Takashi Yuasa (takashiyuasainternationallawyer) | 102 comments One of the reasons kind of tremendous fall of book sales in Japan during the past 20 yrs might be related to Japanese writing book customs, which is my own personal view.
Japanese rarely used typewriting until starting sending e-mails at the end of 20th century. Once Japanese started e-mailing, it is unbelievable to see how people quickly type Japanese sentences based on alphabetical typing skills. Since then Japanese women & men have been enthusiastic w/ typing their e-mails.
The western culture has acccepted typewiters for very long years as tool of writing books.
Thus, typewriting via cell phone/PC and so on has never changed Western book life. But in Japan, once people got accustomed to typing, they've completely forgotten books because for most of 20th Century, drafting of Japanese books were never typewritten but only by handwritten. Probably people would return to books when they start sending e-mails by handwriting, which habits are more closely related books, either reading or writing, in Japanese culture. Thanks.

Oh, that's pretty interesting! I know zero about the publishing world in Japan, haha. Given the fact that you have this reputation of a highly advanced society technology-wise, us Westerners tend to take for granted that you are automatically adapted to each and every new gadget!

When ebooks came to my own country (I am Spanish) they also took their time to become popular because many of us were pretty reluctant to the idea of no longer enjoying paper. There was also a fear that ebooks would sign the death of traditional book formats. However, I now believe such prospect to be highly unlikely. I think ebooks and traditional books will continue to coexist together, both with advantages and disadvantages. At least for now, haha.

You know, Takashi, as far as I know you are the only Japanese member in this forum, which is a real bummer. Therefore, your views on women's issues in your country would be highly appreciated in these boards! I really hope you will join us at other threads. :)

Takashi Yuasa (takashiyuasainternationallawyer) | 102 comments One of the reasons why there was a tremendous fall in the book sales market, in my personal opinion, is that manyJapanese books are heavier than those of Western nations in general (To be cont’d to probably Messge 108)

Takashi Yuasa (takashiyuasainternationallawyer) | 102 comments Based on my Message 93,
Superinterviewer Emma goes like:
Bill & Melinda, what is the latest challenge your distinguished Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation launching? Would you also explain your new Grand challenge entitled:
Putting Moen and Girls at the Center of Development and When did you start it?

http://gcgh.grandchallenges.org/chall...

Geographically speaking, what kind of countries or area are we talking about?
Why would you have a strong feeling that this approach extremely effective?
Superinterviewer Emma goes like:
Bill, are you confident in making new infrastructure for connecting said kids/students in said countries with the best teachers in the world as economically cheap as possible?
Can we make every kid/student own each gadget in said country for education purpose? What would be the economically cheapest gadget… I guess cell phones? Such cell phone needs to contain translation application software for said kids/studnts, right? How translation technology goes? Is technology of translation being improved? Bill, how long would it take before such translation improvements be achieved?Bill, can we make said cell phones as economically as cheap as possible? ………
Mr President, Achieving Gender Equality will mean much more international competitiveness of USA? Also greater US economy? Also more income for the US people? Also More jobs for the US people? For not only women but also men?
Warren, to what are said hedge fund guys willing to listen? Only to the voices of the markets? Wouldn’t said hedge fund people listen to the voices of the US society for Gender Equality? How about the voices from the US Government? Well, said hedge fund people may be outside of the US very often? Okay, that sounds irritating.
Superinterviewer Emma goes like:
Still, do said hedge fund guys listen most carefully to the voices of the market, correct? Then, Warren, my idea is: Let’s have the Stock Exchangein of each country encourage all the market participants to achieve more and more Gender Equality in employment/management!! Warren, would you agree to my idea? In other words, can we encourage the Stock Exchanges and the other Exchanges throughout the world to strongly encourage all the market participants, including hedge funds, to achieve Gender Equality in employment/management ,,right?
Warren, would you please cooperate with me in my new project of encouraging the world’s stock exchanges to encourage the market participants to achieve Gender Equality? Okay, Warren? That’s a deal!!
That’s superinterviewer Emma!! Greatest thanks!!

