Nina wrote: "Interesting but sad to read about the mistreatment but was it understandable? Probably not. War is so cruel to so many undesereable."Was it mistreatment? I don't think so, at least not comparatively historically and given that most of the British had probably lost close relatives just a generation before in WWI. Then they had to fight another war in which their country was plastered by bombs & they faced their own rationing & hardships. They seemed quite restrained to me. They weren't shooting suspected Nazi's out of hand, anyway. I would have found that understandable, if deplorable.
Just watched "Treasure Island," that was made in 1934 with Lionel Barrymore and Jackie Cooper as a young boy. The latter one was on the same floor as my husband at Notre Dame. They sometimes played cards together. They were both in the Navy at the time waiting to be Navy pilots. He said Jackie C, was quite arrogant and not very likable. He was good in the movie.
Rutger Hauer died today, one of my favorite actors. While he was fantastic in a lot of movies, his "Tears in the Rain" speech is probably what he'll best be remembered for. He rewrote the script for it & it is iconic for all SF fans.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoAzp...
He's also well known as the head vampire in Buffy, the 1992 movie with Donald Sutherland & Kristy Swanson. I guess he was better known in Europe, though.
I liked a lot of his 'B' movies.
Blind Fury (1989)
Crossworlds (1996)
Hobo With A Shotgun (2011)
Omega Doom (1996)
Split Second (1992)
Wedlock (1991)
He did a lot of 'good' movies too, though.
Escape from Sobibor (1987)
Fatherland (1994)
Soldier of Orange (Soldaat van Oranje) (1977)
The Osterman Weekend (1983)

BTW, while I'm here, let me say that I didn't finish listening to _The Shape of Water_. I found the first part hard to follow and it didn't interest me. So I quit. Needless to say, I was very disappointed after all the hoopla I had heard about it. I'll add this paragraph to my review. The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro.
Once Upon a Time in the West (1969) stars Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, & Jason Robards. It was slow, a little tough to follow at first, but really good. Henry Fonda plays the really bad guy. He's fast with a gun & totally lacking scruples. Bronson & Robards are also bad guys, but better than Fonda. Cardinale is a soiled dove that we're not sure of, but sympathetic to. There doesn't really seem like there is anyone to really root for until the end when all finally becomes clear. I vaguely remembered seeing this once before & liking it, but I don't think I saw the whole thing, so I didn't really get it. It's worth watching in its entirety.Apparently this is the first of a trilogy by Sergio Leone, the same guy that did the 'Man With No Name' trilogy that stars Clint Eastwood. That one is a fairly obvious trilogy: "Fistful of Dollars" (1964), "For A Few Dollars More" (1965), & "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly" (1966), all with Eastwood starring & all are westerns.
I wouldn't have known this one was a trilogy since both the production dates (a 15 year spread) & settings vary more nor are there any common stars.
Once Upon a Time in the West (1969) Fonda, Bronson, Cardinale, & Robards. It's set in the American west & involves the building of the railroads.

A Fistful of Dynamite (1971) aka Duck, You Sucker! or Once Upon a Time, the Revolution stars Rod Steiger & James Coburn. I never knew the last name until I saw it in the Wikipedia entry. It's set in & during the Mexican Revolution.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984) is the final movie in the trilogy. It stars Robert De Niro and James Woods. It's a gangster movie set in 1918 in NYC.

I plan on watching them all in order now. As good as the first one was, they should be worth it. All have stars I like, too.
Watched an old Shirley Temple movie last night, "Wee Willie Winkie," and it was very good. Director John Ford. Good acting and of course how do you resist Shirley? . Set in India and little did I know when I first saw this movie at age ten that I'd have a daughter and four grandchildren who would live in India.

I agree, Shirley Temple is hard to resist!

