That's a summary of the main story. The heist is daring, dramatic, and downright crazy, the story is full of suspense, secrets and mysteries, and you dive in and out of the present adventure and the backstories of each of the characters. The story is told in five main POV's. There are also unpredictable twists and turns that you'll never see coming. This book will keep you glued to its pages and obsessed with its amazing world and characters.
Also, if you want to read, here's a summary of the six main characters as well if you still want some more information. The characters are probably the best part of the book.
Kaz
Kaz Brekker is a wily and cunning thief. He is a master lock pick, pickpocket, and of course thief, and he is an absolute genius when it comes to anything to do with heists and criminal activity. Also known as Dirtyhands, Kaz has a reputation for being one of the most feared and rules criminals in the Barrel, someone who will do anything to get what he wants, and never needs a reason for anything. Of course, Kaz always has his reasons. He always carries a Fabrikator made crow's head cane, and is always wearing black leather gloves on his hands. No one (literally no one except a single person) has ever seen him without the gloves, leading to many gruesome rumours as to why. But the real reason is something no one would ever guess. But deep beneath the mask of the notorious criminal and the legend Kaz has built around himself, he is a deep and damaged character haunted by the death of a loved one, trying to relay the debts he believes he owes, and consumed by a burning desire for revenge. Everything Kaz does is because of that dream of vengeance, burning a deep black hole in his heart. Kaz is a legend within the Barrel, despite his age he's done many incredible things and holds much power. He is the floor boss of the Crow Club, he is the youngest to ever run a betting shop and has doubled its profits in that time, and he is everything from a thief, to a blackmailer, con artist, trickster, to a ruthless murderer, and is the favoured lieutenant of Per Haskell, the man in charge of the Dregs. He is merciless and unforgiving, and always ten steps ahead. And now Kaz is given the opportunity to commit the biggest heist in history. No one has ever ransacked the Ice Court and came out alive. The reward, plus what the heist will do for his reputation, will be incredibly helpful for Kaz. But in the adventure Kaz faces more challenges than he could ever expect, and by the end of the book, his journey is just beginning.
Inej
Inej is an amazingly skilled spy. She has incredible acrobat, climbing and close combat skills, as well as the uncanny ability to move around unheard. This gives her the name of the Wraith amongst everyone in the Barrel. She is a thief of secrets, finding out every little bit of information about anything for Kaz. Inej is kind of like the ultimate secret weapon of the Dregs. Inej joined the Dregs only less than two years ago when Kaz bought her contract, freeing her from a pleasure house with a terrible and abusive boss woman. Then she wa ps turned into a spy and killer for the Dregs. But despite everything she endures and has to put up with, Inej still holds onto a scrap of faith, believing her Saints are still watching her. She is very intelligent and sharp with her mind and has quite a way with words. Indeed she has quite an interesting relationship with Kaz, she is the only one he fully trusts and confides a lot of information in. Inej is a priceless member of the crew and absolutely instrumental in the heist. She goes through a massive development and suddenly gains a great purpose during the story. Inej is a truly deep and incredible character.
Jesper
Jesper is also a member of the Dregs, and probably the closest thing to a friend for Kaz who trusts him pretty well. He is a master sharpshooter, the best when it comes to guns and any kind of fight. However he had an addiction to gambling, unable to resist a wager. He's got himself into an astounding amount of debt in many places in the Barrel, and seems to be a person who doesn't think before speaking of acting. Before he came to Ketterdam he was a farm boy, but he came to Kerch to go to some sort of school as his father wanted, but ended getting caught in the Barrel and becoming a thug. Jesper is the absolute jokester in the group. He is downright hilarious, and extremely mischievous, his joking and teasing never ceases. But Jesper also has a very big secret that is revealed in the book. Jesper is extremely loyal and a valuable member of the crew, he is gutsy and will rush madly into anything. You just can't help but love him.
Nina
Now we're getting into the crew members who were not in the Dregs beforehand.
