Tristram Shandy Dear Fellow-Pickwickians,

the poll may not have finished yet but Everman's idea of reading Martin Chuzzlewit according to the instalments the novel appeared in has convinced most, if not all, of the active members, even those who make it a point of honour never to be convinced by grumpy people at all.

This will lead to the following reading schedule:

05/01 - 05/07: I, Chapters 1 - 3
05/08 - 05/14: II, Chapters 4 - 5
05/15 - 05/21: III, Chapters 6 - 8
05/22 - 05/28: IV, Chapters 9 - 10
05/29 - 06/04: V, Chapters 11 - 12
06/05 - 06/11: VI, Chapters 13 - 15
06/12 - 06/18: VII, Chapters 16 - 17
06/19 - 06/25: VIII, Chapters 18 - 20
06/26 - 07/03: IX, Chapters 21 - 23
07/04 - 07/09: X, Chapters 24 - 26
07/10 - 07/16: XI, Chapters 27 - 29
07/17 - 07/23: XII, Chapters 30 - 32
07/24 - 07/30: XIII, Chapters 33 - 35
07/31 - 08/06: XIV, Chapters 36 - 38
08/07 - 08/13: XV, Chapters 39 - 41
08/14 - 08/20: XVI, Chapters 42 - 44
08/21 - 08/27: XVII, Chapters 45 - 47
08/28 - 09/03: XVIII, Chapters 48 - 50
09/04 - 09/11: XIX, Chapters 51 - 54

I am quite satisfied with this arrangement because I know for sure that Martin Chuzzlewit will make an excellent companion for the summer as it is one of the funniest Dickens novels.

As usual I will open the threads on Sundays, but should you find me remiss in doing so do not hesitate to open the new thread yourselves.

In case you may find any inconsistencies in the above reading schedule, please let me know and I will correct them.

I am very much looking forward to this wonderful novel!!! So much so that I actually indulged in the luxury of three quotation marks, which is a thing I normally associate with puberty.

I just started reading it last night. Not a traditional biography at all, but so far quite interesting and enjoyable.

I am speechless. :-}

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) LOL, Maureen! How about introducing yourself? (And welcome!) :)

Oh, so tempting. So tempting.

But be still, my fingers. Be still.

Maureen (montanamo) | 2 comments Hello, all.
My comment to Everyman was based on the insight and analysis that he provides in his comments. On any online discussion there are comments which are rote and seem to apply to any number of books. There are people who I follow in any number of forums that I value their opinions and reviews
I am retired, read more and hope to read more classics.

Welcome to the club Maureen. You'll find that Everyman is one of my favorite people to pick on (that means that I like him but don't tell him). :-}

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) And there I was, Maureen, thinking you were buying your "Everyman's Library" copies of Dickens' works at Barnes and Noble bookstore... Am I missing something here?

Everyman | 2034 comments When are the moderators going to post the discussion thread for Chapters 1-3, which was to start Thursday? Not that I've finished reading them yet, of course, but I'll have more incentive if the discussion is underway!

As I said in the introductory comment, I'd rather open new threads on the novel on Sundays - as usual. Doing it earlier would probably involve some spoilers for those who are not very far ahead in the week's reading assignment. Actually, I have not even started yet - but I may in a few minutes.

Sorry. I missed that. I was going by the home page which still says that the book starts on May 1st.

Kim Oh, I was so close to being able to once again calling you two grumps!!! :-}

Oh, Kim, there will be plenty of opportunities to call us grumps in the course of our reading experience - even though I like Chuzzlewit much better than Oliver or TOCS.

We actually did start on May 1st, but as with Barnaby I think it is not too good to start the thread on the very first reading day.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Are you going to post copies of the original illustrations for this one? I'm really enjoying them in the Nicholas Nickleby threads, as I did in the Oliver Twist ones too. But I don't remember any from the discussion about Barnaby Rudge.
