Enjoy the ride man! I personally only read ASOIAF around 3 years ago after A Dance with Dragons was published. The books are great and I found them very compelling. A few scenes even made me want to throw my e-reader down in disgust, a feat only a very few authors could accomplish. It's hard to raise that level of emotion from me as a reader.

 Thanks!
Thanks!I'm sure I will. Ever since I started writing, I haven't given myself much reading time, and I haven't been able to be fully immersed in a fantasy world. It's heavenly.
I've read the first 4, trying to hold off on ADWD until the release date of the next book is announced. I've been trying to space them out since I know it'll be a while for the next 2. I didn't read any of them until just before the TV series started. I just wanted to be sure I had read each book before the corresponding TV season.

Hi, I'm Rick and I'm here to confess that... I've never read ASoIaF. Or Wheel of Time. Are they good?

I just finished the first book. The characters are mesmerizing. I binged on the HBO show recently and finally took the plunge into the books. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I wish I could start it all again, with fresh eyes.
I wish I could start it all again, with fresh eyes.Of course, I'm also looking forward to my next re-read of the series so far, and picking up on those little details I may have missed in previous read-throughs. :)
Enjoy it!

Yeah, I'm always very aware after the fact of how much I wish I could experience the journey again, so I'm really milking this journey.
Mark, I watched season 1 of the show before I read (I knew the ending already anyway), but I'm not gonna watch any more until I've read it all. The show is amazing as well, though. (obviously)
If I understand the timing correctly, GoT's fourth season, which just got started, picks up somewhere near the tail end of the third book. Since I don't have a subscription to HBO, I won't be watching the show, but I'll try to get caught up in the books in time for the next free weekend of HBO with a GoT marathon.

Anyone know if Tom's other show (Cord Killers) has done a "How to watch GoT without cable/satellite or HBO subscription/password (but your shouldn't because it isn't legal)" kind of episode? ;-)
Well, you can watch the first 3 seasons through Amazon but you have to pay per episode or per season, even if you have Prime.

Or borrow someone's dvds.
Don't some libraries carry the dvds? I think my mom said she watched the first season from library dvds.
Don't do the mistake I did and read whole series in a couple of days. Just savour it, because it wil be a looooooooooong wait after.

Oh I am. I couldn't read them fast if I wanted to.

I definitely heard that they want to conclude the whole story in the show before the books are out, and he's fighting against that. But that means the story is out there, somewhere.
I'm pretty sure you can watch the show on Project Free TV. If you do a search for "project free tv", you should be able to find it.

I'm trying to read Game of Thrones, but man, I'm struggling. It's tough for me to read this epic and I haven't even hit the halfway mark on the first book.

The only part that was tough to slog through, for me, was the passage through the Vale, which is a lot of description. Otherwise I think it moves pretty fast

You read the series in a few days?!? Who are you, Superman? It is a wonderful series. I've read the first three. Despite the fact that I chuckled in disbelief that anyone could read the whole series (5 books so far), he's right. I'm taking my time with them. I don't want to have to wait forever for book 6 and even longer for 7. God forbid something should happen to him and the series never finish properly.

I just recently (FINALLY) started Game of Thrones, and I'm about 250 pages in.
I can't even express how much I love the writing. How he manages to give so much information while keeping the scenes so tight and character driven is phenomenal.
And there's so much story implied--past and future. Ridiculous.
This is probably hilarious to those of you who have been reading these for decades? :D
