When I vacationed in South Dakota and saw those horizons, my mind immediately went back to those books. Those descriptions were so foreign to me at the time having grown up on the east coast and Europe. But they made such an impression on my 9-year old self that the adult me recalled them immediately.

Britney | 380 comments I got an email from an author, Alicia Montgomery,wanting to know if I wanted to read the first book in her True Mates series, Fated Mates Book 1 of the True Mates Series by Alicia Montgomery . And the second book which is due to come out pretty soon. Does this kind of stuff happen often?? It's never happened to me before lol so figured I would ask here.

I get them all the time. The author probably sees something on your shelf similar to her book that you've rated well.

Words of advice...

Don't agree to read because you're flattered to be asked. Make certain you're highly interested before accepting. Consider the ramifications if you end up really not liking the book and your instinct is to give it a low rating and critical review. Established authors know the risks; others may not.

On the positive side, it's an opportunity to discover a new author and book you'll really enjoy. If you agree to do so, be clear about expectations (timing of when you plan to read and then write a review, where you'll post the review, etc.).

Hope this is helpful.

Under the Boardwalk (Pajaro Bay, #2) by Barbara Cool Lee Under the Boardwalk by Barbara Lee Cool on my Kindle. Finished 11/01/2016
Hallie Reed is coming to her best friend and former roommate's home town to work for the summer at the local amusement park. Hallie brings with her emotional and physical scars. When she comes to in the arms of her friends arms with parts of her memory missing from a weird car accident, she and the others start looking at this mystery. Now here friend and her younger brother are missing. This was a great mystery, romantic, suspenseful book. The second in the Pajaro Bay Series but certainly can be read as a stand alone book. It was clean book and a very fast read. I did not even suspect how the ending would be and the who dun-it. I would certainly recommend this series to all. 5 stars

Thanks for the comments ladies! And thank you Jonetta , I really appreciate you telling me all that. I do think the book sounds good, and wouldn't mind leaving a review since I do it anyway and if I do yea I will be honest no matter the situation.

But, I would be lying if I said I liked every one of them, I didn't. I wrote an honest review and learned to be more selective about those direct solicitations by the author.

Texas Hold Him by Lisa Cooke Texas Hold Him by Lisa Cooke in paperback. Finished 10/25/16. 5 stars.Story of a southern belle, post Civil War. Her family, like many others have been wiped out and her father is being blackmailed for murder. Lottie needs money fast and heads to a paddle wheel to learn how to gamble. Dyer is the best there is at poker and Lottie sets her mind on him. Dyer lost his family in a fire and is really looking for the one who murdered them. Dyer cares only about Dyer and won't let Lottie get under his skin or any other parts of him. I found this book to be exciting, tender and funny. Lottie learning about cards and poker was so very amusing. The love story that developed between them was beautiful, romantic and tender. I enjoyed the surprise ending. I will definitely read more of her work as I really enjoyed this book.

Midnight Waltz by Jennifer Blake Midnight Waltz by Jennifer Blake in paperback, Finished 11/14/16. **SPOILER ALERT**
The book started out very interesting and very historical, but by the middle of the book I was so bored. I enjoy great descriptions that take you back to the past, but this one was so overwhelming with all the minute descriptions, I found myself just skipping over them after a while. I feel the book could have been cut in half and made a much better story. Amalie and Julien had a pre-arranged wedding, which wasn't uncommon in those times. Finally the consummation of the marriage took place. Amalie couldn't tell the one that bedded her wasn't her husband but that of his cousin Robert? Dark yes, but she must have known the voice differences. And her mother-in-law was part of the scheme to get an heir. I figured out the reason why Julien didn't sire an heir right away. The romance and sex got boring after a while too. There were too many sub-plots in this book. Amalie is pregnant, and it is written about very little. I never give up on a book and I didn't this one. I was so disappointed in the ending. After spending this time reading this entire book, the ending was so lame. I will read more by this author, as I never give up on one I didn't care for. 1 star

Dawn | 199 comments So, a quick question for any Philippa Gregory fans out there. Audible had a sale a while back and I picked up three of the Tudor series. They turn out to be three somewhere in the middle. Is it important in this series for me to read the first two before I move on to the ones I purchased already?

message 981: by ♥ Joy Joy ♥ (last edited Nov 04, 2016 07:58AM) (new)

♥ Joy Joy ♥ (joylia) Since I enjoyed Amanda M Lee's Mystic Caravan series so much, I ventured on to read her two other supernatural series - Aisling Grimlock and Wicked Witches of the Midwest.

Grim Tidings (Aisling Grimlock, #1) by Amanda M. Lee

Aisling Grimlock series is funny but fair warning - the main character starts off over the top immature. If it wasn't for such good supporting characters (like her bff and roomie, Jerry), I might have not continued it from the 1st.

Good news is she becomes less annoying, more mature and I think the plot helps keep you reeled in.

=====================================

Any Witch Way You Can (Wicked Witches of the Midwest, #1) by Amanda M. Lee

Wicked Witches of the Midwest is a series that I'd have to say is a something you'll either really like or really hate.

I had actually read one of the short stories waaaayyyy back which (despite what it might say is NOT really a standalone and can't be read out of order) and because I wasn't familiar with the series or the writing style, I absolutely despised it.

Now having gotten to know the writing style and characters, it was actually decent.

