"He cried often for his love of one girl or another. Cried in the bathroom, where nobody could hear him." This quote in the passage shows that Oscar Wao is a very caring person. Although he is caring, he is scared to show these girls that he cares about them which is why he is crying in the bathroom. He is sheltering himself away from everybody.

He realized his fucked-up comic-book-reading, role-playing-game-loving, no-sports-playing friends were embarrassed by him." This direct quote from The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao shows how the main character, Oscar, has been in denial with his only friends. He thought they were all seen as equals or at least he wasn’t the worst of the three. Oscar is sadly mistaken when he realized not only are his friends embarrassed of him, but they would rather hang out with “sluts who couldn’t hold an intelligent conversation for the life of them.” Hopefully with Oscars reevaluation about his friend’s true nature, he will gain enough confidence to change his fat lifestyle and his taste in friends.

Isis | 4 comments "They can’t do what they want to do or be who they should be. I might have no one in the world, but at least I’m free."(pp. 133-134) This is quoted from a gangster in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao who has no family. I think a way for him to cope with being without family is to see it as an opportunity rather than a burden. The idea of being free was appealing to one of our main characters, Beli, who has felt she has to fight to stay in control of her life. Being told to follow in her dead parents footstep and go to college is the exact opposite of her new found life with her gangster boyfriend. I think finding your own path in life is important but an experienced guiding hand is always a helpful asset to have.

Isis | 4 comments “I hate you, I said very quietly, but she didn’t hear. Go get me some water, she said. Put an ice cube in it. That was the last thing I did for her.” Beli had an estrange relationship with her daughter. This could be a reflection of the relationship she had with her own adoptive mother. Beli and her mother never agreed on anything such as if she should go to college and who she should date. After knowing the effect of having a bad relationship with your mother as a girl, I’d think Beli would have tried extra hard to make sure that never happened with her own daughter. Instead she pushed her away with her way of running the house.

Isis | 4 comments "If they noticed the similarities between Past and Present they did not speak of it." This quote is comparing the similarities to when Beli was beaten by the secret police and When Oscar was beaten by an off duty cop. Both incident were caused by being in love with the wrong person and not following the warnings of others. Oscar is just like his mother, desperate for love. But in his case love interest aren't lining up at his door to be with him. This could be one of the reasons Beli showed favoritism to Oscar due to them having to same conquest. Love
