Yoly (macaruchi) | 795 comments Hi everyone! :)

It's time to select our reads for January/February 2016.

We always do a poll with a particular theme in mind, and we can do that if, but we thought this time we'd do it a bit differently and ask if you guys had anything in mind that you would want us to read, we could gather a few ideas and prepare a poll with those options.

So, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas of what we should read next?

Belinda (belindacrawford) | 5 comments How about Peacekeeper by Laura Reeves?
Peacekeeper (Major Ariane Kedros, #1) by Laura E. Reeve

I read the preview ages ago, and it was awesome.

Gary | 1472 comments I still haven't read any of the Harry Potter books. Now, now, wait a second. I did *try* on a couple of occasions, but I just couldn't... However, I also didn't have a reason to actually read them, so I'm going to suggest them as a possibility here because they are, after all, pretty important books for the 20th century, the author is a Girlz, and at some point I probably should get them in my brainspace.

Carolyn F. How about Breakout (Dred Chronicles, #3) by Ann Aguirre - just because it's in my TBR pile

I'd be happy to read the first book in the series, Perdition.
Perdition (Dred Chronicles, #1) by Ann Aguirre

Carolyn F. It's really good Belinda - dark not much romance - kind of like the first Grimspace book by the same author.

If you tell me there's lots of action and gore too, I'll go abuse my credit card some more.

Carolyn F. Yes, pretty much from the start Belinda ;)

I would happily re-read Harry Potter. I actually got the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Illustrated edition for Christmas...because, yes, I am a big child

I really should have read them by now if for no other reason than to keep up with the pop phenomenon, because I will do that just to get a sense of what is happening... but I still haven't. Sometimes I get contrary in unpredictable ways.

Yoly (macaruchi) | 795 comments Thanks for all the suggestions. I added them to the group's bookshelf and to my to-read list :)

Since we usually do a theme for our reads, which theme do you guys think it will be appropriate for our next selection in February?

Whoohoho! Perdition arrived! I'm looking forward to getting stuck in.

Gary | 1472 comments Most of these aren't out yet, so this article might be more long term than February, but several are tantalizing. In particular, The Cold Between by Elizabeth Bonesteel seems appropriate for this group, and at the very least she's got to get points for that last name. Ada Palmer's Too Like The Lightning also seems very apt, as does Company Town by Madeline Ashby. There's several others that would fit. We might look through the author's ouvre to find something already in print (or "in kindle" as it were) to read in the meantime. That would also serve to get up to speed should we pick up one of the books on this list when it comes out.

Yoly (macaruchi) | 795 comments That is a very nice list.

I'm looking forward to All the Birds in the Sky. I've only read Charlie Jane Anders posts on io9, but I like her style.

I'll pick out the books that are relevant to our group from the list and add them to our bookshelf.

Do we want to read Harry Potter as a group? I would be up for that.

Maybe we could have a witch theme or something like that and put HP on the poll....

message 18: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Francis YESSSSS HP

In that case we will only get to read the first one :(

I have a proposal, how about we add the entire Harry Potter series as some kind of "side pick" not related to our monthly poll selections. We could automatically add one Harry Potter book each month, no polls, just do the whole series, one book per month.

What do you guys think?

I like that idea :)

message 21: by Gary (new)

Gary | 1472 comments I supposed the options are to read it as part of the group, or we could make Harry Potter a buddy read. Given the significance of the author/series it surely merits its own thread and discussion, though.

message 22: by Yoly (new)

Yoly (macaruchi) | 795 comments The poll for February's selection is up and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is one of the options. Let's see what happens and we'll take it from there.

message 23: by Gary (new)

Gary | 1472 comments I'm curious what folks would think of reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

The book has, of course, a male author (unless I'm getting "Seth" wrong) but it's based on/a send-up of Austen, and that ties into a bunch of stuff we've discussed in this group.

Plus, I've been meaning to get around to it for some time....

I would be interested in reading that, unfortunately I still haven't read Pride and Prejudice, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't enjoy the zombie version without reading that one first.

Recently audible.com released a new audio version of Pride and Prejudice, narrated by Rosamund Pike and her performance is amazing, so I will probably be listening to that version. I got it for $1.99 since I already "owned" the Kindle version, which I had gotten for free at Amazon. I don't know when I'll listen to it though, I still have Kindred on hold at 50%... I've been lazy :)

Do you have a time frame on when you would want to read it?

Gary | 1472 comments Yoly wrote: "Do you have a time frame on when you would want to read it?"

The movie comes out on Friday, so it's probably a little too late to get it done as a group before then. It should probably not be too long, though, while the "iron is hot" as it were.

A movie!!! That sounds like fun. Well, I'm positive I won't be able to make that date then.

Yeah, sorry I hadn't the foresight to jump on this one earlier. I'd heard that they greenlit a movie, but didn't know anything about the production, blah, blah, blah. Would have been a good one to set up.

Still, we could read the book if folks think it fits.

Gary | 1472 comments February is Black History Month. Wish I'd thought of that too....

That's true. I should get one of those things that have the dates one them. "Kalindares" I think they're called....
