Okay, Shannon, at your request, Shazam, the tavak: An all-white wolf-cat, native to the Sacred Yarr-Tun mountain, home of the Va-Tor Masters of the planet Narr. It has a long, plumed tail, large black eyes, 40-50 cm in length, 30-40 cm at the shoulder, 4-7 kilos weight. Telepathic, solitary, long-legged predator that barks like a dog and howls like a wolf, but is capable of great cat-like leaps to bring down prey, has fangs both fore and mid jaw, retractable razor-sharp cat-claws on all four feet. On the rarest of occasions, chooses to “adopt” and look after a being of another species. Ferocious when aroused, capable of killing humans but also hopelessly cute, and it knows that.
The telepathic animal has a habit of referring to itself in the third person.
Quote: “It will always protect you and the Terran boy and wishes to always remain with you,” the wolfcat telepathized

Joe Jackson (shoelessauthor) I'll add one other, generally a fan favorite among my readers:

Name: Eryn Olgaryn
Race: Half-brys
Gender: Female
Profession: Assassin
Age: 62
Height: 4'10"
Weight: 107#
Quote: "Don't be afraid to cry or be weak; just work to make sure what makes you cry or makes you weak also makes you stronger in the end."

Among the highest-ranked assassins in the guild known as the Blood Order, Eryn Olgaryn is one of the deadliest killers for hire in the known world. Her ruthlessness and cunning are only magnified by her half-demon traits, which include incredible agility, hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and an innate mastery of the bow. Oddly, though she is generally cold and her sense of humor is wicked and blunt, Eryn does, at times, display a kind streak and a soft side, particularly around children and the young.

We are adding Fan Favourites now!? Yeah, I can do that.

Name: Roodg
Race: ????
Gender: ????
Class: Magic Mage (Blaster Style)
Colour: Red
Quote: “bOOBS ARE RAD!” (and one round later) "cOCKS ROCK!"

Her face is always draped in shadow... or is it his face? The long and flowing spellcaster’s robe, full cowl, and undefined body structure makes it so no one is able to tell what exactly Roodg is, is she a girl, is he a boy, an elf, a human, a stick figure, or... well, no matter what they are, they are definitely a Roodg!

The constant screaming in caps lock isn’t making it easier either Roodg! Come on, the key is right there!

~ I actually have a long standing contest involving Roodg. If anyone can tell me what Roodg is (before Roodg does), I will bake them a cake. (I haven't baked any cakes yet)

Micah Sisk (micahrsisk) | 1042 comments Main Character from the title novella in The Cut-Up Man: And other Posthuman Cycle stories.

Name: Nondisclosed
Aliases: Mister Hansson, Inspector Hansson, P.S. Bardens
Posthuman Bloc: Heads
Occupation: Assassin
Occupational Status: TBD
Physical Description (permanent): A human head/neck with grafted on OxiNutriSac
Physical Description (body—temporary): Humanoid, minty blue-green Programmable Bio-Matter
Physical Augmentation (for current job): Prosoponplasty (face-grafting)—two articulating Antman antenna on forehead, flesh colored synthetic skin covering both hands to hide their minty blue-green tint.
Favorite Expletive: “Fukinell!”
Pet Peeve: Antmen. Heads really don't like Antmen.

Hansson is a Head. An assassin. That means physically he’s nothing more than a ... head (biologically speaking). Obviously he works for Head Council. But Head Council hasn’t given him a contract for almost a decade. They say it’s just a sign of the times: nonviolent eras come at a cost. Contracts are hard to come by. Hansson knows better. His last contract didn’t exactly leave him in good standing with Head Council. This new contract is his chance to redeem himself, get back into the fold. Problem is, the space station he's come to is under martial law, his mission handler has gone AWOL, and he has no clue who he's supposed to kill.

But why did he become a Head? I mean, no one’s born a Head. You have to choose that way of life. And you have to be pretty f-d up to do so. So why did he become a Head?

When asked, Hansson had this to say: “I like the ambiguity. I’m on no one’s side. I have a contract to do, I do it. Doesn’t matter who it is. I get it done. Simple. That’s all I need.”

Sources are hard to come by, but there may be a bit more to it than that.

In the posthuman world, being just a head is no big deal. It's just one more lifestyle choice the hip, modern, now-a-go-go transhuman can make.

Jens Lyon | 47 comments Here is one of the characters from my children's play, Time Trip: A Dinosaur Musical.

