Tom Potter I've been excited to read Daniel Silva, just read The Fallen Angel (my first Silva), and am a little disappointed. Here's why, and this could contain some very minor spoilers about plot setup (but no specifics about characters or anything). We know who the killer is after just a few chapters. The rest of the book is about some covert ops that are only very loosely related to the original murder and, IMO, do nothing to help solve it. This latter portion of the book just seems to be about action and intrigue for the sake of action and intrigue.

I love a good international espionage thriller and I love a good murder mystery. But I want some misdirections, some twists, some unexpected revelations about characters--some creative surprises that are clever and work with the plot. And I like that plot to be tight and relevant. For example, I think Michael Connelly does a good job with all of this. Also Dennis Lehane and, in his way, Richard Price. Getting some of that with spies and geopolitics thrown in would be great.

So... can someone tell me if other Silva books are "better" than Fallen Angel by these standards, and recommend a few I might try?

Thank you in advance, apologies if I've offended anyone's taste or opinion in this post, and thank you for welcoming me to this awesome group!

Chris Baez (chrisbaez) | 239 comments Daniel is good writer, I have read prob, everything he's written.

The first Daniel Silva book that was given to me was A Death In Vienna. After I read it, I went back to the first book in the Gabriel Allon series and started the whole series from the beginning. When I caught up to A death In Vienna I just read it again.

Maybe you need to get a hold of the first book in the series, and then things will fall, or start falling in place; hopefully.

No apologies needed Tom, we are here to help each other. I have to say, here in Goodreads you are going to get the straight scoop. No sugar coating here.

Hope this helps.

Tom Potter Thank you very much--it is encouraging that you have liked Silva enough to read all of him! I did pick up the first Allon book (The Kill Artist) when I got the others, so I will give that a try. I appreciate the feedback.

Chris Baez (chrisbaez) | 239 comments Yes, I always like to read series in order, it kind of puts each book in perspective; POV sort of speak.

The same thing happened to me with John Lescroart's Dismas and Glitzki series, though each book can stand alone, always something is mentioned from the earlier books.

Good luck, keep us posted.
