I read this probably about 10 years ago.
From what I can remember there are 3 books. Adult. Hard cover.

It starts with a witch giving the main character this power, just before she dies. Whenever someone tries to kill him, they switch bodies and the killer dies instead. It doesn't work if he tries to get someone to kill him. At one point he switches with a female assassin and later with some tyrant he was trying to defeat.
