Jeanette James | 2 comments In the beginning of this book, Helen talks about how much she hates her mother and that she has dreamt of killing her mother her whole life; it started when she was a kid, around eight or so. Her mother rejected her when he was younger because she was not the was her mother wanted her to be; her mother wanted her to be a girly-girl but she was a tomboy and her mother did not like it. As Helen grew up she came to notice that her mother was not like the rest of the parents in the neighborhood; her mother was suffering from Dementia. Helen has dualistic feelings towards her mother; she loves her because she is her mother; however she also hates her because of the way her mother treated her when she was a child and the way she treated her while she was an adult. When Helen was about fifteen, her father committed suicide because he loathed taking care of a woman with and illness after awhile and could no longer handle the responsibilities of taking care of his wife and her illness. Instead of getting a divorce, he thought it would be best of killing himself so he would not have that burden anymore. Helen was devastated when her father died because she was a daddy’s girl and had a different relationship with him then she did with her mother because she could tell him things that she could not tell her mother because she did not understand that seriousness of the situation.
When Helen killed her mother, it was because her mother was going on a rampage about a bowl that her mother’s neighbor took without her permission and she would not stop, so to shut her up Helen grabbed a pillow and suffocated her mother until she broke her nose and until she was not breathing anymore. Right before he mother died, she lost control of her bowel movements and pooped all over herself, so Helen took off all of her clothes and washed the poop off of her mother he wrapped her in two blankets and let her sit in them for awhile while she sat in the backyard thinking of a way to keep her death a secret from her neighbors and the police. When she thought of a plan to cut her body up into pieces like she dreamt of when she was younger, she dragged her mother to the basement to prep her. While she was prepping her to be cut up, Helen called her ex-husband to tell him what she just had done and he got the first flight from Santa Barbra to Wisconsin where Helen was living so he could help her through this difficult time.
Jake assimilated Helen’s guilt as his own in order to help Helen cover up what she had done so she would not go to jail and also so their children would not find out what their mother had done to their grandmother. They came up with a plan that they would stage a brake in at her mother’s house so the police would nit find out that Helen killed her mother instead she found her mother in the basement and waited for her ex-husband to get there for support when she called the police; however, when Helen was at the college modeling nude for the art class, to police officers came and told Helen that they found her mother died in her house and they were starting an investigation on how she died. This made Helen panic because she did not want them to find out that she killed she mother or that her ex-husband helped her with the cover up. In the end they were not able to find Helen to ask her a few questions because she was hiding from them in her mother’s house so she did not get convicted of the murder of her mother and Jake did not get into trouble either.
