There are a few things that made me think of this book but just from the trailer only I can't say for 100% sure that they copied this book.
It looks like it could be the other way around. The script for the movie has been around since 2007. Across the Universe was published in 2011.
Either way, I bet the plot twist is the same: Chris Pratt's character woke up Jennifer Lawrence. Gotta be.
From the trailer both characters woke up at the same time and at the end Chris Pratt's character said that they were woken up for a reason
I said the SAME thing to my roommate! Since there are such huge differences it'll be interesting to see what they do with the same initial plot of being woken up on a spaceship that's supposed to travel for years... But I guess I don't think the movie copied the book. For me, the best part was seeing Amy's interactions with the monoethnic citizens, so unless they wake up in the sequel, it seems like it's own story (for better or worse).
was thinking the same thing. seeing so many similarities and even my other half questioned the trailer after me telling him about the book when I first read it
Well, if the twist it's the same in the book (that's the twist in the movie), it's a very big coincience. It seems this author... was 'inspired' by the script of this movie, not the other way around. The script has been around on the internet since 2007.
Glad to see I wasn't the only one that went "hey - wait a second!" Even if the idea has been around for quite some time, I am curious to know if the author of 'ATU' had anything to do with it? There is such a thing as multiple discovery where essentially two (or more) people can discover something simultaneously or at different times without knowledge of the other. So - may not be that someone "stole" the idea - great minds think alike! :D I'm excited to see it.
There are a lot of books and soon to be made made movies. The beginning of The 100 is very similar to Across The Universe, just remember that no one can replace Beth's work.
It sounds like it could be from a book called Caretaker by JosiRussell. I enjoyed the book. No matter what it's based on I'm looking forward to the movie.
AK - I agree with you! It seems very much like "Caretaker" - very very similar!! Based on the trailer, I told my husband- Intead a book last year that is just like this trailer- I loved the book and the second one is really good also!!!
According to Wikipedia's entry - "The Metro described its plot as bearing a resemblance to the EC Comics book 50 Girls 50, first published in August 1953,[15] in which two passengers of a colony spaceship are awoken from hibernation early and fall in love."
I was thinking the exact same thing, But I guess the fact that the plot is similar to these books will be the only reason for me to watch the movie... hope I can find out who woke em up? hahahha
Michelle- Thank you for letting me know about the 2nd Caretaker book. I'll read it soon. Passengers looks very good, can't wait.
Just saw the preview for Passengers and I guessed the title of the movie as AtU. It's interesting to learn that the basic plot is from a 50's comic. ;) Can't wait to see this movie now.
allen steel's Coyote series has a subplot of a passenger waking up years early also. No hot co-passenger though..basically the poor guy lives alone for like 50 years till he dies from old age. oh..and eats 50 years worth of food that comes back to bite the ship when it arrives at the colony planet Coyote
Try reading Destination Void by Frank Herbert. It was written by the man who wrote Dune. Similar and very reminiscent. Not exact but right along the same lines, a good read even if not.
exactly!!! thats wt i thought immediately when I saw the trailer.so glad that i m not alone. quite excited for the movie asthe materials are very interesting
That's what I thought also. Interesting that the script for this has been around since 2007, though.(side note: the ATU books are great!)
Michelle wrote: "Either way, I bet the plot twist is the same: Chris Pratt's character woke up Jennifer Lawrence. Gotta be."There are some nice and spoiler-y reviews out there! I'm not confirming or denying anything, though...
The book, The Ghosts of Heaven, came to mind for me... The idea behind the spaceship in both is pretty much the same, and the malfunction.
Other way around. This book actually ripped off Passengers, if anything. THIS IS NOT A JOKE, AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND PASSENGERS ARE NOT TIME TRAVELERS. The script for Passengers has been around for a decade, finding continual difficulty to get made. Across the Universe came out five years ago. Beth may have read the script and wrote the book knowing that she could get away with it assuming that Passengers wouldn't get made-- until it did. It's a really good movie, despite some messed-up morals-- Jennifer Lawrence steals the show.
Michelle wrote: "Either way, I bet the plot twist is the same: Chris Pratt's character woke up Jennifer Lawrence. Gotta be."This is correct. Jim spends a year alone on the Avalon, tries to kill himself and regains his hope for life when he happens upon Aurora, a writer, reads her writing and falls for her. Then, after a long moral dilemma, he wakes her up. It's a really good movie, even though the movie's idea of it being right to wake her up kind of weirded me out, but the acting, worldbuilding and characters are great and I love that she's a writer.
^ I agree. His morals are definitely messed up but there's no rule that says characters have to be 100% pure and good. EW.com HATED that he did that so they gave it a D+ ... I gave it 3.5/5 in my movie review: http://www.yesnofilms.com/2016/12/mov...

I love Aurora. She's gorgeous (she's Jennifer Lawrence, so of course she's hot) but what makes her really special is her mind and her words-- she's an intellectual first, and it's awesome to see a movie do that.

Jeff wrote: "allen steel's Coyote series has a subplot of a passenger waking up years early also. I've been wracking my brain to remember the name and author of that book. It was a series of books.
Apparently the "Passengers" script is one of those scripts thats been passed around hollywood for quite some time because though many directors loved it it was considered a financial black hole. Interstellar romance is only popular in books they thought. It wasn't until the financial successes of stuff like Gravity and Interstellar and The Martian that it was finally picked up.So no I don't think its copying this particular book.
I wish there were more books out there about crews and passengers travelling to other worlds. It sets my imagination wild. I loved Passengers!
Noooooooooo! I reeeeeeeally want to read this book and have marked it in my TBR but I JUST watched The Passengers yesterday and now it's ruined this book for me!!! Has anyone read the book after watching the movie? Did it ruin your reading experience? I'm still going to read it though :) but that's so sad. :(