The reason I'm saying this is that the characters are mostly crass and immature-ish. Having prepared myself by starting off with Mystic Caravan and then Aisling Grimlock, I wasn't completely turned off from the series when assaulted with characters I wanted to slap....a lot.

Good news is that the characters do grow and mature as the series continues and overall, I thought a few of the antics they get into was pretty entertaining. The bad news is you'll have to decide if you can last that long for it. hahaha.

======================================

Out of the three, I'd have to say Mystic Caravan wins out as her best series.

Mystic Caravan and Aisling Grimlock are kind of similar in a few ways (heroine has awesome gay bff and a love interest that helps in character growth).

Comparing the two:
Female MC - this one is easy. Poet wins all the way. She was just easier to follow and like right off the bat compared to Aisling.

Gay BFF - this is a tough one. Both are hilarious, loyal, and not afraid to be who they are. Though in similar roles, Jerry and Luke couldn't be more different. Luke is much more crass than Jerry, while Jerry has a more subtle..ish charm and style. I'm going to go with a tie on this.

The male love interest - Another easy choice. Griffin (Ailsing Grimlock). Compared to Griffin, Kade is kind of whiny. He does seem to be becoming less so (compared from the first to the second), so we'll see if he ends up upping Griffin at some point.

As for factoring in the Wicked Witches series - I can't. It's way different from these two. Good in that it's nice to see something different. Bad in that it differs in a very "in your face" kind of way.

Anyways, enough babbling about these. If you decide to read any of them, I hope you enjoy it :(

message 982: by ♥ Joy Joy ♥ (last edited Nov 04, 2016 07:59AM) (new)

♥ Joy Joy ♥ (joylia) Other books I've read that I'd recommend:

The Fairy Queen (The Dark Queens #6) by Jovee Winters - I enjoyed this but I wouldn't call this an "easy read." Likable, yes. Easy no. There are a lot of things going on in the story (especially as it cuts back and forth on things while trying to fit in yet other things that have already happened in the previous books) but I thought the author did a pretty good job.

Hate the ending though. Not because it was bad, but because I hate waiting for the next book!!
==========================================

Continuing with the Legendary Consultants series: The Worse for Were In Love With Her Werewolf Husband of Convenience (Legendary Consultants) by Abigail Owen - Link to My Review
==========================================

Paws and Effect (Magical Cats) by Sofie Kelly - Book 8 in the Magical Cats Mystery series. It's an easy/light read that's entertaining, but I'm starting to get a little frustrated with it as the relationship between the main character and her love interest is kind of lacking. Also, by now, I'd have hoped for more development in regards to how the cats came to have powers. So far...nothing.
==========================================

The Honeymoon Cottage (Pajaro Bay, #1) by Barbara Cool Lee - New series (Pajaro Bay) I just started. Though there were a few rough spots in the book, overall I enjoyed it and look forward to checking out the next in the series.
==========================================

Beyond Ruin (Beyond, #7) by Kit Rocha - Book 7 and not my favorite in the Beyond series, but still good. I'm not sure if it is because it's nearing the end of the series (there are 9 books total with the 9th is being released in Dec), but this book had so much stuff going on that it detracted from the relationship growth of Mad, Dylan, Jade and Scarlett.

Which is unusual. The authors usually are able to balance the various on-goings in Sector 4 while focusing on certain relationships but this one was all over.

♥ Joy Joy ♥ (joylia) Some more books.....(trying to break up posts so it's a little easier to read :P)

Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega, #1) by Patricia Briggs Hunting Ground (Alpha & Omega, #2) by Patricia Briggs River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs Fair Game (Alpha & Omega, #3) by Patricia Briggs - I love the Mercy Thompson universe (includes Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series) so much. So much. Nothing else to say but love love love it. Planning on starting on Frost Burned soon.

============================================

Her Vigilant SEAL (Midnight Delta #1) by Caitlyn O'Leary - Midnight Delta series. Another series just started that I fell in love with at first book. Have 2 and 3 waiting to be read :D

============================================

Malice (Southern Comfort, #.5) by Lisa Clark O'Neill Serendipity (Southern Comfort, #1) by Lisa Clark O'Neill Forbidden (Southern Comfort, #2) by Lisa Clark O'Neill - And one more series to lavish praise on. The stories and characters have been so intriguing and easy to relate to.

Fair warning. The Southern Comfort series technically starts with Serendipity, but there is a prequel trilogy that I'd have started with first if I had known (Malice, Avarice and Justice). Either way, still great reads that I highly recommend.

============================================

The Golden Apple (The Dark Forest) by Michelle Diener - first book had a few tedious parts in it but overall, was interesting enough that I plan to read the 2nd book. Hoping that the overall intrigue and conflict don't get too drawn out and tiresome.

============================================

Hoplite (Alien War Trilogy Book 1) by Isaac Hooke - first in the Alien War Trilogy and a surprisingly decent sci-fi book for anyone that likes or is looking for one to read. I loved the imagery and writing style of the author. My only issue is I felt that the characters lacked depth. I'm hoping that the second book will make up for that.

============================================

The Invisible Library (The Invisible Library, #1) by Genevieve Cogman - Freaking LOVED this book. Didn't love the $12 price tag on it, but I enjoyed it so much that it's not going to be a regret. :D

Glad I took a chance on this. The world build on this is amazing, in my opinion. I loved the details and the structure on how the library works, etc. Definitely recommend checking this out.
