i am looking for a particular book

i'd like to know if anyone outthere can help me find the name of a book i read 10yrs ago, all i can remember is parts of the storyline, it s about a young black man whose landlady dies and he is faced with the possibility if being accused just for being black, although he had nothing to do with it.
so, if u know, pleaaaaase help me remember, i m soooooooo old and forgetful...:-(
