Jackie | 380 comments I'm going to start reading A Song for Issy Bradley by Carys Bray today.

Jon Adcock | 255 comments Just starting Fobbit, a military satire along the lines of Catch-22:

Fobbit \’fä-bit\, noun. Definition: A U.S. soldier stationed at a Forward Operating Base who avoids combat by remaining at the base, esp. during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2011). Pejorative.

Half way through Dreamstreets: A Journey Through Britain’s Village Utopias. It isn't bad, but it isn't great either. Have got Weatherland: Writers & Artists Under English Skies to read over the weekend too

message 255: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Just started Night Waking by Sarah Moss for the book hunter challenge and also because I am seeing Sarah Moss at the Kibworth book festival in a couple of weeks. Really enjoying it so far!

I have only read Names for the Sea: Strangers in Iceland by her. It was really good though

Yes that is the only other one of her books I have read so far, really enjoyed it. I have a bit of a fascination with Iceland.

It is a place that I would love to go to.

Jackie | 380 comments Going to start The Girl in the Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz today. Loved the other books by Stieg Larsson.

message 260: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments I started The Forgotten Waltz. I was looking for The Green Road in the library, but this was the only book by Anne Enright that they had, so I thought I'd give it a try. At first it felt like Anne Tyler (who I like) but it lacks her lightness of touch and after reading about a third I've given up. It was just so inward-looking and circumscribed.
I'll see if I can get hold of The Green Road at another library for June's group read as I think I voted for it (!) but I don't feel like buying it.

Started Climbing Days a day or so ago, but haven't had much chance to read it as we have had visitors.

Jan Notzon | 261 comments Recently finished The Revenant by Michael Punke. It's a sizzler so my review is careful not to give anything away.

Started reading A Bend in the River the other day. On page 85 so far and enjoying it. I wish I'd thought of nominating it for one of the month's classic reads.

Read your review Jan and added the book to my TBR list!

I am listening to Moving by Jenny Eclair which is absolutely not what you would expect from her. Not remotely fluffy or funny, as I believe her other books have been.

I love it.

Jenny Eclair is great on Radio 4; and a tiny bit mad...

Great! Are we talking about Village of Secrets? Hope you enjoy.

message 272: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments I'm reading Time Out of Joint. It feels really modern considering it was written in 1959.

message 273: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments I'm going to see Jenny Eclair in her Grumpy Old Women show. Thought I'd treat my mum & sister to an evening out - not sure what they think about it lol.

I've started Blacklands by Belinda Bauer. It's the second book I'll have read by this author. She has a very easy to read writing style.

I am reading At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier and listening to Try Not to Breathe by Holly Seddon.

message 276: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 199 comments I'm am loving the Ransom Riggs trilogy of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. My son recommended the first book which I borrowed from him. I just finished the second book Hollow City which I borrowed from Overdrive. I will check out the third book Library of Souls from my local library. (I'm #10 on the Overdrive waiting list for the third book but don't want to wait that long!).

I've got the first book on my to read list...hadn't realised it was a trilogy. Glad to hear you are enjoying it Patricia!

Oooh, me too Jackie! How funny. Let me know what you think of it. So far I'm enjoying it very much although I suspect it won't sustain its promise to the end!

message 281: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Starting Inside the O'Briens by Lisa Genova today.

(Is this thread dying a death?!)

message 282: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Hiya Lisa!

I really enjoyed Girl on the Train. Gave it 4 stars. Only thing that very slightly spoiled it for me was that I guessed who had done it a while before the end - and that's unusual for me lol. Are you still enjoying it?

message 283: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Just starting Innocent Traitor it was given to me by a lovely lady some years ago. I haven't read any Tudor fiction for a long time, so will see how it goes.

Jackie wrote: (Is this thread dying a death?!)"

I hope not. It is frustrating that we have 1700 plus members and about 20 who contribute regularly!!!

message 285: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Does seem a bit odd, Paul. Are there still new people joining the group?

message 286: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod
We have had 23 join so far this month. Most seem to lurk though

message 287: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Oh. Well I suppose they can't be made to contribute but it's a shame they don't want to.

Hi Jackie
Glad it hit the spot for you! I'm just over halfway now – not a lot of reading time currently as it's manic at work – and so far it is better than I thought it would be (thought it would be overhyped like Gone Girl, etc). I have an idea whodunnit too but am not certain I am right yet so it's not spoiling it for me. :)

This happens on every list I have ever been on. People join many things, don't have time for it all, so only browse occasionally.

We have quality over quantity, imo!

message 291: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Yes that does seem to happen, Lisa. I don't seem to get the notifications from this thread anymore, I have to remind myself to check it. Maybe if that's happening to others it could be a factor too.

message 292: by Katheryn (new)

Katheryn Thompson (katherynt) Just started 31 Treats and a Marriage by Lynn Farley-Rose. My verdict so far: light, touching, and humorous.

Jackie, my notifications don't seem to work properly, so I often miss updates on a thread for a while, then remember to go in and look and have a catch up.

Reading All Is Not Forgotten by Wendy Walker at the moment. Not bad, but not great

message 296: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments I don't know why I've stopped receiving them; I haven't altered any settings on the site or my phone. I still get them from other groups - it's very odd.

message 297: by Paul (new)

Paul (halfmanhalfbook) | 5463 comments Mod
The only place to change that is account settings Jackie. You would need to be on the web page though.

message 298: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 199 comments Interestingly enough, I am finding/making time to read books outside of the "required" reading of the clubs and challenges I have taken on. I just finished The Things They Carried and I will finish Things Fall Apart this weekend. Neither fit any categories other than "that sounds good". I did finish One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest this week so I'm not completely off track!

message 299: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments I know, Paul, that's why it's so strange as I haven't touched anything.

I'm starting Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline today. A fair few on my friends list have read & rated this book pretty highly, so I'm looking forward to reading it myself.

message 300: by Jan (new)

Jan Notzon | 261 comments I'm reading a tome on the origins of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. It's quite a bit more detail than I initially wanted, but it's very interesting...and sad.
