But usually in fantasy books, they explain how that happens, don't they?

What did Johnny Walker gain by eating the cat's hearts?

Cats were not really required but it was a kind of magical realism that the author wanted to express... he gained nothing..
the author just wanted to express that souls are not lost despite lives being lost.. and all those souls are always roaming.. the whole concept of how there is a supreme being who actually monitors these souls and how souls can be made evil or good etc.. the whole thing at the forest later where Kafka is tempted by the flute owner and has to decide whether to stay in a fantasy land or go back to reality.. that was what was Johnny Walker's role... to help Kafka decide his path in the end...
