I'm back in 1970s Laos with Thirty-Three Teeth. I'm rather enjoying my trip with Laos' communist national coroner and his mates again.

It's like vacationing in a much-beloved and familiar spot.

I did. i just finished it. It probably isn't for everyone, but I like reading about the different species of fish, the diving, and hearing about familiar places in the book.
i am in Kenya learning about ritual circumcision and the impact of Colonialism with The River Between by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o.
I am in Canada with Madelaine Thien's (the daughter of Malaysian-Chinese immigrants) Do Not Say We Have Nothing.

Yes, I was drawn into it very quickly and it sounds very promising.
After a couple of detours, I'm back in Japan with Journey Under the Midnight Sun by Keigo Higashino and in the US with Rise the Dark by Michael Koryta. Both are somewhat bloated and while generally good, I'm having to push my way through, albeit inefficiently.

Welcome to the thread Santosh. Hope you are enjoying or enjoyed your read.

I'm in Morocco with Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood. Enjoying it so far. I'm still in Jamaica with Goldeneye: Where Bond Was Born: Ian Fleming's Jamaica on the nonfiction front.

I remember enjoying that many years ago, although my edition was called The Harem Within: Tales of a Moroccan Girlhood. Might dig that out again one day.
Meanwhile, I'm slogging my way through The Marriage Bureau for Rich People, which I'm reading for Andhra Pradesh (India). About 1/3 of the way in, there seems to be little character development and not a lot of plot, but I'm learning how to set up and run my own non-computerised matching service...

I'm back in Mali with Walking with Abel: Journeys with the Nomads of the African Savannah by Anna Badkhen. She spends a year walking with a Tuareg/Berber group on their annual travel through the desert. I'm hoping it ventures into a bordering country because I've already read two books for Mali, haha. I wasn't even going to read it but it feels less like journalism and more like creative non-fiction so I just kept reading.
I'm in Rio, Brazil, reading Ways to Disappear. I've just started, and have been reeled in. Loving it so far! Peculiar and interesting, focussing on the disappearance of an author. I have a particular fascination with reading about the lives of authors, fictional or otherwise...perhaps its with the hope that their creativity will rub off on me!
As part of the 24in48 readathon, I finally started in on A General Theory of Oblivion which will check off my box for Angola. I was a bit disappointed that it is about a Portuguese woman in Angola and most of the other characters are non-African, but I suppose there's room for that too. :)
I've been tentatively reading the first few chapters of The Heart of the Buddha: A Novel by Elsie Sze for Bhutan, in an Amazon sample. Now I'm teetering on the edge: do I reserve it from the library and continue reading, or abandon? It's coming across as being a bit overwrought for my liking, and as I'm already at Ch5, I wonder if it is likely to settle down.
I'm in France and America with The Gypsy Madonna. It's about a little boy born to a French woman by a German soldier after the war. They are both treated so badly he loses his speech. Something different and a good read.
I'm in Ireland with The Glorious Heresies, which I'm listening to. This is the book that won the Baileys Women's Prize for fiction in 2016, and was the only book from the shortlist I hadn't read. It figures. :)
Jenny (Reading Envy) wrote: "This is the book that won the Baileys Women's Prize for fiction in 2016, and was the only book from the shortlist I hadn't read."That happens to me as well and by the time the winner is announced the library reservation queue is a year long.
Just finished Stolen: Escape from Syria. 3 stars. I'm counting it towards Syria, but considerable time was spent in Cyprus and brief periods in Lebanon and Ireland also.

Oh my - we won't be seeing you for awhile! I have yet to pick it back up again. I started it years ago and got through probably a quarter of the way through - life happened and I never did pick it up again. I keep promising myself I will one day - the day hasn't come yet although the book keeps staring me in the face since it's the oldest book on my TBR list! Let us know how you get on with it.

I'm in Hungary with Magda Szabo's The Door for #WITMonth - Reading Women in Translation during August.
Carol wrote: "I'm in Bangladesh with The Good Muslim and in western US with Rise the Dark. So very different."I've just read all three in the Bangladesh trilogy, brilliant and so different all three of them.
I'm in the Soviet Union with Despite The Falling Snow and Gorky Park, and in 1980's Iran with The Septembers of Shiraz. Enjoying all three immensely.

I think I'll back up and read the first after this. Did you have a favorite, Claire?

They are all good, but the first one is probably my favourite.
I'm in Norway with two sisters who cannot live with or without each other The Looking-Glass Sisters by Gøhril Gabrielsen.
I had to look at the acknowledgements to find out where I am. I'm in prehistoric France with The Wolf's Boy by Susan Williams Beckhorn. This is a children's book that speculates about the origin of dogs. I'm enjoying it.
I'm in Bulgaria reading East of the West: A Country in Stories. I can warmly recommend to anyone interested in eastern Europe, or just short stories. They're amazing!
I'm in Saxony which is part of Germany in the timeline where I normally live. In the alternate timeline that I'm visiting Saxony became Judenstaat, the Jewish State, in 1948. The book is Judenstaat by Simone Zelitch. There is no Israel in this timeline.
