Read the sequel to The Dark Lord of Derkhom, Year of the Griffin
which had some weaknesses unfortunately, much as I usually enjoy Diana Wynne Jones' work.
Finished Diana Wynne Jones' first children's book, Wilkins' Tooth which was published in the States as "Witch's Business". Interesting read as I discovered her with "Dogsbody", her third I think, and hadn't read this one before.
A catch-up of some of the books I've read lately (haven't reviewed them all yet):The Ghost Road
by Pat BarkerExile
by Martin OwtonThe Homeward Bounders
by Diana Wynne Jones
Started to read an Agatha Christie hardback - facsimilie edition of the 1957 original. Haven't been able to add it to my shelf as it turns out there are a lot of these facsimilies all published under the Collins Crime Club label and all sharing one ISSN (not ISBN) number as a series, with none having a ISBN. So I have created a library query for that at present.anyway, they are all sold separately on amazon as well as in a charity shop (where I got this and another one from) so here is the Amazon record for anyone interested - 4.50 From Paddington.

Sorted out the library query as someone had given another Christie novel the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) as an ISBN which it is not. The ISSN is not specific to a publisher and just identifies a series. My two Christie hardbacks are apparently part of a part work but are sold separately as are all the rest, on Amazon, and no ISBN appears anywhere. The librarians sorted that out anyway so I was able to add my books to my Currently Reading and TBR shelves.
Read the first of two Agatha Christie's - 4.50 From Paddington
. I didn't love it as much as the Joan Hickson adaptation, chiefly because there isn't enough Miss Marple in it, but it was quite an enjoyable read.
Read a police procedural by Peter Lovesey, Cop to Corpse but although it was quite well written, I wasn't that keen.
Have started reading the other Agatha Christie facsimile edition that I picked up in a charity shop - And Then There Were None
.
Pam wrote: "Finished And Then There Were None,
by Agatha Christie. Enjoyed that one."did you see the BBC adaptation earlier in the year? It is one of hers I haven't read.
Yes I've criticised that adaptation in the review actually because it almost put me off the book. It was fine if people wanted to drool over Aidan Turner in a towel - I'm not criticising that - but there was just so much changed to introduce masses of melodrama, and usually making it implausible all round.
Finally got back to Volume 3 of Robin Hobb's LiveShips trilogy after some months. They are such massive tomes they are a bit off putting - Ship of Destiny. Also there is a lot of cruelty to dragons which I am not a great fan of although I do think this trilogy is a lot better than the Assassin one.
Finally managed to get back to the LiveShip Traders trilogy by Robin Hobb and read book 3 - Ship of Destiny
. If I'd left it any longer I'd have forgotten entirely what happened in books 1 and 2. Again it was much better than the Farseer books, but there were still flaws that deny it a 5 star rating in my opinion.
Read volume 2 in the Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb, The Golden Fool
, which suffers a bit from Book 2 syndrome.
Before diving into the 800+ pages of the final Tawny Man volume, thought I'd read a genealogical suspense novel with a 1940s background - The Spyglass File as a change of pace. Enjoying it so far.
Still occasionally dipping into the Zelazny, The Hand of Oberon, but it hasn't been holding my interest as it is mainly Corwin having conversations about who could be behind the nefarious goings on - reminds me rather of The Golden Fool in that respect.
Finished Fear in the Cotswolds
which unfortunately didn't live up to the expectation set by the title. Now started number 5 in the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley - Speaking from Among the Bones
Started Trumps of Doom, not a comment on the US election, but number 6 in the Amber series, or book 1 in the follow-up of five books about Corwin's son Merlin. I only have the first two and from my re-read of series 1 I'm not sure if it's worth getting the rest as most people say series 1 is better.
Finished Speaking from Among the Bones
which is a 4 star read. Enjoyed it, just had a few minor niggles so it doesn't quite get the 5 star. Now reading the latest Cotswolds volume and quite enjoying it - Guilt in the Cotswolds.
Finished the latest installment in the Cotswolds cosy crime series by Rebecca Tope, Guilt in the Cotswolds and a book for family historians, My Ancestor was in the British Army.
Finished book 6 in the Flavia de Luce series. Almost earned 5 stars but the resolution of the murder let it down - The Dead in their Vaulted Arches
.
I'd picked up Finders, Keepers by King a while back, and have only just realised it is the sequel to Mr Mercedes. Anyway, I've read quite a bit of it now and the first part wasn't too bad when it was just about the criminal and the boy. It's started to bog down again now the ex-cop and the sidekick with mental health issues have been reintroduced.
Hi Desley. I've had a few I've been disappointed with - started to have this with IT and The Tommyknockers which is when I stopped reading them as they came out. I've dipped in and out in later years and thought Needful Things was average and From a Buick 8 absolute tosh. The Gunslinger books were very OTT for me.I went back with these 2 as I had heard good things about them.

Started The Hawk of May by Gillian Bradshaw, first in an Arthurian trilogy. Also reading The Blood of Amber, the second in the Merlin cycle of Amber novels by Roger Zelazny. It's the last I have and on the current showing and how I found the five-volume original Corwin cycle, I don't think it's going to be worth getting the final three as this whole series was distinctly underpar compared to on my memory of it.
Just realised I forgot to mention I finished the first Merlin Amber novel and posted a review of it - Trumps of Doom
Finished the second volume of Zelazny's second Amber Chronicles five book sequence. Had some disappointments with the first five book Corwin series, but this second one about his son Merlin is flagging even more so I'm not planning to obtain the final 3 books - review here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1837189768
Finished Gillian Bradshaw's Hawk of May, first in an Arthurian trilogy. A bit disappointing, sadly - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1390905407
Have started a book I'm enjoying by a good but under-rated author, John Gordon: The Ghost on the Hill
