Heather Hart (heather_hart) | 2 comments My book is saying it has 5 ratings (2 4-star and the rest added to the "to-read" shelf) but it's displaying at t 3-star rating. Any idea why?

Heather Hart (heather_hart) | 2 comments To make it even more curious, I can see the two four star ratings, but when you click on the rating details section it says I have one 5 star review and one 4 star review...

Aaron (aaronburdette) | 89 comments Hi Heather, as D.C. mentioned, it does take our system cache a few hours to catch up sometimes. It appears that your book is displaying the correct data now.

Helen | 25 comments Why is a rating on my book page persistently listed out of date sequence? My book BLOODSTONE has a 2-star rating from May 5th that always is listed first on the ratings page despite the book having pages of ratings and book additions since that date. why can't it be put in its proper place in the dated list?

Kelly Cozy (kellycozy) My total ratings are out of synch with the number of ratings for each book, and have been for almost a week now. I've tried updating the rating stats on each book several times but the numbers are still out of synch.

Aaron (aaronburdette) | 89 comments Helen, the issue you're describing is one we're aware of. Several book pages display ratings in a largely-unpredictable way, and we currently have someone looking into this.

The same goes for your separate issue, Kelly. Author Dashboard stats are not always lining up with total book page stats, and we have someone looking at that, as well.

Thanks for letting me know about these instances!

It looks like I have had two ratings, both 5 star, but only one review.
Why would anyone just rate?
Having read the book, presumably, perhaps they were lost for words.
I am sure no one takes a rating seriously, if the reader cannot be bothered to give a review. I think that reflects badly on the author of the book.
Does anyone agree?

رمزي الحكمي (ramzimohammedalhakami) | 2 comments Hi, dear John.
Some of them are rating randomly, but the most are serious and interested. Perhaps they are quickly rate the books they read, to achieve more rating processes in little time.

I am Optimistic that they are often rating honestly.

As someone who rates but no longer writes reviews on Goodreads, I strongly disagree about it reflecting badly on the author. Ratings without reviews might not be all that helpful, but I can't see that they are negative just because they don't have a review attached to them.

I rate books for my own reference and for my friends (as well as members of the groups I co-mod) who know me, my taste and what my ratings mean. Those ratings have meaning within that context.

As for why anyone would just rate, my decision to not write reviews here was due to authors being "overly involved" in my reviews. (I should note that the reviews in question were not even negative reviews. Not that it would have excused their behavior, but it was a bit baffling.) When, for other reasons, I closed my account and later came back, I decided to do ratings only to avoid that in the future, so I imported my books from my old account without the reviews attached. This decision has brought more peace into my Goodreads experience.

Sheila Welch (sheilakellywelch) | 2 comments Hi,

As both a reader and an author, I've found that when a book is new, many readers rate it and write a review. As the review list lengthens, more and more people do a rating and no review, probably because it appears that their own thoughts on a particular book have already been expressed. I DO have trouble understanding why some readers simply "add" a book and don't rate and/or review it. I guess they just want to keep a record of what they've read and don't feel the need to mention how they felt about a book. As an author, I find those "addings" rather frustrating, but maybe I should be glad those readers aren't giving my books one-star ratings.