Name: Crocley
Race: Crocodile
Gender: Unspecified; none of the roles in this play are gender-specific
Birthdate: Before the year 2121, but probably no earlier than 2100.
Color: Green
Class: Lone resident crocodile at the International Science Center's Department Of Endangered Reptiles.
Quote: "I just wanted to see what was out there."

Someone accidentally left Crocley's door open. Curious, Crocley decides to take a look at the outside world. At the same moment, a team of scientists are preparing their time machine for a trip back to the Cretaceous period. Crocley sneaks into a back compartment and is transported to a strange place filled with creatures called dinosaurs...

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments I guess I'll introduce a character too. This thread is too much fun.

Name: Lutnalind Zhendar Xavelk (LX)
Race: Xhartan
Gender: Male
Class: Navigator
Eye color: Changes with his mood from silver to black and everything in between.
Height: Short for a Xhartan, only 6'2"
Quote: "Is that another idiom?"
Book: The Legacy Series.

Description: LX comes from a peaceful planet; however, he's not entirely like them. Sometimes his emotions scare him. Anger, fear, and even jealousy should not be part of his life. Yet, sometimes they haunt him.
He has a special talent learning new languages but on Earth, he struggles with idioms and contractions. They are not his friends. Why would a pizza taste better when it's all dressed? Wouldn't one choke on the clothing? How could people be left in the dark if the sun is shining?

Name: Emaleen (Andarsan) Barsan
Gender: Female
Age: 11
Race: Human (Seer)
Profession: Student
Hobbies: Exploring the creek behind her house for treasure, and the woods and lake surrounding her home in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York.
Description: Pale skinned with brown hair and light colored eyes that change colors.
Quote: "I suppose I will have to see for myself."
Characteristics: A gifted student who doesn't put all of her effort and focus into her work at the start of the book because so many things come easy to her. She learns, however, that she has special magic powers and that she must train hard, focus and put of herself into her studies so that she can reach her full potential of power.

Missy Sheldrake (missysheldrake) | 252 comments I love this thread! Please allow me to introduce Flit, from Call of Kythshire:

Name: Flit (Felicity Lumine Instacia Tenacity)
Rank: 4 names (in Book One of the series)
Race: Light Fae
Gender: Female
Class: Traveler
Color: Pale, with points of light that seep from her pores. One ponytail for each color of the rainbow.
Quote: "Typical!"

Description:
Flit is a fairy from Kythshire who has volunteered to make contact with the human allies of the fae in Cerion to seek their help with the encroaching threat of Sorcery. Being a fairy, she is rather untrusting of humans, especially Mages. She befriends Azi, a swordswoman, and delights in tormenting and teasing Azi's best friend Rian, a Mage. She considers herself and all fae superior to humans, but she tolerates them because if nothing else, they're an excellent source of sweets, and good for a laugh.

Micah Sisk (micahrsisk) | 1042 comments Main Character from PleshaCore.

Name: Captain Pierre Jacobs (maybe), aka Mrs. Magdalene Benson
Occupation: Captain of Merchant Corps rigger TH-2401 (maybe)
Physical Description: Female clone, thin, young, curvy figure, brown hair, brown eyes (basically a 13 year-old’s ideal of a sexy brunette).
Sexual Identity: Lesbian
Gender Identity: Male ... no, Female ... no, Male ... Hmm
Most Hated Promotional Slogan: "Let PleshaCore be the core of your pleasure!"

Captain Pierre Jacobs (if that is indeed his/her name) is ... confused.

See, she woke up yesterday in a reintegration clinic on the pleasure planet PleshaCore convinced that her real self is male. But after spending her honeymoon night with Janine Benson (her ship’s first officer and psychologist-appointed spouse while on PleshaCore), Jacobs’s gender identity switched to female. Just as well, since the cloned body she was put into is unequivocally female; it’s one of PleshaCore’s standard issue “knockouts,” rapidly grown bio-engineered bodies with blank minds.

Even more confusing: Jacobs (renamed Magdalene because of her female body), Janine, and their entire crew of over fourteen hundred people have been granted a full month of R&R, paid for by Terra Corporation, the company/planet that hired their ship. Why is that confusing? Terra Corporation (formerly called Earth) is a theocratic plutocracy and PleshaCore stands for everything Terra Corporation preaches against. It’s the Captain’s job to find out why Terra Corporation has paid for this rare pleasure.

The real kicker is ... Captain Jacobs, Magdalene Benson, or whoever he/she is can’t remember a thing. Total amnesia. Sure, the reintegration clinic prescribed pills to correct the issue (an error in this knockout’s neural pathways) but the pills haven’t worked. And ...

Wait ... Who’s that yelling? What are they saying? They’re the real Captain Jacobs? What does that even mean?

