK for graduate school.

I've joined the book club for a few reasons. I've always wanted to be apart of a book club so this seemed like the perfect opportunity! I love reading and discussing. I also have been wanting to learn more about feminism for a while now, so again, this seemed like the perfect opportunity for that. I'm hoping that other than being intellectually stimulating that this group will also be a nice breather from the stresses of graduate school, while also continuing to motivate me to keep leisure reading! And of course I adore Emma and all of the work she is doing to promote feminism!

message 671: by Dominic (new)

Dominic | 6 comments I don't know much about Emma Watson's work as an actor but am interested in her political stance and would enjoy reading her recommendations and sharing my reactions.
As a man I can only support women in their struggle for change and challenge men to confront and dismantle a patriarchal society.

message 672: by Kari (new)

Kari | 3 comments Hello. I'm Kari Aguila, mid 40's, Seattle, WA, USA, and I joined because the conversation about feminism has really bloomed over the last couple years.

I've written two feminist novels, Women's Work and RUN Ragged, which try to really explore the question, "Is equality even possible?" They show a world where the pendulum has swung too far, women now hold the reins where men have always been in charge, and prove that an imbalance in power leads to oppression and corruption (with humanity and a beautiful love story mixed in). I've gotten great responses from readers and book clubs, and am so happy that these conversations are happening again.

For a while there, it was getting pretty frustrating to hear some women saying they didn't "need feminism" at the same time I'd hear other women say, "Things would be so much better if women ruled the world." I think both those views paint feminism as an one-sided issue and the last thing we need in this world is more inflammatory, one-sided rhetoric. It's a deeply complex issue which requires empathy and understanding. I'm hoping as many men as women will join this conversation because we truly can't progress if only half the world is participating.

In my book signing/readings, I had women as young as 16 and as old as 75. I've had men email me about my novels with deep, soul-searching questions and comments. I've learned much about my own preconceived notions and stereotypes since publishing my novels and talking to readers about them, and look forward to learning more. Feminism is a uniquely cross-generational, cross-gender, cross-societal conversation, and the more we connect with women and men about the struggles toward gender parity and societal equality, the better.

Can't wait to learn more!

My name's Mariana,a 13 years old girl from Brazil!
I met feminism one year ago,and it was because of Emma's speech on UN about the importance of feminism not just for women, but for everyone. So,I joined this club because I want to know all the
stories and perspectives about the subject.I carry the hope for a social and economic equality of sexes in my spirit.I hope we can make the change.

message 674: by Tia (new)

Tia | 10 comments Hi everyone, my name is Tia and I'm from Australia. I'm 33 years old and I work full time in the insurance industry. I call that my day job, I also write and edit. My second book is due to be published in just a few weeks.

I identify as a feminist and am often frustrated with the still patriarchal society we live in. I know there are women in other countries that are much worse off and believe we all need to take an interest and take action to end the suffering of women around the world due to archaic beliefs and patriarchal attitudes.

Looking forward to some good reads!

message 675: by Anggiana (new)

Anggiana Fardhani (anggianayf) | 1 comments Hello,

I am Anggiana, 19 years old from Jakarta, Indonesia. I'm studying English Literarture in university. I've been a huge fan of Emma since the first Harry Potter. That's why I was so excited when I knew Emma made a bookclub on goodreads and joined it immediately. Also, I love reading, I'm a feminist, but I realised I haven't read a book about feminist itself. So by joining this group I hope to learn more about feminism and equality. I'm looking forward to reading and discussing with you all! :)

message 676: by Kenia (new)

Kenia (keniayeli) | 8 comments Hello!

My name is Kenia. I am 23 years old and from New York City. I don't know what more there is to say other than: I believe in equality. I'm super excited for this group for two reasons. The first is that it's a group geared towards feminist literature. The second is that it is being held by Emma Watson. I'm not one for celebrity but I have a special admiration for those in the spotlight who raise awareness. So, who better to admire than the strong, intelligent and beautiful Emma Watson?

I'm excited for the literature we'll be reading and the discussions we'll be having.

Happy new year, everyone!

P.S. Anggiana: what a beautiful name.

