Perl Singh | 2 comments Amir feels that he is responsible for his mother’s death. Amir tries to impress Baba but constantly feels that he is failing to do so. When Amir writes the story about the man who’s tears become pearls, he goes to show Baba what he has come up with but Baba does not give him much attention. However, Rahim Khan takes the story and leaves a note praising Amir’s talent. Rahim Khan and Baba grew up but due to racial differences Baba does not consider Rahim Khan a friend. Since Rahim Khan and Baba were not close Amir and Hassan are not as close as they could be. When the country changes to a republic Amir and Hassan encounter Assef who brings up the topic of befriending a Hazara was not the right choice by Amir. Assef also clarifies that his father knows Daoud Khan, who took over Afghanistan. The fact the Daoud Khan has taken over the country was a sense that the lives of the characters are about to change. When Amir goes to Kabul he sees the destructions of the country. Amir’s feelings were overcome with nostalgia from his childhood. He sees the destruction made to all the things he used to be familiar with and now all of sudden everything was unfamiliar which hurt him more. If you went to a place that you grew up in and then you realize that everything has changed, would you be hurt? Wouldn’t it be better to mourn over the loss for a few minutes but then be grateful that you weren’t there to witness it?
