I'd like to join in for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn; I've been meaning to read it for awhile! And next week is great since that's when I get back from vacation (and the pile of books in my room) :)

I would also be interested in the buddy read for A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I actually just bought it, so next week is perfect!
I will be starting One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in about a week. If someone want to join reading that would be great. I will be reading it now in any case, as I just got the Danish translation from an interlibrary loan.

Looking forward, Francisca and Emily. Glad you are joining in. I'm starting Monday but everyone feel free to read at their own pace.
J_BlueFlower wrote: "Started One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich today"superb book - I read it a little while ago, and would recommend anybody who has it sitting unread on their shelf to read it NOW!
Brina wrote: "Planning on reading it later this week so hopefully our schedules coincide."I may join as well, depending on how the next week goes! If you're still reading at a lightening pace, I'll probably finish long after you... ;-)
Is there still a Midnight's Children group later this month? I would like to join if it's still going on.
Hey, is anyone still reading Madame Bovary? I am getting close to finishing and just added a comment to the non-spoiler discussion thread. I'd love to talk about it if anyone else was doing the buddy read!Discussions here
Holly wrote: "Would anyone be interested in reading The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway with me?"Maybe, I do want to read them, but there are an awful lot and I'm bad at buddy reading at the moment. What timescale are you thinking of reading them?
I'll take a look for a second hand copy of his short stories, but I'd probably only dip in and out of them. If you go ahead with a buddy read, I might join when I can.
I wish I could lend my physical copies of books to ppl- As an English teacher, and holder of an English degree, AND having worked at a bookstore with a huge discount, I have an INSANE book collection! (REAL books, though. Heavy hardcovers and such.) --Jen from Quebec :0)
I wish I could borrow them too! Luckily my library provides for most of my wants, though sometimes I prefer to have my own copies of favourite authors.
J_BlueFlower wrote: "Started One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich today"I read it ages ago, back in school. And it has been ever since one of the most powerful things I ever read. It is beautifully written.
I would also recommend Cancer Ward, which is my absolute favourite.
Ali wrote: "I would also recommend Cancer Ward, which is my absolute favourite. "That and The First Circle is on my to-read list. 1001-books group is starting a group read of Cancer Ward today.
La Petite Princess and I are starting One Hundred Years of Solitude today if anyone else is interested.
A group of us is interested in reading The Vindication of Rights of Women during the first half of September. When you can please add to the schedule.
Brina wrote: "A group of us is interested in reading The Vindication of Rights of Women during the first half of September. When you can please add to the schedule."Will do :)
Bat-Cat wrote: "Starting W & P in October would also be fine with me. Are there some more takers?"Yes, I need buddy for War and Peace. In October I have no other buddy read committments, so Yes I will be brave and W&P.
Pink wrote: "Is there a classic book that you'd like to buddy read? If you're interested in reading a specific book, outside of the group reads, then here's the place to post and find a buddy!"
Hello Pink. Kt and I are wanting to buddy read
1. Nicholas Nickleby
2. Don Quixote
Kt and I will be reading all the books of Don Q, but of anyonenjust wants to read the usual first 2 books, please join the convo for that as well.
Question Pink: Is it okay with the group rulesm ways of doing things, that we have 2 buddy reads in the same month. We are thinking of reading NicholasN first before DonQ. This okay?
Thanks Pink for your help here.
Cynda wrote: "Kt and I will be reading all the books of Don Q, but of anyonenjust wants to read the usual first 2 books, please join the convo for that as well. ..."Isn't there only 2? Both usually published together in one volume?
Hi Cynda, you can have as many buddy reads as you and your buddy have time for! I didn't know Don Quixote had more than two books either?!
Here's a link for the previous group read discussions. https://www.goodreads.com/group/comme... They're broken up into parts 1 and 2, with a general non spoiler thread and discussions about translations as well. You can continue to use these threads for your buddy read.
Nicholas Nickleby hasn't been a group read before, so will need a discussion thread created when you're ready. You can do this yourself, or I can do it for you.
If you let me know what month you're planning on reading these two books I'll add them to the buddy read schedule. I'll wait and see if you have any other takers for War and Peace in October, but there's plenty of time yet :)
Melanti wrote: "Isn't there only 2?"Is she referring to fan fiction?
I'm having a great time over here imagining what a third book might include. A time travel adventure with Ignatius Jacques Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces? A gonzo journalism take on the Spanish prison system titled "Fear and Loathing in Debtor's Prison?" A Fahrenheit 451 dystopia where he has to battle the Firemen who want to burn his books? The possibilities are endless, and I haven't even got to my TNG holodeck ideas.
A Twain remix? A Connecticut Yankee in Don Quixote's Court? Actually, I remember someone nominating The Female Quixote, so perhaps that's what Cynda's referring to. If so, that sounds like a fun one to read.
Cynda, we're dying of curiosity over here!

Sorry not today. Though on another day perhaps...
Kt and I want to read Don Q by Cervantes and Nicholas Nickleby.

Thanks Pink. The old thread is good for Don Quixote. And yes, we will need a discussiion thread for Nicholas Nickleby Would you set that thread up for August? I am still learning basics.
I will look into how many books Don Q has. I always thought 2. I have read 2 long ago. But I came across something recently that said 5 books. My new-to-me copy has 5 sections. Who knows? More will be revealed 👀
Oh! Book 1 has 4 parts and book 2 has 1 part, so all together, that's 5 parts. I remember that causing some confusion in the group read! Perhaps your edition/translation just names them parts 1-5?
Melanti wrote: "Cynda wrote: "Kt and I will be reading all the books of Don Q, but of anyonenjust wants to read the usual first 2 books, please join the convo for that as well. ..."Isn't there only 2? Both usual..."
I just douuunt know. I am confused. Somewhere I was reading that it has 5 parts total, that most people just read 2parts, the hest parts. The other parts are not as good. My new-to-me cooy is part of a Harvard Series, I believe, and has have section of chapters. I am not at my apartment right now or I would check. I am housesitting until Tuesday afternoon.
Brina wrote: "A group of us is interested in reading The Vindication of Rights of Women during the first half of September. When you can please add to the schedule."September will be here in a just a few days. Who is in for A Vindication of the Rights of Woman?
Feeling a little September studiousness? My copy is full of footnotes and supporting essays, but the text itself isn't that long. Join us--it should be fun!
woo hoo! I will start reading on Friday. Studying for a certification exam for work - it's on Thursday. :( I hate worrying my pretty little head about such things.
It's back to school/work for us this week and I'm doing some light reading first as I get used to my schedule before jumping into this.

I'm down for starting War and Peace in November! I don't think I'll be able to get to it until then.