Veronica Castello-Vooght (veronicasbookshelves) | 12 comments Hello, Anggiana and Kenia! It's a pleasure to 'meet' you! :D

My name is Veronica and I am from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Just like many of you, I am also a massive fan of Emma Watson, since the amazing Harry Potter films. I am a Feminist and a social activist, too. Together with a friend, I own an Instagram page and a blog about inspirational women and 'consent culture' content (In portuguese, mainly). It's called 'Admiráveis Mulheres Empoderadas' (A.M.E). I recently graduated in Marketing and I am also a fashion producer and personal stylist. I am here to learn a lot more about Feminism and to share knowledge with as many of you as I can. I am truly glad we now have this space and, as much as Anggiana, I am looking forward to reading and discussing with you all! :D

It was Emma's works in the UN that officially brought my full attention to the issue of gender equality. As a bookworm and a believer of gender equality, I wish to learn more about feminism through reading as well as interacting with people from all around the world in order to make an impact on my society and eventually the world! We can do this peeps! Right now, I better get another bookshelf!

Can't wait to get started! :)

I am Helena, I am 23 years old, studying a bachelor on International Relations and I'm from Mexico City.

I joined this book club because feminism and equality are causes close to my heart, and I think Emma is just the right personality to bring us all toghether.

I hope to read every book posted, but especially, I hope to enrich and to be nourished by the ensuing discussions and debates.

Most of all, I really hope to see not only women, but also men joining this club and sharing their perspectives and learning, as this is pivotal to start a real global conversation on the feminist issue.

Love to all!

Helena.

message 685: by MJ (new)

MJ (mjswickedreads) Hello, I am Michelle and from Northern California.

This group attracted me because of its focus on feminist literature. It is important to be able to explain what feminism is to those who do not understand the movement's goal. The F-word(Feminism) has been demonized and it should not be so! My objective is to find narratives that better exemplify it's goal and share it with others regardless of background.

Hi Terena, I look forward to the same things as well. Funny that we both are from the same region!

message 686: by Aida (new)

Aida Ramli | 1 comments Hi everyone. I am Aida Sophia from Malaysia. Turning the big 4-0 this year and going through a lot of transformation. I have been a bookworm for the longest time. I am a huge Harry Potter fans and just love your character. But what I admire you the most is you speaking at UN about equality and feminism. Tick tick in bucket list. Am going to enjoy this group.

Viviana (vivi-wanderlust) | 2 comments Hello, I am Viviana, I'm 20 years old (nearly 21, actually) and I'm from Chile.

I thought that this group was perfect for me because literature and feminism are both things that I feel passionate about. The fact that we can all now have a community and just discuss about those topics is truly inspiring. I'm really looking forward to reading new authors and just talk about them. It's exciting!

message 688: by Trish9388 (last edited Jan 08, 2016 07:36PM) (new)

Trish9388 | 1 comments What a wonderful group already! I'm Trish, 27 years old, and I'm from the US.

I've been a feminist since before I knew what the word meant-I grew up in a family of 6 girls with strong, encouraging parents who never limited us (and taught us a love of reading and books as well). I was astonished when I became a military officer because it was the first time I was exposed to people who were raised very differently. I became passionate about gender equality, equal opportunity, and freedom of expression for both sexes. I'm now in the medical world as an engineer and love watching brilliant women contribute to patients' quality of life.

I'm ecstatic to see the way that Emma Watson has uplifted both men and women, encouraged more new folks than ever to think about gender equality, and to open up this group for some great dialogue. I was a sociology major in college but haven't dedicated much of my reading to feminist works specifically. Looking forward to this incredible opportunity to read more and connect with some positive, amazing people!

message 692: by M.B. (new)

M.B. Bunnell | 2 comments Hello, all! My name's Michelle, and I hail from Columbus, Ohio.
I first came across feminism in the very first college class I took (WGSST-Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies). Since then, women's rights have been my focus. I'll be attending law school next year for an international law degree with a focus in women's rights.
Feminism, to me, is a basic human dignity. I am no better than others and they are no better than me, but through cooperation and partnership, we can be better together. And I see nothing dirty with that "f" word, using it proudly. I look forward to meeting and debating with you all!

message 693: by a 💐 (new)

a 💐 Hi! My name is Aysha. I'm from the Middle East (I am Arab).
I am 13, turning 14 on March 6.
I joined because I feel like it's unfair that men have no reason to fear going out in the dark, traveling solo, heck they even get paid more! Women should be able to wear whatever they want, without having to worry that men will rape them! So, that is why I would like to help with women equality.

My name is Bianca, I'm seventeen years old and I'm from Brazil.

I joined into this group because I loved the idea of an universal group reading feminism books proposed by Emma Watson, a girl who I admire more and more, and because I love books, I always want read something different and new. However I consider myself a feminist, I don't read as many books as I would like on this theme. So I hope find encouragement and suggestions in this group.