[Sound of gunshots]

OMG, f-that! Just run!

Alright, alright, stop pulling my arm.
I'm too technical, so it's hard to come up with a decent character intro without it sounding like a datasheet. But Imma give it a shot... Here's the MC's from the 3 series I got going at the moment...

Name: James Russell
Age/Gender: 25, Male
Occupation: Clerk 2 at Parson and Parker Corporation, Worldwide Shipping and Receiving (Dept. 387, Clerical Division, Employee #JR703)
Legal Status: American citizen with no criminal record (yet)
Height/Weight: 6'0, 180
Hair/Eye Color: Blond shag/Blue
Skills: Computer Programming
SIGNET acquired: Luminis Signet (appears as a solar cross tattoo)
Element: Fire
Abilities: Flight, Throws flaming spheres
Quote: "I didn't ask for this damn thing!"
Series: SIGNET
Description: Admitted slacker (all about making paper and bagging foxy chicks) and though he's smart, he's prone to making stupid decisions especially by thinking with his pants. He works for The Man at a soul-destroying job that has a high turnover rate due to suicide. The Fates dealt him a cruel hand - he's now owner of a powerful alien weapon and. While James desperately tries to unload the SIGNET on some new unsuspecting sucker, the dude can't catch a break with alien assassins always on his back.

Name: Chaka Isawa
Age/Gender: 25, Male
Class/Rank: Clan Champion/Lieutenant
Clan: House Suzume
Legal Status: wanted for several crimes - murder of the daimyo's personal physician, escaping prison and avoiding the death penalty
Height/Weight: 5'11, 180
Hair/Eye Color: long, wavy ashen blond/gray (glows blue while possessed)
Primary Abilites/Elemental Affinity: Swordsman (longswords such as katana, uchigatana and tachi)/Light and Thunder (Fire while possessed)
Quote: "I don't hate you, but if I have to, I will."
Series: Devil Hunter Isawa Chronicles
Description: Strong, somewhat arrogant, and exceptionally violent, Chaka finds himself in dire situations due being stubborn and making stupid decisions. He has an unusual fear of ghosts and appears complex to everyone else around him since he keeps his distance, though he can be easygoing as he opens up more. One would think as a devil slayer he wouldn't let himself get possessed, especially by a high-ranking Lieutenant of the Devil King's armies, but if doing evil things will accomplish personal goals faster, sometimes ish has to hit the fan before the ball gets rolling.

Name: Erik Hart
Age/Gender: (depends on flashback, currently 32)/Male
Occupation: (dependent on assignment) Primarily works as an agent for INTERTEC, a group of hardcore concietentious objecters oppsoing the government-sponsored program CENTRA (Cybernetically Enhanced Neurotechnological Replicant Application).
Legal Status: wanted by the Feds for terrorism and escaping capture by Public Security (local police)
Height/Weight: 5'11, 140
Hair/Eye Color: shaggy red/violet (has 3 scars, down his right eye, across his nose and on his left cheek, as well as freckles across the nose and cheeks)
Skills/Abilites: Sword fighting (sabre), mouthing off/has an uncanny recall ability if data is read, can program in any language.
Quote: "I don't give a damn what you think - I'm just a stupid junkie."
Series: The Agency
Description: Has an admitted narcotic and alcohol problem and prone to psychotic breaks, but that doesn't deter Erik from trying to end his life every chance he gets - however, obligations keep getting in his way. Erik has many problems, namely making stupid decisions (I notice a pattern here) and getting snarky with those in positions of power. However, he's fiercely loyal to his close circle of friends and isn't a fan of fighting, but will throw dem bows if need be.
If Erik isn't being used by others for his skills (as they supply him with drugs to get him to do what they want that he's usually in opposition with), he's captured (again) and forced into 'reprogramming' in an attempt to gather information that only he knows, otherwise he can be found dulling his feelings (and suppressing his memory) while finishing jobs like breaking Synthoids (a type of Combat Android) to reach his ultimate goal.

Adopted at birth she doesn't know definitively who her parents are, but she suspects Charley (from Regeneration X) is her mother. M. Ray Holloway Jr. (mrayhollowayjr) | 180 comments From my short story, "The Empath".
Name: James, the empath.
Race: Human, gifted
Gender: Male
Profession: Healer
Age: Mid-twenties
Quote:
"You love me?" I asked, already knowing the truth. His scowl deepened as he stood.

"Why should I give a damn about you?" he said, stomping toward the door. He stopped, head down with his back to me, balling his fists as he tried to fight off the anger. He looked back over his shoulder at me sorrowfully, but neither of us had to say a word.

