That is quite a list - interesting too. I will have to look some of these up.
I'll use this category for the books I find browsing at the library or in a book store that I want to read through the year that I didn't plan to read at the beginning of the challenge.
Musical theme either about a musician or about a musical or related theme. Could also be a biography.
Art themeEither about an artist, a painting or creation of either.
Art could include sculpture (DaVinci) or painting or even quilting or handwork - anything that is considered art.
Spiritual book or religion other than your own? Some of Depak Chapra's books come to mind and well as those on Mindful Meditation and, and - have a whole list of them for anyone who is interested.
HumourExtreme Vinyl Cafe by Stuart McLean. I've read most of his books and enjoy his radio program, The Vinyl Cafe, and I've also seen him live. Home From The Vinyl Cafe: A Year Of Stories is one of my favourites.
I'm going to be doing two other challenges, so the wild cards will be filled with categories of those
I have so far filled two of my wild cards with Dare Me by Megan Abbott and This Night So Dark by Amie Kaufman. I have The 5th lined up as my next wild card and the other two are still vacant because I'll probably fill it with books from the Contemporary YA group read.
Miss Julia Lays Down the Law by Ann B. RossThis is a guilty pleasure read. It's not earth-shattering or exceptional literature - just another humorous situation Miss Julia, an elderly Southern lady gets herself into.
The People Pill: The Cure for Every Manager's Number One Problem - This is a book about leadership and engaging your team. It was recommended by a co-worker.
I finished all my wild cards! They are as follows:Dawn
Adulthood Rites
Imago
Binti
The Just City
The Kitchen House
The Fireman
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
The Husband's Secret
I gave it just under 4 stars. I loved the concept of the disease and Hill made it sound plausible and believable. I also always love apocalyptic/survival fiction, so that is a plus. He also had a ton of fun 80's references and homages to many author's works, like King and Rowling. However, I felt it was way too long. It could have been about 100-150 pages shorter with a good editor. I kept thinking I was getting to the climax of the story, but it just kept on going. Also, there were quite a few bad guys, but their characters could have been defined better.
Overall, not Joe Hill's best work, but I did end up staying up really late to read it. I would recommend reading this book!
I just read Diners, Dives & Dead Ends. It was a quick, easy read - chosen because the main character has the same last name as I do. It was a cute, cozy mystery with likeable characters. Some of the scenarios and situations that Rose gets into are completely unbelievable, but overall, enjoyed it.
My final book to complete the 52 book challenge!!! - All the Ugly and Wonderful Things. This was one of those books that deals with a disturbing story line and would generate a lot of great discussion for a book club.
