Buddy Read? Requests here!
Cool that you guys want to join! I'm really looking forward to it.@Cynda, do you mean The Bevington Shakespeare? That one's been on my wishlist for so long, but it's really expensive. Bevington was a great scholar.
@John I'm actually now writing my thesis on Richard II and The Hollow Crown. Yes, they are direct adaptations of the play, really well done (I've only seen the first three so far), but Ben Wishaw as Richard II is something else!
Minnie I buy used books to do a tiny thing for Earth and to bring my costs sometimes way down. I bought this copy at local used bookstore on a day when they had a 20% off sale. To the used bookstore, I say: Open Open Open.I had a Riverside way back when I was at uni, but book mold got in it. And now I prefer Bevington. So okay, I accept.
Yes, I've heard that the older editions (I think the most recent one is #4) can be had for as little as 10€/$/etc., which is a significant difference from the original 100€. I buy my used books via a dedicated web shop and have notifications set up for a couple of ISBNs, unfortunately none of the compelete works of the Bard that I've narrowed my search on are on sale at the moment. Riverside is on that list as well, but I think I'll go with the 2nd edition of the Norton Shakespeare, because they finally parted from the awful texts as edited by Oxford, and they include a code for the electronic supplements (audiovisual material, etc.).I'd love to just go browsing through market stalls like in the movies, but a) I don't have the patience and b) I now buy my books for life and am consequently extremely picky about the specific edition of a work (especially with classics that need a lot of apparatus) and the condition of the book.
Funny! I'm actually reading it as well, but not enjoying it. He mines Shakespeare's sparse biography way deeper than it can support his theories, or perhaps I just can't suspend my scepticism and disbelief enough to just enjoy the ride. In any case, I'm stuck around half-way and try to read a chapter a day, but it's more of a completionist task now than a real pleasure read.
I'd love to! Weirdly I haven't read it yet, but the "group therapy at Wuthering Heights" scenes from the Thursday Next series seem very promising!
We have already read Wuthering Heights as a group. Use this thread for your buddy read and just continue on with the conversation.

Sorry, we use the old threads for existing books. There is also a non spoiler thread for the book that you can use: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Okay, I'll throw out the question. It seems a few of us have Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz
in our May reading plans.
Is there interest in a buddy read? I've just started it and think it's going to be a good one.
okay I found the right thread now, Is anyone interested in a May buddy read of Olive Kitteridge for May? Brina and I scheduled it at the beginning of the year and I think Kathleen may have been interested (but maybe not now with Palace Walk)I have to start it by today or tomorrow because It's due back to the library in 5 days.

If I can find the book, I'll join. Such a good one!

Palace Walk you say... hmmm... I'll have to think about it...
wait
yes! ;o)
Sue - I’m in for Olive Kitteredge. I have time before I have to return the book I’m reading now, so I’ll slide it in ahead. Is there a thread does anyone know ?
Great Brenda. I'm starting it tomorrow. I figured out how to create the thread. It's here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I've aded both of these to the buddy read schedule with links to the discussion threads :)
Wish I could join into Palace Walk. I looked and there’s no inexpensive copies. If anyone has any leads, let me know.
Brina wrote: "Wish I could join into Palace Walk. I looked and there’s no inexpensive copies. If anyone has any leads, let me know."I wish I did, Brina. I happened to have picked up a copy at a library sale pre-virus. I'm sorry you can't join--I've been missing out on group reads for the same reason, so understand your frustration.
Hey Brina,I don't know where you live and if this site charges shipping, but I found a used copy for $ 3.99:
https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/palace-...
I buy used books all the time when I don't go for the audio or ebook.
Wow, thank you much. I’ll look later. I have a list of books to get just based on a few groups reads for the next few months. Looking forward to this one.
I've also (just now) found this page called "bookfinder" which shows a price comparison for many sites. https://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac...
Anybody interested in reading Beartown?Brenda, Brina and me have just decided to go for it and would start very soon.
Alexw wrote: "I would be very interested In buddy reading Beartown-please include me."Me too!! That's the first book, right?
I'll be reading some variation of Poe's complete works in the near future. If people are interested in joining me, I can wait up until June to start, maybe even July if I'm wildly underestimating my remaining challenge reading cumulative page count. I'm sure this group already has a board for it somewhere, so I'll track that down when it becomes necessary to do so.

Yes, it’s the first book.
I‘ve already created an extra thread.
After I suggested The Gaucho Martín Fierro for the old-school nominations for June, Brina suggested to read it as a Buddy read if it doesn't win - which it didn't. I saw her message too late to respond to her in the same thread, so I'm doing it here now and throw the question out to everybody:Who would be interested in a buddy read of The Gaucho Martín Fierro ?
I'll read it for O2: Classic Western of the BINGO challenge this year.
If I can read for free online, sure. It’s not too long, about my limit for ebooks. I’ve given up on challenges when the libraries closed but I still want to read this.
I found the same one. I’m sure I read in college so I’ll have to read a Spanish version too. I might read at the end of May just so I can have time for both English and Spanish.
Petra had mentioned (message 1627) a buddy read of No Name by Wilkie Collins and got several responses of "yes" with a tentative May reading date. I was wondering if I had missed that or whether it was still in the works.
Thanks Petrichor. Please count me in.That's my thought too Brina. I was looking for bilingual edition even if I had to pay a bit more. No Luck. I will read online. I will enjoy better if I can read in Spanish, so I will try that first. The last week of May is good. June even better. But either way.
I am still in for No Name. I dropped it because I couldn’t concentrate on big books, I will definitely continue if a buddy read is arranged.
Anone interested in reading & discussing Matigari by by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o in a few weeks? It's on the short side, about 150 pages. I enjoyed his The River Between. The kindle is $6.
Sara wrote: "Petra had mentioned (message 1627) a buddy read of No Name by Wilkie Collins and got several responses of "yes" with a tentative May reading date. I was wondering if I ha..."I will join in as well. The first week of June sounds good.
Sara wrote: "Great! I will set up a thread. Pink, could you add it to the schedule? Thanks."I’ll add it now!
Edit, just to say I can't find a thread for it yet, so I'll create that too :)
Sorry about dropping the ball on the No Name buddy read in May. Time got away from me. Thank you for bringing this up again and setting up a start date. I'll be ready for a June start.
Looking forward to it. Wilkie Collins writes a good story.
No problem, Petra. May would have been impossible for me, so I'm glad it got pushed out a little. Looking forward to reading with everyone.
Petrichor, I’m going to plan for June 1 and set up a thread for Martin Fierro. Also looking and planning for buddy reads of these books in July if they don’t win the polls:

John the Hollow Crown episodes are productions of the Shakespearan plays. So you have a good start there.