This short story was written thirty years ago and is actually a prequel for a series that I am working on. James is an empath from a long line of empaths that date back to the time of Christ. His healing abilities have been handed down for centuries and allow him to take upon himself the emotional disturbances of those he comes in contact with. Limited in how much pain he can accept, he has to let himself be "purged" after a while...

Andrew (whatmatters) | 124 comments C.B. nice thread - learn a bit more about authors through their characters.

I’m familiar with some of these characters with more yet to explore. I’m smiling, thinking of a parody with a cross novel mix of characters, but I’ll save that for another day.

Andrew (whatmatters) | 124 comments Title: “The Mind Game Company - The Players”

Name: Marcie
Gender: Female
Character type: Savvy mind game player.
Age: NA. MC captive Danny, assumes she’s somewhere in her 30's or 40's.
Attributes: Telepathic stalker - devious and mischievous - adept role player and fabricator - intentionally ambiguous - amusing and often playfully seductive.
Marcie quote: “I am not an enigma or a paradox. Marcie is a paradigm shape-shifter. We do not change shape, we alter the shape of your reality.”

Since the story is all about discovery, this is what I’ll do to avoid a spoiler. Following the Prologue is the intro from Chapter One page 1.

The only thing I knew about them, was that they were able to read my mind with amazing clarity, watching every movement and describing it in detail for affect. I started with an empty canvas trying to form a picture of who they were, what they were doing, and conceptualize how they were doing it. Somehow they were connected to me, doing things which are not known to be possible.
They would later call themselves “The Mind Game Company”.
“You don’t know what we found out about you?” Then they would give me a moment to consider the possibilities reading my reactions. Followed with a type of cheeky candy-coated taunting. “You don’t even know what kind of people we are or what we’re going to do with your information.”
So adept at rattling my nerves and never able to face my accusers. I called them many names, because they had many faces, though the most appropriate was parasites, mind stalking parasites.
Every day new technology is being developed. What never existed and seemed impossible is now common place. In fact everything with science and technology is growing at an accelerated rate.
It’s been over 3 years since my first encounter with the Mind Game Company. Programs, countless programs bundled as mind games. Although the atmosphere has changed to something more compatible, it remains guarded with reoccurring suspicions and unresolved conflicts. My name is Danny and I’m laying in bed, coming to life.

I have never introduced a Character through stats like this in a story, but it really does sound like a fantastic idea if done correctly.

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Just to be weird, here's the MC of a story I won't be writing under my own name. Not that I'm revealing any big secret, but this is going to be a rather adult scifi and it just seems prudent to use a name not associated with my YA and tamer works.

Name: Narissa Fox
Occupation: NRP, which officially stands for Nav Recon Pilot, but unofficially stands for No Return Plotted
Status: Rehabilitated criminal/mistake the government wants to make disappear
Description: Born a plain Jane, but given genetic enhancements and surgeries as part of occupational rehab in order to be shipped off to a federally regulated brothel. Mistakes happen and she's sent to a penal colony for criminal geniuses, where her enhancements and implants methodically destroyed and removed by a sick doctor for his own pleasure. What's left is a skeltal and scarred waste that looks more like a creature of nightmares.
Quote: I am not high enough to think about this right now.

A small time drug addict turned pilot, Narissa is sent on a mission that is supposed to strand her and her ship on the far side of the galaxy, saving the goverment the headache of correcting the many mistakes made in handling her arrest. Except instead of dying in space, she finds a secret base of former prisoners intent on forming a rebellion.

No name or release date is scheduled yet. Sorry. ;p

'Weird' huh? Sounds like a great idea, and a great character Christina! I can also do weird. (You knew that, but still)

Here is a main character to a completely different fictional franchise than my book (but I still made up).

Name: Ni Hao Bunny©
Gender: Female
Occupation: Bunny/Main character of Ni Hao Bunny & Friends/Racecar driver
Race: Two-Dimensional Cartoon Bunny
Powers: Sickeningly cute, Speaks Russian, Has a dimensional purse that can fit anything
Quote: Ni Hao Bunny© doesn't say anything.

Description: A character from a completely unrelated franchise who is a parody of Hello Kitty, Ni Hao Bunny© is referenced occasionally by characters as something that does exist in the real world. Mostly they use her when something is far too cute for it's own good, but she has also been used to explain what dimensional transcendence is, and as 'the last straw' breaking moment for a tragic character's arc.

When I give out or sell physical copies of my book in person it comes with a Ni Hao Bunny© bookmark. (much to everyone's confusion)
