She literally blew my mind when she wrote that in order for us to differentiate ourselves from the "box" (whatever that box may be), we first had to reinforce the box so that we could differentiate ourselves from it. I mean I literally sat in stunned silence for like 10 minutes after reading that.

Maybe I was just in a special frame of mind when I was reading it, but yeah. It was such an intense experience. The only thing I've read that has even come close is the essay "Women on the Market" by Luce Irigaray (which I mentioned in another thread). What Butler says about gender being performative is so spot on. Especially when reading "Taming of the Shrew" and "Twelfth Night" by Shakespeare.

You aren't old! I turn 39 on Tuesday. I think people underestimate arts and humanities studies because they don't understand just how much we take in. I've read Butler, Irigaray, Marx, Lacan, Freud, Althusser, Bahktin, Baudrillard, Baba, Said, and on and on. Feminism, Marxism, psychoanalytical, formalism, post-modernism, critical race theory, post-colonialism...all to read and write books. So glad I majored in this.

Judith Butler is fantastic. When I do a gender analysis on literature she always ends up on my works cited list.