Nina is a Grisha. A Heartrender who used to be part of the Second Army before she came to Kerch. She uses her magic to earn her living in the House of the White Rose, where stressed clients pay her to use her Heartrending powers to calm them down. But she is staying in Kerch for a different reason. For reasons that become clear later Nina has association with Kaz Brekker. He is aware of who she is and her powers and that's how she becomes part of the crew. She joins in when Kaz offers her a favour in return - that still benefits him as well. Nina is very sarcastic and quite a character, she is extremely passionate about her cause and the welfare of her fellow Grisha people. It also turns out that Nina has quite a personal history with Matthias, another member of he crew. The two of them have a very love-hate relationship. Nina is a very important member during the heist and her emotions and feelings take many spiralling turns throughout the story, making her POV really quite interesting.
Matthias
Matthias is probably the toughest, roughest most brawny member of the crew. He was formerly a druskelle, a Fjerdan soldier who hunts down Grisha, but he ended up arrested and thrown in Hellgate prison in a complicated mess involving Nina. Kaz and the crew rescue him from being a convict in the prison and Kaz bribes him with a pardon of his crimes to get him to join the crew and assist in the heist. Kaz feels Matthias is needed because of his knowledge of Fjerda and the Ice Court. Matthias hates being with the criminals at first, not wanting to betray his country but torn by the opportunity of the pardon and the hope of going home and getting back everything he lost. Clearly he hates Nina with a passion at first because of what happened with the both of them, and they're at each other's throats for a good part of the journey. Matthias tries to hold on to the scraps of goodness in him by saying Kaz and the rest of the crew are bad, but soon he comes to realise that he isn't much different, and later, that he has found more important things to fight for. Matthias really changes through the course of the book and comes a real essential member to the crew.
Wylan
Wylan is kind of the outcast out of these outcasts. He is not a criminal, nothing like it. Wylan is he son of Jan Van Eck, the merchant who hires Kaz and the rest of the crew for the dangerous mission to the Ice Court, and thought at first it seems he's only brought along as a sort of hostage to ensure Van Eck keeps his part of the bargain, Wylan actually proves to be very useful with his sketching skills and knowledge of bombs. He also has quite the smarts. Wylan seems uneasy in the company of the rest of the crew of criminals, seeming naive and innocent compared to them, but he really grows and develops during his time with the Dregs. Later it is revealed that Wylan willingly ran away from his home and his father, and it shows there's a lot more to him than he seems. Even though Wylan is the only one of the crew without a POV for some strange reason, he's just as part of it as the rest of them and becomes quite an important player in the game.

The book is set in the same world as the Grisha trilogy, but a different place. It takes place in two main settings, Ketterdam, Kerch and Fjerda.
Ketterdam - a fantasy spinoff of Amsterdam - is a city on the coast of Kerch, a small country. It receives all kinds of international trade, filled with merchants, traders and buyers, and a price can be scored for just about anything.
In Ketterdam, there is a place called the Barrel, and in the Barrel roams the city's toughest, smartest, most dangerous, violent, ruthless and cunning criminals. And criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker is one of them. Kaz is just 17 years old, yet he's one of the smartest, most cunning and dangerous and high profile criminals in the Barrel. He is the lieutenant of the Dregs, one of the many criminal gangs of the Barrel. Before Kaz joined them, the Dregs were a laughingstock, nothing but street kids and washed-up cashiers in a run-down house. But Kaz made them great, he got them their own territory, gambling hall, and made them one of the most feared gangs of the Barrel. Kaz Brekker may be a cripple with a limp and a cane, but he has a reputation for being one of the most ruthless thugs in the Barrel who will do anything to get what he wants. He always has tricks up his sleeve, and he is always ten steps ahead.
One night after a showdown with a rival gang, Kaz is kidnapped by a merchant, but not for any reason he thinks. Instead the merchant hires Kaz to commit the most deadly and impossible heist ever! For a reward that will make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But even Kaz can't do it alone. So he gathers a crew of the most dangerous, diverse, eccentric and funniest misfits ever, to help him break into the supposedly impenetrable Ice Court in Fjerda. All six of these loveable outcasts have a history, a sad story that makes them each who they are. If Kaz and his crew fail this mission, it could mean worldwide destruction. The six crows are the only ones who can do this, and prevent the world from descending into chaos, if they don't kill each other first...
Kaz the Thief.
Inej the Spy.
Jesper the Sharpshooter.
Nina the Heartrender.
Matthias the Convict.
Wylan the Runaway.