Takashi Yuasa (takashiyuasainternationallawyer) | 102 comments In general, Japanese paperbacks are smaller than those of Western ones but the weght is basically the same. The Japanese books other than papaerbacks are much heavier than those Western. Before PCs or IT gadgets were born, people could carry said heavy books with them because they're fond of reading.
But now many people have a couple of gadgets plus a PC with them, which makes them feel reluctant to carry heavy books as well.

Hey, Takashi! Morning from the other part of the world.

Seeing as I have always had a lifelong fascination with your country and its culture, it only feels right that I educate myself a little bit on the feminist movement in Japan. I found this article on Japan Times extremely interesting. It starts from the birth of the movement known as ūman libu (women's lib) and then follows four Japanese women trying to discover what the future might hold for them and many others in Japan. I would love to know your thoughts on this, as a Japanese citizen yourself. Also, it would be a nice break from your scheduled series on Emma's book and interviews, don't you think so? ありがとうございます!

Takashi Yuasa (takashiyuasainternationallawyer) | 102 comments I have no doubt my late mother had been a femisint even before 1970.
She had been surely the best educational counselor ever and a woman entrepreneur for long, long years since then.
I'll certainly find te time to read the article, though.

Takashi Yuasa (takashiyuasainternationallawyer) | 102 comments I would like Emma to someday show us many countries and many people therein have shared the common problems, i.e., Gender Gap in employment, because she is super-interviewer proven as such in Davos and because no one else could achieve it so well!!

message 110: by Hildaguard (new)

Hildaguard Houdini I would love for Emma Watson to write a book, I believe it would become very popular and the message spread internationally. It would be great to read a book written by one of my idols.

Λίζα (lisa-and-her-dark-paradise) | 10 comments I'm sure that Emma will write a memoir some day. Whether it will be about her Harry Potter journey or her HeForShe experiences, she has a very interesting story and some passionate ideas to share.

Takashi Yuasa (takashiyuasainternationallawyer) | 102 comments Since this awesome Our Shared Shelf is about reading, I would like to disclose my late mother Choko's experiences and share it with you. She had been not only an entrepreneur but also the best educational counsellor,
who continuously helped out girls & boys suffered from bullying for nearly a half century in Japan. In general, the bullying has been more terrible in Japan than in USA. The reason I remember Mother's activities to help them out was because I sometimes stopped the bullboys from bullying them as a little older student to cooperate with my mother. Of course, I've been a dancer & singer as hobbies , never a karate kid at all.
During these process, my mother had read many American educational psychology books. Therein Mother find lots of lots of interviewing questions and hypothetical answers. My mother said to me then: This would not work at all in Japan, because the bullied girls C boys are so shy and exhausted they woud say nothing to these interviewer's questions. A interviewer & educational counsellor needs to encourage them at the same time. Mother said American method as well as German method then tried to find the weak points of bullied and apply certain curing method to the weak or damaged part of the bullied's mind. My mother's method was completely innovative. My mother wanted to energize the entire power of the bullied by encouraging them. By doing so, the bullied would naturally cure their damaged mind due to said terrible bullying in Japan. At the same time, my mother and I thought that even in the US, my mother's own method would be quite effective.
What a great coincidence! I found almost the same methodology in Emma's interviewing distinguished business leaders in Davos.
of course, the situation is completely different!!
They are busiest people, having no obligations to disclose their internal matters. Notwithstanding, precisely responding to Emma's encouraging interviewing, they have produced lots of wisdoms for the sake of the Gender Equality and the World!! I'm 100% sure that Emma's future books would further complete Emma's original, one and only encouraging interviewing method and provides for wonderful bases in order to get Gender Equality truly achieved!! My mother's experiences had shown that the concept of reading be much broader than just reading. Based on experiences of reading great books, we can change our actions, which shall be also included by the concept of reading, I believe.
