What MOVIES or DVDs have you seen? (PART NINE: On-Going General Thread)

I haven't looked yet, but wonder if you can stream movies such as "Wuthering Heights" and " David Copperfield. Or perhaps the local library would have classic movies?
One of my favorite books is "Pride and Prejudice." Would like to see that movie again.

Sometimes on TCM I catch a good one. The other day I enjoyed "Till the Clouds Roll By", a biopic of Jerome Kern. There were so many stars performing in that film... even Frank Sinatra in a white suit, singing "Ole Man River". All the many orchestra members wore white suits. I can't begin to imagine all the work and expense that went into the making of that lush movie!
What a musical genius Jerome Kern was!
The Crandall Library has a DVD of David Copperfield with Radcliffe, Daniel. http://pac.sals.edu/polaris/search/ti...

Netflix has the original Wuthering Heights with Olivier:

Same for David Copperfield:

Thanks for checking on the classic movies. I'll certainly check out the links.

I've never seen or heard about this movie, "Candleshoe" - thanks I'll add this one to my list.

"Till the Clouds Roll By" - I'll check this out. Since Frank Sinatra is in the movie, may have seen this as a child. My Dad enjoyed Frank Sinatra so perhaps I've seen this but just don't remember the name. Happens a lot to me!

Here's a link to the movie, Nina. I've put it on my queue.

Thanks!

Thanks, Nina. I'll try to watch it. Sounds like fun.

Linda, I watched "Angel in the House". It was terrific. Thanks for posting about it. I told my sisters about it.

"Looking to adopt a child and unable to conceive a child of their own, the Morrison's lives are turned upside down when a 7 year old boy unexpectedly shows up on their doorstep."

Nina, I watched that movie several days ago (via streaming from Amazon). It was very unusual and kept my interest, even though it was a bit strange.
"Two Brothers and a Bride" (2004)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCVX88G/...
"Two brothers need a wife after the death of their doting mother and decide that a Russian woman will best meet their needs. They learn about the realities of life and love on this romp into mail-order bride land. "

"Brothers Jake (Tim Blake Nelson) and Josh (David Arquette) work at a Midwest vegetable farm and are cared for in every possible way by their doting mother (Lois Smith). When their mother dies, the boys realize they're hopeless at taking care of themselves, so they head to Russia to search for wives."

Glad you liked the movie. I'll probably watch again someday. Little boy is just a doll.

Nina and Joy - think I'll try this movie! Adding to my watch list.

Yes, Linda, the little boy in "Angel in the House" was adorable. What a great idea to create that child-character, so precocious, all dressed up like a little man and spouting so much wisdom. The young actor who played the part was Maurice Cole. I'm surprised that he hasn't gotten more publicity.

Based on the novel: Based on the book Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler which I will add to my books to read.
Series is very interesting - Jazz Era - location of filming (Savannah Georgia) - lifestyle - clothing - wild and reckless behaviors ....

Linda I started streaming that video series but after a while I lost interest because it just seemed to be the same type of scene over and over again, with Zelda acting flirty. I guess the actress (Christina Ricci) didn't appeal to me and I was turned off.
Usually, if I especially like a performer, I can watch her/him forever!
Maybe I should give it another try, since there's such a shortage of good movies to stream.

Good point, Nina.
I loved The Eddy Duchin Story! A great musical.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051435/?...
Starring: Yul Brynner, Maria Schell, Claire Bloom, Lee J. Cobb, William Shatner, & Richard Basehart.
Adapted from The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
Since I had never read the book, I was glad to watch it just to understand the plot. Yul Brynner held my interest throughout. He has such magnetism!. Maria Schell and Claire Bloom were perfectly cast.
Wiki says:
==========================================
"The Brothers Karamazov is a passionate philosophical novel set in 19th-century Russia, that enters deeply into the ethical debates of God, free will, and morality. It is a spiritual drama of moral struggles concerning faith, doubt, judgment, and reason, set against a modernizing Russia, with a plot which revolves around the subject of patricide.
... Since its publication, it has been acclaimed as one of the supreme achievements in world literature."

I'm glad I didn't know about all the ethical questions raised by the novel. I would have been over-whelmed. They are mentioned in the movie but the debate is kept to a minimum.

My husband and I both enjoy this show.
"Midsomer Murders is a British television detective drama[1] that has aired on ITV since 1997. The show is based on Caroline Graham's Chief Inspector Barnaby book series, as originally adapted by Anthony Horowitz. The current lead character is DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon), who works for Causton CID. Dudgeon's character is the younger cousin of former lead character DCI Tom Barnaby (John Nettles). Dudgeon first appeared as randy gardener Daniel Bolt in the Series 4 episode "Garden of Death". Dudgeon permanently joined the show in 2011 following Nettles' departure. "

Started back in 1997 and now there are 117 Espisodes and 19 Seasons.

"Trouble with the Curve" is about doing a job you like, relationships (or the lack of them), opening up your heart, and making choices.
Enjoyable movie - starring Clint Eastwood.

"For decades Gus Lobel (Clint Eastwood) has been one of baseball's best scouts -- but now his age is catching up with him. Still, he refuses to be benched even though his bosses are questioning his judgment. Tasked with checking out the country's hottest batting prospect, Gus is forced to accept help from his daughter, Mickey (Amy Adams). Though they haven't spent time together in years, father and daughter make new discoveries about their shared past, which could change their future."

Thanks for telling us about that, Linda. Clint Eastwood is terrific!

"Green Mansions" (1959)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052864/?...
"A young man in the jungles of Venezuela meets a strange girl of the forest and falls in love with her."
Stars: Audrey Hepburn, Anthony Perkins, Lee J. Cobb
Adapted from Green Mansions by William Henry Hudson (First published in 1904)

Instead I will watch my latest Netflix DVD,
"The Girl on the Train" (2016):
https://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/The%20G...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3631112/?...
"A divorcee becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that promises to send shockwaves throughout her life."
Adapted from: The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
Not sure I'll like this one either but I'm curious about it since it was a bestseller.
WIKI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gir...

I'm glad that now I know what the story was all about. At least my curiosity has been satisfied.
Here's the IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3631112/?...

A section or two where I felt the author thought the readers were idiots. Wanted to make sure we were aware of the alcoholism which I found truly annoying. I heard myself saying, "Enough already! I get it. I GET IT!!"

"Harriet Craig" (1950)
Stars: Joan Crawford, Wendell Corey...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042544/?...
"Domineering Harriet Craig holds more regard for her home and its possessions than she does for any person in her life. Among those she treats like household objects are her kind husband ... "
It's an adaptation of the play, Craig's Wife (first published 1925) by George A. Kelly.
This is interesting for at least 2 reasons:
1. The play was the winner of the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
2. The author, George A. Kelly, was the uncle of famous actress, Grace Kelly.
Joan Crawford plays one of those stern characters she is famous for. I never liked her because of that characteristic.
