About the Nature of the Dreams

Dreams are important in Connie’s life. For one thing it is whilst she is dreaming that Connie is closest to being human. In her dreams she experiences pain, fear, anxiety and a range of other human emotions that she is unable to feel as keenly whilst awake. Her dreams are also a window into her own past as she discovers she is dreaming of events in her childhood that she barely remembers, but now can view as an objective observer.

Over the course of her tale Connie’s dreams take her on a journey. When we first meet Connie we discover that she has been dreaming almost her entire life of being chained and tortured – experiencing the pain and horror almost every night, before waking and having human emotions once again leave her. It is a change in her dreams that begins the call she can feel drawing her back to Bristol. In the dreams she is finally saved from the torture only to discover that instead she must now watch her younger self being attacked and “cursed” for the first time.
