This novel is set in Hollywood, Cali – did you get a sense of the setting?

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Yes. Lots of recognizable locations from movies.

Absolutely! Harry's cynicism was due in part to the realities of the setting.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments Yes. I envied his view on a sunny day. I did not know about the 1500+ miles of tunnels under L.A. and now I wonder how many of our big cities have the same thing.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments There was an interesting article on BBC News the other day about the defunct tube station platforms and tunnels that were used as shelters during WWII and then for temporary accommodations for post war refugees. Fascinating.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I lived in England (doing postgraduate degree) 1997-2002, so I knew about those tube stations. Also, a recent James Bond segment had M (Judi Dench) meeting 007 in one of them, I think.

I can't remember the title of a book I read a year or so ago, about people who lived in defunct underground places of NYC. I know the salt mines exist under Cleveland, but don't know whether those are extensive.

It does make me question how "solid" the ground we walk on actually is :). A question we could ask over every manhole cover in the cities, I suppose.

And every time one of those sink holes opens up under a freeway :0(
