Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments Jackie - loving it so far! Nearly 2 3rds through. It flows really well, so I've read 120 pages today alone

message 102: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Laurie, I thought it was sad too, very good though.

Glad you like it Toyah, I think I'm bit of a Khaled Hosseini groupie, I love all his books haha.

Going to start reading Cloudstreet by Tim Winton today.

Started The Outrun last night. It is about the authors decent into alcoholism and her recovery on the island of Orkney. Not exactly easy reading, but she is quite lyrical.

I really enjoyed that. Very different to what I thought it would be."

I've just started that yesterday. I was hooked from page one, but definitely not what I was expecting - a pleasant surprise so far. Not sure what to think of the whole business yet though, will have see how the story pans out. :-)

Just started The Book of Strange New Things today. Good, but weird so far

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments Paul wrote: "Just started The Book of Strange New Things today. Good, but weird so far"

Oh I loved it! I thought at first it was going to be a straightforward anti-religion story, but it's much more subtle and complex.

Started The Night Manager yesterday. Good so far.

message 111: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Are you still enjoying The Girl With All the Gifts, Kirsty?

I'm going to start reading The Children Act by Ian McEwan today. Been looking forward to it as I've really liked a few of his other books.

Toyah (rockabillybibiliophile) | 275 comments Currently reading George Orwell 1984

Read that a couple of years ago. It is still scary.

Reading London's Labyrinth: The World Beneath the City's Streets at the moment. It is not bad, but not exceptional so far.

message 115: by Pat (new)

Pat Morris-jones | 1373 comments 1984 was more scary, when read before 1984. I guess it's scary now as lots has come true.

It is worrying how many parallels can be drawn between the book and current society!

I just finished that. Very frightening I thought. Very good, but very frightening.

Hi Jackie, I'll finish TGWATG tonight, and have really enjoyed it. It's probably not something I would have picked up had I known what it was about (I assumed some sort of modern thriller, how wrong i was!) but I'm glad i did as it's been really exciting and kept me hooked all the way through.

The Children Act sounds interesting - another one to add to my ever-growing list of books to read. i've never read anything by McEwan. 1984 is also on my list, and has been since forever - we've got the film but I refuse to watch it before I read the book!!

I am a moderately fast reader Seraphina, and after a emergency op last week I am off and have more time to read this week

message 123: by Seraphina (new)

Seraphina | 100 comments Oh I hope your on the mend, I'm always wishing for more reading time but thinking more like a lotto win than surgery recovery :)

Sophie | 61 comments Oh dear, hope you're recovering well. Thank goodness you have books to keep you entertained!

I've just started The Insect Farm by Stuart Prebble.

message 126: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 380 comments Kirsty, I thought it was going to be a psych thriller too lol. I don't think I'd have picked it up either if I knew what it was about but I did think it was alright.

I've read a few of Ian McEwan's books. Atonement is v good, probably his most popular.

I'm starting The Stranger by Harlan Coben today. Have read a few of his other ones. They're usually pretty good, quick reads.

I really enjoyed TransAtlantic by Colum McCann one of my best reads of 2014.

Get well soon Paul but not so soon that you haven't made a big dent in your book stack!

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 463 comments I'm about half-way through The Invisible Ones. It has reviews on t h e back from The Times etc saying what an atnospheric thriller it is - but I'm finding it a bit dull and wish the pace would pick up.

message 144: by Jan (new)

Jan Notzon | 261 comments Now reading Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis. Finding it a bit of a slog. Perhaps the humor is a bit beyond me.

Kirsty Swinhoe | 10 comments Just started on In a Dark, Dark Wood - really gripping so far, I'm already guessing who did "it" and trying to work out exactly what "it" was!! halfway there, hoping a few sunny days over the easter break will get me to the answer quicker! :-)

Kristy: You must do your best reading outdoors. I always find grey, rainy days my best reading time.

I was given that book for my birthday so I'm interestedto hear you are enjoying it Kirsty, I might move it up my reading waiting list!

Tracey (traceypb) Started The Martian chronicles by Ray Bradbury today. I'm enjoying it ... something different for me :)

I was tempted to give this a go, mostly because my husband read it and hated it so much he gave up halfway through! I've only read one Ray Bradbury before (Something Wicked This Way Comes), and it was ok, but not something I'd go back to quickly. TBH the only novel of this which i've really fancied is Farenheit451. Let us know how you get on!

message 150: by Jan (new)

Jan Notzon | 261 comments I've heard you need to be an inveterate pessimist to like Bradbury. Personally, I haven't had the pleasure.
