Up to chapter 12 (view spoiler)[ I'm thisclose to crying, OhmyGOD. Augustus is so calm about cancer, even with his girlfriend dying, and the girl he's in love with also possibly dying. Hon, how do you do this?!? Hazel is more honest, she admits how terrified she is. I'm not saying Augustus is lying, I just think I'd be a lot more like Hazel if I was in that situation (hide spoiler)]

And while they'd finally fallen in love too, on that gorgeously romantic trip to Amsertdam. Which was very romantic, by the way. I love their love for each other, they're not afraid of getting hurt, because what could be worse than dying? Which is sad, but makes the romance all the more better (hide spoiler)]

Finished, and an emotional mess... (view spoiler)[ I thought I'd be okay this time, because I know that Augustus dies. But it's just like Hazel was saying, it's more about who he left behind. The eulogies really got me. Then when Hazel was talking to her parents about how she's going to die, and how she won't be a mum anymore, and ohmygod... I wasn't prepared for that, and that was really had me bawling. Why did I re read this again? Was it really worth the emotional pain?? (hide spoiler)]

Anyways. Ch 3 (view spoiler)[I apparently like "guy movies." I never did get that. I know guys aren't fans of romances so that genre being out for them, but I know lots of females that like action, sci-fi, etc. Well, at least she is liking the book he loaned her. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 1: (view spoiler)[I hate/love reading books about people being sick; I suffer a lot and they tend to be heartbreaking but they also make you think and appreciate things more.

I like Hazel and Isaac's sighted relationship.

So, does Isaac orchestrate the whole thing? And to what degree? He talked to Augustus about Hazel, pressumably because he wants her to enjoy her life and to harbor it. I get, and admire, her not being afraid to die, but she should not give herself up to it.

Thank God it's Augustus, because going off with a complete stranger to his house is not very clever.

I love the cigarette metaphor, though I also wondered if he did it to seem cool too. (hide spoiler)]

@Jamie I feel the same way about "guy movies". (view spoiler)[I always get mad when people say something is "for guys" or "for girls". I guess that it wouldn't have bothered me if she only said that it was a "boy movie", because I can understand that, as it's targeted that way. But why? Can't we just enjoy whatever the hell we want? I am a girl and I love all these "guy movies". It's not about gender, it's about your likes. (hide spoiler)]

FINISHED. I haven't commented because I needed to continue reading. Random thoughts about it:

(view spoiler)[--I loved it. Before even starting it, I already guessed how it was going to end, but that didn't make the experience less enjoyable. And I also didn't expect to know about Gus' condition so soon. I thought, given everything people said about the book, that it would happen all of a sudden.

--I expected the book to end like AIA, mid-sentence, but was suprised it didn't.

--I was proud about how Hazel handled everything. Even with Gus's ex-girlfriend. She didn't get jealous when she saw their photographs. She is very strong, brave and mature. Gus and Isaac too. They have suffered more than anyone should and that made them who they are. However, they are not their sicknesses, this is not a cancer story, but a beautiful love story.

--At first, I wanted Hazel to spend more time with Isaac. They were friends but barely hung out, so I was happy to see them together at the end. Not like Kathlyn, though, I forgot about her. (hide spoiler)]

It's just that as they meet the author (I agree with what you said about him) and they ended up "on a good note", that the book would reflect itself on everything that Hazel said about it and ended it similarly. She and Augustus discussed it so much and it was such an important part of her, that I was sure of that, but I'm not complaining.

To Ch 6

So I just read Turtles All the Way Down earlier this week, and it was the first John Green novel I've ever read. It was okay, but I was wondering what all the fuss was about.

I like this one so much better!

First of all, I adore Agustus; he is so funny and cute. I like Hazel too, and I think her illness is written convincingly while still leaving room for her to be more as a character than just her illness. And Agustus (view spoiler)[ giving her his wish seriously made me melt into a soppy puddle. (hide spoiler)] Glad I finally got around to picking up this book. 'Nuff said. For now.

Such a sweet story. I don't know that anything world-shattering happened in this section, although I've certainly known families with children who have cancer that have (view spoiler)[ gone through similar scares to the one Hazel suffered. I'm pretty sure as a cancer parent you don't ever actually stop worrying about your kid, even if they've been in remission a long time. I like all the poetry and "quotes" in it too. And I love the premise of the trip to Amsterdam, although I'm quite concerned it will kill her, since I know this book has a sad ending. My only minor flaw-finding I suppose would be that I think Augustus and Hazel have voices that sound a little too similar in writing. The same wry wordy wit. That can happen in real life but here it feels more like the author's voice coming through a little too much. It's not really hindering my enjoyment of the story though. (hide spoiler)]

Ch 11 - 15

Well, that was (view spoiler)[ a twist I didn't see coming. A couple really. That Van Houten was such a jerk, but of course the bigger one that Augustus is actually the one that is severely terminal. Cancer sucks. I lost a student with it years ago, my next door neighbor lost her little boy to it and one of my friends had her baby come down with it as well. Just horrible. But I digress. I love that they got to go to Amsterdam! And I loved the lines the title came from. This book might actually make me cry :/ (hide spoiler)]

Ch 16 - fin

So I actually couldn't stop reading and just barreled right through to the end. So much sadness. I thought the idea of the (view spoiler)[ pre-funeral was funny and sweet in a really morbid sense, but I'm glad they got to do it with Augustus, because funerals are sort of awful too.

Green certainly didn't shy away from the reality of dying from cancer. It was hard to read, particularly when he was so sick in the car and Hazel was just thinking about how we stick cancer kids up on pedestals and say things to make them look like saints after they're gone when really they're just ordinary kids wishing so hard they could just be well. Sickness isn't tidy or heroic. It just sucks. (hide spoiler)]

Such a beautiful book. I understand absolutely why it was such a hit. Loved it so much more than Turtles.

(view spoiler)[I loved the way Green handled Van Houten. It's giving the message that the whole arc of the story was actually about Hazel and Gus, not about Hazel's journey with the book and cancer as we were lead to believe in the beginning. (hide spoiler)]

This is a first time read for me and I haven't even seen a trailer for the movie - yes, I live under a rock - so don't ruin it for me! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Hazel's lung scare scared me! Such a scary and sad reality that sick kids face. I felt for Hazel when she said she's tired of making her parents feel this way ugh heartbreaking

She got clearance and is going on the trip. Gus admits he loves her and Hazel is getting nervous, maybe? A little A Walk to Remember vibes but still love it (hide spoiler)]
Ch 10

(view spoiler)[I loved all of the Amsterdam scenes. I was actually inspired to read this book after visiting the Anne Frank House because this novel has a shout out in a film at the end of the tour. I liked reading about the museum through Hazel's eyes.

Gus and Hazel's love and relationship really blossoms during their trip. I'm glad they got this time together since it seems Gus isn't doing well. So sad how Hazel thought she was the super sick one, but it's actually Gus (hide spoiler)]
