Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Hey everyone. We're doing a catch up challenge for our group reads past and present.

It's pretty simple. Decide how many of the Flights of Fantasy books from our shelf you want to read in 2016, and set your number goal.

Also, we're optionally including the books that are on our sister group's shelf, After Earth. You can have a separate goal for this list of books, or make a combined list. Up to you.

For these books, you can include books we've read in the two years we've now been here. (After Earth started early this year). You can also include upcoming/current books in your count, so leave a little room for those that might win the polls throughout the year.

You can post your goals and progress in this thread, or if you are one of those list junkies, feel free to start your own personal thread in this folder. I'll probably just add to my folder that I made for 2015.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Looking back at 2015, I finished 10 books for FoF and 7 for AE (I'm still working on #8). So to set my goal for 2016, I'll start there and try to increase it a bit.

I'm shooting for 15 FoF and 10 AE, or a total of 25.

Nyssa | 2023 comments This is exactly my goal for 2016, which I set up in "my" (as in I co-mod) challenge group, here.

So, I guess there will be a lot of copy and pasting in my future (if I want to try to maintain 2 copies of the same challenge, or, maybe I can come up with a simpler way to update the challenge here.... I'll have to think on this.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Nyssa, I actually smiled last night when you mentioned catching up in these groups, as we'd already been talking about setting this up.

You can certainly keep your list over there. Whatever is easiest. You could always update with a status over here and link back to it.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Excellent!
Thank you.

Then I think I'll rework the thread I already have here, and use it to update my progress, while keeping the master list over on the other thread, linking to it instead, as you suggested.
Yay! Thank You, again!

Nyssa | 2023 comments I think I'm all set . Looking back, I had a craptastic 2015 when it came to the group reads! Ouch!
I feel like I owe you guys an apology.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Don't beat yourself up about it, Nyssa. Even the moderators fall behind in the group reads. That's a big reason we cut back to two books a month from four. There was just too much to keep up with.

It's a no pressure group. If nothing else, the books picked are there to give you an idea of things you might like to try, now or later on. I've become aware of a lot of books and authors this way, even if I didn't read them during an "assigned" month.

tl;dr version: No guilt, no problem

Nyssa | 2023 comments Thanks! I know there's no pressure from anyone here; it's just me. :)

This is an awesome group with great people, and I'm very happy to be a part of it.

And some of the mods are honey badgers...

Elise Kleuskens I never noticed how much books I read and how much I missed last night. Apparently out of last years 36 books I have read 23! Not bad at all!
So I should be able to read almost all books of the coming year! (That is, if I can get them here in the Netherlands!)

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Elise, you're a FoF Rock Star! Seriously, that's pretty awesome.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 103 comments I had good intentions last year, but it's been craptastic for me too.
All over!

Thank Chris! And here I was thinking I was so far behind!

Jay (okay_jay) | 135 comments Sweet challenge, I like the opportunity to meld. I've already read a fair few of these, but I'll try for ten this year.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Little did I know then that my 2016 would be worse than my 2015!
Knowing what I now know, my goals and expectations for 2017 are very low, as I'll be neck deep in work and school.

But I'm here to ask a different question, and wasn;t sure where to put it.

After Earth?

Has our sister group gone to the big book club farm in the sky?

The last post was made sometime in September and there has been no response or activity since.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Hey, life happens. We usually don't have much say as to when it completely demands our attention.

So, an idea just popped into my head. My favorite thing about AE is that the selections are randomized.

What if we take the non-winning FoF choices from the month before and randomize those for the current month? That way the selections get a 2nd chance (for those of us in both groups) but we're not competing with the same genres in both clubs. It also eases the stress of depending on two sets of nominations.

We can also keep the Book Nomination thread for those who do want to nominate but have the 2nd chance option for those months with low member participation.

For instance, to pick our August 2016 read(s):

Option 1: We take the non-winning choices from both of the July polls and randomize them.

Option 2: We would pick one of the July polls, randomize the non-winning choices, and then we would open a "Random Book Nomination" thread for our 2nd book.

If there is a month with only one poll, like this December, then we automatically choose Option 2.

What do you think?

Maybe have a poll for all the runners up?
