Elayna Treadaway "I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years." How true this quote is! When I first began reading the book, naturally I didn't understand what alley he was referring to or what the significance was. I had figured out, though, that it could not have been something that was a memory he wished to cherish by the sentences before the quoted text above. What surprised me, however, was the magnitude of what happened in that alley to Hassan and how Amir sat there and watched.
After reading the story, I got a better appreciation for the authors way of writing. The foreshadowing in the first few sentences of the book really drew me and, I would like to believe, other readers in. The way he hints what will happen later on in the story and leaves little clues to have the reader wanting more is what makes this book enjoyable to read, along with the many plot twists and interesting characters.
The author hinted little subtle details in the story so when a plot twist was revealed the reader would be able to go back and reread parts of the story and think to his or herself "How did I miss that?" For example the author leaves very small clues about what Hassan was to Baba without ever giving it away to the reader until "the big reveal." "Baba never missed Hassan's birthday." "I wish Hassan had been with us here today," said Baba on page 141. By the time it had been revealed later on in the book Baba Jan and Hassan's relationship it felt as if there had been so many cases of foreshadowing left by the author for the readers to find, but all being too subtle, it was nearly impossible to put the pieces together.