Nina wrote: "Watched "Somersby" Too sad ending."Nina, I haven't seen that movie. I hate sad movies.
"Sommersby" (1993)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108185/...
"A farmer returns home from the Civil War, but his wife begins to suspect that the man is an impostor."
Stars: Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, Lanny Flaherty
I'm listening to The Tortilla Curtain by T. Coraghessan Boyle via SALON Overdrive in my browser.I read it a while ago but am trying it again.
Below is a link to the review I wrote in 2009:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I had given it 4 stars.
So far it's very depressing. I can't imagine why I gave it 4 stars.
Nina wrote: "Spoiler/Somersby is hung in the end. So pretty depressing."Oh, how awful! I see that it's Jodie Foster's character, named Laurel Sommersby, who dies that way.
Nina wrote: "No, it's the actor who plays, Sommersby, Richard Gerre."Oh, I see. Thanks, Nina. I misunderstood. I just now read the summary at Wiki.
It says:
"As Jack is taken to the gallows, he asks Laurel to be amongst the crowds, as he cannot "hang alone". As Jack is about to be hanged, Laurel makes her way to the front of the crowd."
ABOVE IS FROM WIKI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sommersby
PS-At Wiki it says:"Several witnesses are brought up to discredit this Sommersby as a fraud, who state that he is Horace Townsend, an English teacher and con artist from Virginia."
It also says:
"Horace Townsend then buries Jack Sommersby, which is seen in the opening scene of the film. Horace decided to assume Jack Sommerby's identity. Jack concludes by saying he can't admit to being Horace, because Laurel and the children would lose everything."

"The African Doctor "(2016)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5555502/...
"The story of Seyolo Zantoko, who as a freshly graduated doctor of Congolese descent in France, struggled with his family to integrate in a small rural village, and ended up being considered as one of the most respected doctors in the area."
The action/spy series " Mission: Impossible" originally premiered in the 1970's. However they tried to revive the series in 1988/1989/.A goof friend of mine loaned me the set of DVDs. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them. I have seen several of the 1970's version but I never saw this series that I can recall.
Sure reminded me of what a great actor Peter Graves was. He was the only actor to appear in both "Mission" series.
I remember the old Mission Impossible series. It was on for quite a while - 4 years? I think in the third season, Leonard Nimoy joined the show. As a big fan of the original Star Trek, I was thrilled.
Just saw on TV about the new Streaming. The segment began with saying when Disney released "Old Yellow"Many years ago it was seen by millions and so popular it showed again two years later. Now they said no theater would show it. So they decided to stream that type of movie again instead of the usual loud and boisteris ones that the theaters want now.

I don't know if any of you are regular Jeopardy watchers, but we are. In January, they're going to have a really neat showdown between Jennings, Rutter, & Holzhauer the 3 best champs ever. They're going to duke it out until one of them has won 3 games!https://www.vulture.com/2019/11/james...
That should be really exciting.

Watching season 3 of The Crown - a struggle as the main characters - the actors all have changed - a hard adjustment
Linda wrote: "Watching season 3 of The Crown - a struggle as the main characters - the actors all have changed - a hard adjustment"Yes, I agree, Linda. That would be a hard adjustment for me too.
Nina wrote: "Watching "The Crown," and it's very good. Great actors."Nina, we enjoyed seasons 1 and 2. However, season 3 most of the main characters have new actors and some choices were not good.
Just finished watching, "The Two Popes," and i would give it five stars; it's moving and excellent acting. How could Anthony Hopkins do otherwise?
Nina wrote: "Watching "The Crown," on Netflix; so far so good."Let me know when you get to Season 3 and how you feel about the cast changes.
Nina wrote: "Just finished watching, "The Two Popes," and i would give it five stars; it's moving and excellent acting. How could Anthony Hopkins do otherwise?"Anthony Hopkins is great - adding this movie to my list. Thanks Nina.
Tried watching "The Irishman," and just didn't get into it past the first few minutes. Not my thing even if it was nominated. Seemed much of the same old thing about the mob. Do we need more?
Nina wrote: "Tried watching "The Irishman," and just didn't get into it ..."I haven't tried it yet. A lot of good actors, but your thoughts were what I had, too.
Watched "Sandition" last night and certainly not Jane Austin's best. I loved all of her others; some I've seen more than once but whoever finished this one didn't stick to her style or perhaps that was impossible; characters hard to keep track of and the plot is invisible without concentration. Jane might be turning over in her grave.
